Another end of year to reflect and appreciate the life we have while continuing to build relationships, learn new things, and challenge ourselves in new ways.
As we approached this card and this song, we couldn't help but think of all the many people in our lives, past and present, who have played such a part along the way. Laying in a blanket of old Christmas cards, we got a chance to look at the pictures of families that started as young couples, the babies who have grown and changed, the seasons of life that have evolved since auld lang syne.
Here were some of the highlights of our past year:
Lenna enjoys making art out of trash, singing in choir, dancing, and writing stories.
Eli loves soccer, beatboxing, reading, jump roping, the ninja gym, and building LEGO.
Went on a family trip to Costa Rica where we chased waterfalls, saw sloths, zip lined through the trees, and made chocolate.
Scott and Samantha celebrated 15 years of marriage with a trip to Portugal.
This year's song is Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Performed by Scott Gratton, with additional vocals by Samantha and Lenna and beatboxing by Eli.

“We moved” is a phrase that sums up a lot of the year. It was the biggest thing that happened and impacted a lot of daily life, despite being a mere 20 minutes away. We are settling in to new rooms, new routines, new school, and a new community. All while maintaining the same jobs, same responsibilities, same interests, and same values. So while so much feels like it changed, so much also stayed the same. We’re grateful for the new and the old and everything in between.

Here's the quick list of highlights in the family this year!
We spent an amazing month of adventure while working remote in Utah, hiking and exploring so many national and state parks
Eli is in first grade, excels at math, passed the swimming test to ride the slides, and is a very creative LEGO builder
Lenna is in her last year of preschool, learned to ride a bike without training wheels and eagerly sounds out letters as she starts to read
Scott enjoys the new local skatepark, coaching the soccer team, and playing music
Samantha is always planning the next trip, keeps up with freelance writing projects, and is somehow in two book clubs
Eli loves hanging out with his friends, playing chess, beatboxing, and collecting Pokemon cards
Lenna loves making art, dancing, and singing nonstop

Oh what fun it is to...
make new friends in kindergarten (Eli)
move and twirl at dance on Fridays (Lenna)
play basketball and soccer on a team (Eli)
paint as often as possible (Lenna)
coach soccer with an (almost!) undefeated team (Scott)
bake something yummy (Lenna and Samantha)
plan and travel to new places again (Samantha)
return to things in person (all)

Here we are, closing in on another year. Another year of time together as a family, another year spent learning and growing and changing. We’re grateful to have another year, even if it hasn’t all been perfect. Here’s some of our highlights from 2021:
After being cooped up at home so much, we spent over a month on the road this summer, traveling through 8 states and visiting friends and relatives we hadn’t seen in far too long
The three of us who could, got vaccinated and cashed in on some free donuts to celebrate
We enjoyed some family activities like stand-up paddleboarding, tennis, bike rides, skateboarding/scootering, baseball, and neighborhood walks
Scott continues to work at the same place (albeit from home) and is still writing, recording, and playing music
Samantha started writing articles for PBS Kids and resumed some of the freelance writing she’d set aside in the chaos of 2020
Eli is in his final year of preschool, is great at math, learning to read, took swimming lessons, learned to ride a bike, likes board games and LEGOs, played soccer and was often the top scorer on his team
Lenna joined the Bunny class at preschool, likes drawing, painting and puzzles, always wants to make cookies, loves dance class, learned to ride a scooter, and is a big fan of music and Daniel Tiger
