I have watched Bridgerton casually for many years but this season has hit me at an interesting intersection of vulnerability—there is pining, and dreaming, but they are weighted and old, dragged into sunlight that’s less edifying than it’s clarifying. And benedict and sophie’s dynamic feels weighted and old. this interesting push-pull between fantasy and reality is not something i expected from bridgerton’s take on the cinderella story and it’s gotten me to write an original post on tumblr for the first time in years.

benedict’s always been my favourite. i see in him the frantic, always-ongoing construction of an incredibly fragile reality, cocooned in unimaginable privilege while also styling himself as a rebel and having fantasies of freedom. there’s an image in my head of someone running at full tilt at a treadmill that’s also powering the spinning of gossamer-thin candy: an illusion of constant movement and creation. he sweats as he pounds away. the sunlight through the gossamer splits into a brilliant prism. but the minute he missteps, it all breaks.

benedict has never bought into the ‘marriage mart’ and he is always ready to help his siblings break the ‘rules’. he is unafraid to explore his sexuality and his interests are wide ranging and esoteric. but he avoids conflict like the plague: anthony can usually shut him up with a glare, get him to do his bidding with a word. benedict gives up a career in art at the first hint of doubt. his sexual encounters are cloaked in secrecy and drowned in alcohol. he’s a free spirit but here he is for the last year filling in for his brother’s viscount duties. truth is, benedict’s always looking for a compromise. truth is, benedict’s enmeshed with his family so deeply that he regurgitates resentment and it looks like acceptance.

given all this, benedict’s decision in the mid-season cliffhanger makes perfect sense.

to be fair, the show was beating us over the head with benedict seeing examples of other men around him keeping lovers as mistresses and it being framed as a way to love while still remaining in society. in fact I remember from s1 benedict questioning granville’s (?) lavender marriage and granville reminding him it’s the only way he can still love the way he wants to. his love for sophie in many ways is equally as radical as a queer relationship, and he reaches out for it the only way he’s learned for many years.

Titans Season 2 Overall Thoughts:

the season opener was really just the season 1 finale and i’ve said enough about that already

love that Dick is no longer a cop and it’s never even brought up they’re like yeah he’s over that don’t worry about it

wish there was more of Conner in the season to see him establish dynamics with more characters. we only see him with Gar and that’s only after knowing him for a short time. i would’ve liked to see him even be introduced to the others before he’s suddenly “part of the family”

i’m not saying i necessarily was attached to the big ass location titles for every scene but very notably they just stopped doing them halfway through the season. why establish a style of showcasing location for 1.5 seasons to just decide not to do it? it felt like a strange new world without seeing SAN FRANCISCO superimposed onto the screen as we cut back to the Tower for every scene there. and honestly for a season that had everyone going off on their own, i feel like they actually could’ve been utilized more to say where people were. just a strange deviation from what they already established as their norm

i understand having to play catch up and explain/retcon stuff from s1 bc that was badly done or never explained but in doing so, it needs to be crystal clear. you can’t throw around numbers/ages/dates and expect it to suddenly make sense when it now seems to be contradictory to what we were told/shown. i would genuinely rather them do a exposition dump saying “remember when we were [age] years old and started the team and then [characters] joined at [point in time]. and all that was ___ years ago.” like when they formed the team, when Hank and Dawn joined, when Dick and Dawn got together, when the team disbanded, when Dick and Dawn broke up, and when Hank and Dawn got together is just too many questions for me to consider. even with the flashback to the team breaking up answering some of those questions, it’s been too long of me wondering and the answers are completely unsatisfying. also still unclear who exactly started the team and when. in the finale Dick basically said he and Donna did, but then why wouldn’t Garth have also been a founding member since we know he and Donna were friends when they were 12? see, i shouldn’t still have questions about it!

similarly, i get this season was trying to redo foundational elements of season 1 but they needed to accept that what was done was already done and move on, or retcon whatever they wanted to change and move on. either way, move on. you can’t spend the entire second season trying to start from scratch with “here’s the group of people that suddenly don’t actually want to be here and they haven’t learned how to work as a team” because now the show is half over and there is no character progress from when it first began. in fact, they even regressed from the progress of last season

^ all of s1 was Rachel’s demonic stuff acting up and her not knowing about it/how to control it and trying to fight it/figure it out. then she beat Trigon and it seemed that was all wrapped up. then this season it’s Rachel’s demonic stuff is acting up again and she doesn’t know what it is or how to control it. literally the same exact plot except no one seems to be paying much mind to it?? Gar and Jason saw it happen, Rachel told Kory about it, Donna saw it happen (and knows she killed a guy), and still it’s not brought up much. only hinted at the end of the finale when Kory and Dawn suddenly seem to question that hmm Rachel’s powers might not be as they appear. gee what clued you guys in? was it Rachel stating as much many numerous times? honestly not sure why this is even a plot happening when Rachel’s arc felt concluded. but it’s carrying into the third season now it seems

throughout the season we saw the whole team come together for the first time to beat Trigon, then same ep go their separate ways, later come back together when Dr. Light poses a threat, Rose joins as a new member, Conner is introduced halfway through (!), then everyone leaves again when Dick tells the truth about Jericho, they further split up within their pairings with Rachel leaving Donna and Dawn leaving Hank, come back together again (at least half of them) in the diner, then split up again, then finally regroup together during the finale. we are now halfway through the entire show and the team has ONLY JUST NOW AT THE END OF THE S2 FINALE fully formed and become an actual team

^ they made a huge deal in s1 out of rushing over character dynamics and relationship growth to say this is a team and a family and they all are super close and love each other. then all of s2 Kory’s off doing her own thing, Rachel and Gar seem miserable at the Tower and fight with each other, Jason is Jason, and Dick is the worst mentor/adult of all time, keeping things from both the kids and his original team. and then they all split up and are on their own. sooo where is that connection that i was force-fed last season?? suddenly they all act like strangers which is even more weird with the ogs. i get trust being lost over time but they fought together fine when beating Trigon and then the actual season’s arc kicked in and they’re all pissy. everyone seems ooc from what they’ve already established. forget seeing any further character development, they’re being completely stripped of the little that they already got. everyone pissed me off with their reactions and completely not communicating. the coming back together at the end was a relief but it shouldn’t have needed to happen so dramatically because they shouldn’t have been fighting or apart the entire season to begin with! and forget any actual conversations happening to address their problems, no they’ll just skip over that to be suddenly hunky dory again and cement themselves as a happy family

overall the whole season has a major pacing problem. they spend time unnecessarily dragging things out to make very basic points (entire ep of Dick hallucinating Bruce just to show Dick’s hiding something and feels guilty about it, which we already knew) or just to get to the next plot point. so much happens at once to the point we jump from characters in plot A to characters in plot B to characters in plot C (and so on and so forth) consistently in eps. which would be fine if they were relevant plots or leading to all of them intertwining but they’re not. instead it’s things like Gar and Conner hanging out at the Tower, Kory dealing with Tamaranean stuff that’s completely isolated to her (which still nobody knows is happening??), Hank and Dawn dealing with domestic woes and breaking up, Dick in prison, and Rachel killing people. all while Slade just still exists as the big bad of the season in the background, yet for most of the time they actually don’t seem to care to go after him for all their mourning Garth and anger at Dick for Jericho’s death. if they cut out all the unneeded nonsense that solely kills time they could actually spend that time on fully fleshing out different plot points rather than throwing it all together for the sake of having it. simultaneous issue of too much stuff happening quickly with meaningless stuff happening too slowly and taking up episodes for no reasons

they also spend way too much time this season over showing very simple facts that could be easily explained. as much as i enjoyed getting to see Garth, the whole ep dedicated to a flashback solely to show that he was killed by Slade was a waste of time, considering as soon as he was included in the flashback i knew by the end of it Slade would have killed him. and it’s not like it hit me particularly harder by the end of the ep cause i knew going into it he wasn’t sticking around, and even after the whole ep of seeing him with the team and forming a romance with Donna, there wasn’t much emotional impact. i was more disappointed we wouldn’t be getting to see more of an actually interesting character who seemed to have surprising depth to him (just a lil Atlantean pun there) in the show. Garth’s character was the strongest part of his ep, he felt fully developed in a way some of the others don’t, but then he was gone as expected. it really was an ep just to show Garth and Donna’s short-lived romance, which parts of i liked, but overall felt very out of place and out of character, and watered down their dynamic to a very cheesy romantic drama. again, i didn’t need the flashback at all bc even one of the team going “Five years ago, Slade killed Aqualad” would have had the same impact. i like Garth so i allowed it but that’s only one example of cases where they spend entire eps getting to the point of something that i already know, and not just bc i theorized or assumed would happen but bc of very clear context clues and showing/explicitly stating hints of it before. if you’re going to build up foreshadowing, then when you get to the actual reveal of something, just reveal it! i don’t need another 45 mins very slowly showing what i’ve already been led to know

Dick’s prison stint. what a fucking waste. didn’t make sense as it happened, still doesn’t make sense after the fact. sure he wanted to punish himself for the guilt of getting Jericho killed and lying to the team about how it happened but getting himself imprisoned for seven years?? that means nothing as a longterm consequence bc obviously we know from the jump he’ll be getting out shortly. so what did his time in prison do? showed that despite his “i’m not helping anyone anymore” mindset he still always will, introduce the concept of a bird myth that saves people, and offers him the opportunity to get severely ill so he can realize via talking/fighting with his Bruce hallucination that Jericho is still alive. all of which could’ve EASILY been done without the prison plot. and i’ll even tell you how. 1) he tries to step away from mentoring after he reveals he lied about Jericho and feels he’s ultimately failing the kids and can’t be the leader they deserve, yet he can’t help but step in when seeing they really do need assistance and guidance. that shows that try as he might to deny it, helping people is in his nature. 2) have him reflect on who he wants his new identity to be. not Robin but a mightier bird figure, which makes him think of the Kryptonian legend Superman has told him about that he’s now going to adopt as his persona. 3) in telling anyone else (a real person not a hallucination) about his talk with Slade, he realizes how Jericho’s mom said “they” but only Slade was in the room, then show the flashback to Slade doing sign language. Dick can then realize with a start that Jericho must be alive somehow. all of that accomplished without the meaningless prison plot

clearly they don’t know what to do with ANY character this season though. Kory is completely wasted and separated from the team more than she’s with them contributing. all the Tamaranean stuff is introduced but never has any actual consequences on her or the team. she never even tells the team about her sister or what’s going on. Blackfire is now going to be on Earth after it being teased all season and yet does anyone even know anything about Tamaran genuinely? Kory and Donna had the barest of convos about Kory being a princess but that was it. i’d like to think she was kept separate bc otherwise she’d be putting a stop to the rest of the team’s bullshit real quick, but whatever the reason it felt like her character was wasted by not being around the others

miscommunication being the entire trope of the season is one thing (and i do hate it) but miscommunication in the storytelling itself is another thing. the characters can be concealing stuff or not fully expressing what’s going on but as the audience, i should be able to tell what the plot is. and frankly, i didn’t.

^ one key example being Rachel’s whole deal, especially in the Elko episode. having all those strange occurrences seem like Rachel’s demonic doing but not being clear about it, only to then have it be Bruce who gathered them all together (which made no sense, given it was Rachel speaking to Donna and Dawn through their phone/radio), only to THEN reveal it at the end of the season that it actually maybe was Rachel?? but Rachel might not have been aware of doing it?? it’s not a mystery to unravel if it’s just a series of events that aren’t explained, addressed, or make any sense to both viewers and characters

introducing Rose in ep 2 to only explain her entire character in ep 12 (penultimate of the season) is such a waste. especially when the entire time we are getting Jericho lore and flashbacks and i’m wondering where Rose is in all of this. not even in a way of them building up mystery or tension, but genuinely not seeing how she fits into the story. then we see how her and Slade come to meet but only AFTER 1) she quits the team and 2) it’s revealed she was working for Slade the whole time but she’s now done. which also had zero consequences on the story at all bc she never really betrayed them or did anything. by only showing the audience her true connection to Slade after the fact of her involvement with anyone, there is no room for dramatic irony or the barest amount of suspense. we only see how she could have been a threat to the team after it’s clear she no longer is. instead of a “i wonder how she will betray them” it’s more of a “oh good thing she never betrayed them i guess.” honestly it renders her entire character and presence in the show moot. if they had the flashback to her meeting/training/working with Slade before all the Jericho flashbacks instead, at least that could be a rising tension to make us wonder how her part in everything would play out. instead we only see what potential she might have had to sabotage the team after she never even did, so why would i care about it at all?

the starting incident of the entire show was Dick realizing that he can no longer be Robin in the way he used to. his entire character arc (still left unfinished bc he really doesn’t make much progress with it) has been about his identity crisis as a vigilante. the main part of his story is essentially him going “i don’t know who i am but i know who i’m not. i won’t be any part Bruce’s or Batman’s anymore. i’m my own person making my own decisions.” and all of that gets completely thrown away bc Dick just goes and accepts a suit of a new identity that Bruce completely designed. hello??? why the hell am i watching you have an identity crisis for 24 episodes if you apparently don’t even care about it as much as i do?! and he never even said the name Nightwing or explained anything to anybody about who he is now. that seems kinda important to do considering it’s been THE question surrounding him for, let me reiterate, the entire show. and if a key part of his prison arc was for him to be introduced to the mythic symbol of the bird which he would then adopt, he would have to have had actually chosen his suit/symbol/name for himself. but he had literally no contribution to it. the suit was Bruce’s design, the symbol is just a vague blue triangle form, and there is no mention of a name anywhere besides the ep title

Donna’s death was pointless and i’m not just saying that bc it was a character i at least started out liking and enjoy most interactions with being killed off. if a death drives the plot then i can at least understand it even if i don’t like it, but this one genuinely did nothing. how did it impact the team besides them being kinda sad? it didn’t. they had no revelations, no introspection, no immediate actions taken. they mourned with a dinner then got right back to being the Titans as a whole team. which they already had done before she died so it’s not like Donna’s death was the impetus for them to reconvene. Garth’s death at least served a purpose, albeit instantly predictable and way too drawn out, in that it was what led the team to the Jericho plan which inevitably led to them splitting apart. Donna’s death isn’t the reason the team is doing anything bc they already were regrouping prior to it. it affected nothing plot wise or honestly emotions wise bc the whole team has already dealt with loss and trauma. really only the ogs knew Donna enough to be affected so heavily (as Gar himself said he didn’t really know her) but they already have the loss of Garth to serve that purpose of a fallen team member. and the kids have their own sources of trauma that have bigger impacts anyway. Gar was just brainwashed and attacked an entire carnival of innocent people, Conner was just brainwashed and attacked the Titans, Rachel’s goop is doing whatever (still don’t know), Rose has Slade for a father who she just killed (i still think he’s gonna return) so that’s plenty of trauma, and Jason has his backstory (even though he’s not even with the team for the aftermath anyway). so literally no reason for Donna’s death. but Rachel is now off to Themyscira and posited the concept of reviving Donna so maybe that does happen. i don’t have any hopes or expectations for it bc even if she does come back killing her off to begin with remains dumb. solely a “Gotcha!” moment during the finale bc clearly they felt that otherwise having an episode that wraps things up nicely wouldn’t be good enough

Hank and Dawn breakup annoyed me and not only bc i think their dynamic is one of the strongest elements of the show. we’ve seen them come back from relationship speed bumps before but you’re telling me finding out Dick slightly lied about the specifics of Jericho’s death five years ago is what finally drove them over the edge? made Hank break up with Dawn and relapse? and made Dawn then not see any worth to them trying again? also one of their biggest struggles is that they can’t suit up as Hawk and Dove without Hank turning to drugs, which caused conflict when Dawn started going out as Dove alone and kept it from him. but now they’re both being Hawk and Dove as part of the Titans anyway so why can’t they just be together?

the entirety of last season Bruce Wayne haunted the narrative both in-universe and to the audience. his name was dropped constantly as Dick worked to get out from under his shadow, yet we never were allowed to see him besides in hidden silhouette shots that were honestly comical. this season it’s suddenly The Bruce Wayne Invasion. might as well retitle the series bc he’s everywhere. as an insanely strange characterization of himself, serving Batman Beyond Bruce Wayne realness more than anything. and doing triple duty by appearing as himself, a Dick hallucination of himself (on multiple occasions), and apparently a shared hallucination that Rachel conjured into the minds of Kory, Donna, and Dawn. but it’s not just his presence that doesn’t make sense, it’s the fact he is so heavily involved. when it’s not Rachel pretending Bruce is pulling the strings of things, Bruce actually is. he makes Dick take Jason to become a Titan, he designs Dick’s new suit and robs him of any decision-making for his new identity which Dick is suddenly more than fine with, and he shuts down Cadmus from afar to solve the climax of action in the finale. complete 180 from last season in all aspects of having Bruce be here, and definitely swung WAY too far in the opposite direction of “we have Bruce available as a character, let’s put him in as many scenes as possible.” it doesn’t make sense to constantly have him involved both from an audience standpoint, bc this isn’t a Batman or Justice League show, or from a character standpoint bc the whole point of Dick having the Titans is to lead his own team away from Batman. yet Bruce seems to be the solution to most of the team’s problems, giving them an easy fix when they need it without having to deal with their issues or work as a team to figure stuff out. which you’d think they all would kinda resent given the fact half the team are grown adults and worked hard to make names for themselves (well not Dick clearly he was just handed his newest vigilante name). but no suddenly Dick is glad to be a nepo baby vigilante and have Bruce take over when things get tough!

i struggle to compare this season as a whole to season 1 and decide which one i enjoyed more. despite s1’s flaws, it was really only the finale that enraged me beyond compare and culminated everything i couldn’t stand into one ep. this season had multiple episodes (in a row) where i was so annoyed i didn’t even want to watch. and the regression of character arcs or dynamics with each other felt like not only am i wasting my time watching this season, but i wasted my time watching last season considering none of that seemed to matter. Bruce mischaracterization from s1 (violent and ruthless as Batman) was at least an off-screen characterization, whereas this Bruce mischaracterization is obnoxiously shown all the time. and at least s1 was consistent in its flaws from start to finish (excluding the clusterfuck of the finale as an outlier) whereas s2 was a rollercoaster of different levels of mediocrity

^ i think the first half of this season worked well to bring the team together while introducing new characters and having one clear plotline of who the bad guy is. we know from the jump they’re dealing with Deathstroke and that carries on throughout (rather than last season of them trying to figure out who is coming after them and the people they’re fighting changing). but, for some reason, then the season takes a turn and it’s constant miscommunication, fighting, and everyone splitting up. first from the large group then from individual pairings as well. so all of that work from the first half gets blown up and they’re back to square one with half the amount of eps left to come back together, which doesn’t even happen until the finale anyway

aaand after writing an entire 4k essay of analysis, that’s all the mental energy i’m dedicating to this season. if season 3 makes even a little more sense structurally, i'll be...happy seems a generous word so i'll just say less pissed off! halfway done now and only way out is through 😄

season 2 finale time! with how awful the s1 finale was i’m going into this with zero expectations, besides the assumption i’ll probs be left frustrated by lack of closure for many plot points. if the team all gets back together in the same place for at least one scene of substance i’ll consider it a win though

actually the ep title is “Nightwing” so i’m already back to being so annoyed Dick’s adopting this identity by just saying “sure why the hell not” to something Bruce completely designed himself without even a discussion. can’t wait to hear Dick try and rationalize why he chose (he didn’t) this bc of his time in prison. if he even offers an explanation. he probably won’t

he hijacked Cadmus’ systems to stop the bidding for Conner and filled their monitors with emojis instead. no. i don’t think he would do that.
