Recommended Reading: The One Straw Revolution by Masanobu Fukuoka, advocating natural farming methods. Originally written in 1975 and translated in 1978. This book has expanded the way that I understand organic farming and natural food. It is a book on philosophy and how one engages with the world at large almost moreso than it is a book on natural food practices.

Free FAR for rooftop greenhouses !
The mayor also signed a bill to exempt rooftop greenhouses from being counted toward buildings’ height and floor area measurements. The greenhouses will join structures like roof tanks, air-conditioning equipment and chimneys as apparatus that are not factored into buildings’ official totals, easing limitations on the construction of such structures.

Despite an early drizzling, this year's Fourth of July (on the Third of July) BBQ was a success! We went all day from noon well into the night. Smoked meats included pulled pork shoulder, all sorts of ribs, sausages, and brisket. Pizzas on the grill, homemade sorbets (especially of note: pineapple rum coconut and cava watermelon mint basil), cornbread, gazpacho, delicious sides and salads, perfectly striped Jell-O, frozen bananas, cupcakes, hearty greens from EAT in Greenpoint ... and all the other things that disappeared before I could even lay eyes on them. Thanks for coming out!

About four weeks in, the plants are doing great on the roof. The tomatoes have started to grow the first fruits, the cilantro has gone crazy, the basil is blooming, and the strawberries are leaping. We also got a composter set up on the roof this week. Already scheming for a harvest party ...

Some first sketches for roof layout. These schemes are combining the planter bins with a base structure that supports a hoop house that would enclose the long table. The hoop house structure could be made of metal or pvc poles and netting in the summer (for mild shading and windbreak) / plastic in the winter (for more climate control).
