I signed up for Tumblr. I'm not really sure why exactly. Truth be told I've had numerous blogs on the Internets. Xanga. LiveJournal. Myspace. LiveJournal. Zorpia. Blogspot. Facebook Notes. LiveJournal. Blogspot. I think Myspace lasted the longest, something like 3-4 years of semi-regular writings. But then this past summer Myspace (yes, they're still operational) decided EYYYYY LET'S REDESIGN AND REBRAND OURSELVES AND DELETE ALL OF OUR USERS' CONTENT WITHOUT INFORMING THEM LOLOLOLLALAJFLSDAJFLERZ!!
Yes, since Myspace has more or less been a digital graveyard since the overtaking of Facebook, probably 95% of past users don't even know that they're messages, blogs, comments, pictures, videos - everything. Gone. Deleted. Without any prior warning whatsoever. Now, is this really a big deal? Eh. Most of the pictures I still have. The blogs, though, had some content on it that I would have liked to save.
It's funny - there was an outcry in 2005 or whenever it was when Myspace Tom sold the company for something like $500 million. Some thought he sold out, others thought he sold it for far less than what it would eventually be worth. But Myspace Tom is a smart guy because at that exact moment Myspace had peaked and it was all downhill. For comparison's sake, Justin Timberpoop purchased Myspace for about $35 million. That's a drop of like a million percent. But Myspace Tom's genius wasn't just in the perfect timing of the sale but the fact that he didn't force users to adapt to any site changes or redesigns. And yes, there were a few major ones but you always had the option to revert back to the classic layout. It's amazing how many big Internet corporations don't understand this.
Yes, Mark Suckerberg, I'm talking to you. And to the morons who just redesigned the Yahoo! Sports page. Are they fucking blind or something? Who can honestly read the content on that page without going cross-eyed?
