My weekend
A Belgian cello bridge I just finished.
The blog
Sorry things have been slow on here. Making has not been as much of a priority these days with repair and set up work, and extra time goes to restorations. If your on Instagram follow me at Gtrace for more day to day posts of my work.
Violin made by Kurt Widenhouse, Belmont, North Carolina. One of the best living makers in the U.S.
Carved the outline of the back
found this old shot of my last violins scroll. Probably my nicest.
This is the neck heel of a cello that was recently reset by me (my boss did the varnish work). A neck reset consists of sawing out the neck and adding wood in 8 places to raise up the neck from the body, center the neck on the body, apply the proper neck tilt (slightly towards the bass side on cello to allow for easy A and D string bowing), and to get the proper neck angle on the body, in this case it needed everything, including a side piece since the neck wasn’t originally center and wouldn’t hit the button proper with the corrected angle. I got the light to an angle where you can see my joint a little better. The tiny piece at the back was originally there, but there's another new back piece at the back of the right side that you can't see.
Would you be interested in making a violin on commission? How much would you charge to make violins?
Yea that is possible. Privately message me about it. I sort of have my next Instrument (recently pictured the back and f holes being cut) spoken for by a shop that the will most likely have It up for sale. The 2015 violin that's pictured as well (varnished) is going to be in a shops collection. Might never be sold, or sold after a while.
A better picture of the back varnish on my last violin.
My workbench.
The back of the previously posted violin top. My 9th instrument.
F holes. Just need to put in the notches and a few finalizing cuts.
Antiqued my last violin.
My latest scroll. The 9th or 10th one. I used a method of carving one side to finish and copying it for the other side.
How long did it take?
About 20-40 hours
Wow. It looks good. I’ve entertained being a luthier in retirment. How did you learn to do it?
Violin making schools have had this trend of more students who are entering retirement.
