Jonathan and his old name
Jonathan's old name was Noah and his family was hyper religious. His father was a priest. So knowing that the infection was starting to get bad when he was 8, and that he remembers seeing stuff about it on TV, there is a chance that his parents named him Noah in reference to the infection. Even if not, its still viscerally symbolic.
In the bible, Noah was a devout believer in god and him, along with his family and 2 of each animal, we're the only survivors of the flood. A mass extinction event purging humanity due to its evils. He only survived because he believed deeply in god and was good. At the end of the flood, god made a rainbow to show that he wouldn't do it again.
In Decayed and Decrepit, Jonathan never truly believed in god, in fact, its said that his father would constantly try to convince him to believe, that the only book he was allowed to read was pretty much the Bible. None of his family survived the infection. He survived by being a coward and hiding away, by joining groups and doing awful things. At the end of that part of his life, 4C and Spidey show him sunsets and most notably, rainbows.
The infection is a mass extinction event of humanity. So is the flood. Imagine knowing the story of Noah, the story of your namesake, the one who survived to the end, and knowing that you are nothing like him. Jonathan planned to die in that church. He wasnt planning to see the other side, to him, there was no other side of this. He was just planning to eventually take his own life. Jonathan did not believe in god, maybe some part of him, like many people with religious trauma, would have moments where they would be afraid, a small instinct of belief, and saw those rainbows. A promise to not kill humanity like this again, while everyone he has ever loved his died.
Of course he wouldn't be Noah. He probably stopped thinking of himself by that name. He is nothing like Noah.
Imagine that, and some young woman shows up and calls you Jonathan. Perhaps its in reference to John Does, maybe its a biblical reference to the Jonathan who famously was close with David, who stepped down from his place as king to hand it to David, 4C's real name.
After all, all of his bullets were meant for him. Meant for his plan. But he kept giving them up for 4C and Spidey.
Jonathan had to know the implications of that. He was a pastors kid. The only book he read was the Bible as a kid and most of the books in the church were religious. He had to know what a name like Noah meant. Imagine all that weight placed upon his shoulders to survive this, to have a purpose. A purpose, finding a cure, he knew was pointless.
Imagine all of that, and then Spidey shows up and lifts it off of his shoulders and places a new title. Jonathan. John Doe. Jonathan the side piece in a Bible story. Changing the purpose he gave himself, the one he knew was in vain, that he gave up on, to one of just living with people again.
