I'm curious to know what are the things that disappoint you in Hannibal S2?
It’s just the season’s overall direction that’s been disappointing me.
Last season had a clear cut arc and the plot ultimately meshed together really well, from the first episode until the last, but this season feels like a huge mess. Almost like two seasons in one. There’s just been so many plotlines squeezed into these episodes (the past few especially) that both the overall narrative and the pacing have suffered for it. The beginning of the season, addressing Will’s incarceration and the consequences of that, felt a lot stronger. Or at least more directional. But that seemed so rushed, along with his revelations and memories about Hannibal, and this second half of the season has completely derailed, imo.
That’s really what bothers me. It just feels so disorganized and thrown together and nothing is that cohesive. I’m thankful for non-case-of-the-week episodes because they feel a little stronger plot wise but every episode at this point feels so tedious and drawn out.
Like I’m tired of the crime scenes and I’m tired of the visual effects/cinematography which was so subtle and beautiful last year but has gone way overboard this year and I’m really tired of the dialogue especially. Thomas Harris’ prose was super poetic and metaphorical like that, but it sounds really forced and awkward when every character on the show talks that way and the lines can get really laughable. I’m also really bored with the obvious “shock value” scenes, like the sex scene and Chilton getting shot and the cliffhanger for Freddie.
I still like the show, and there are elements of this season that I’ve really loved. Overall though I am highly disappointed, for a lot of reasons. I know there are people enjoying it but for me, it just doesn’t even come close to the appeal of season one.
