Greyclan is a horror Clangen that takes place in the Greylock analog horror series, and follows a clan of warriors who live along the cliffs of Mt. Greylock. These cats have strange practices, and an even stranger history, all revolving around a presence deep in the mountain. Something that beckons them closer, to see what lies beneath. Something beyond understanding. Something that thinks.

Mods:
Meep/Leon here, hello!! I'm the one running the Clangen save for Greyclan and the main director and artist of the story! I was a huge Warriors fan as a kid and have recently been getting back into it through Clangen and my friend Neil. My main blog is @meepdrawartgood
Hi I'm Neil, or Mike. Either works. I do the art and help story plan for the blog (^_^) 💖
My prnounce are he/hymn or she/hyr.I've been a warrior fan basically my whole life, and I have already run two other clangen blogs. My main blog is @neils-pen-to-paper
Even with only two submissions, this was a difficult decision to make, so I've decided...
To use BOTH of them combined!!!
There are too many traits I like from both designs to pick just one of them, and with only two I feel like the best option is to just combine them together with all the traits I love from both! So congratulations to @itcomeswhenwesleep and @oneclan-clangen , thank you both for helping bring Gorsepelt to life!!
Ghoststar and Frozenpelt take Shadowpaw on border patrol.
"UGHHHH, is this really a warrior's duties or are you just making me do stupid stuff??"
"Yes it is, Shadowpaw." Ghoststar grumbled, glancing back as his annoyed apprentice sharpened his claws against a tree. "Border patrols are one of the most important warrior duties, right next to feeding the clan."
"But no other clans live here!!" Shadowpaw whined, dragging long, dramatic lines into the bark. "What's the point in keeping up borders when there's nobody to fight?"
Ghoststar's ears pinned back and he opened his mouth, but Frozenpelt spoke first, trying to smile as his tail twitched incessantly. "Fighting other cats isn't why we keep our borders marked. Do you know what would happen if we didn't patrol around the territory?"
Shadowpaw huffed, plopping into a sit and batting at the fallen leaves. "We'd have a lot less to do?"
"Other creatures would move in, we may not be able to help cats in need, and we would miss incoming threats until they're already on top of the camp." Frozenpelt stated matter-of-factly. "Border patrol isn't about keeping other cats out, it's about surveying the territory to always be in the know about what's happening on our land, whether good or bad. We could find a fox hunting a kit that needs help, or we could find a new basking spot to relax at sunhigh. But we won't find either of those sitting around camp all day."
Shadowpaw paused for a moment, blinking in sudden thought. Then he grumbled and stood, shaking himself off as he padded ahead of the two. "Shouldn't there not even be any threats because of Greystar? Tallfog told me 'n sis he gave us a paradise or something."
Frozenpelt sighed, but a purr rose in his chest as he followed behind. "Greystar did drive off anything that would hurt us, that's true. But that doesn't mean some things don't slip through the cracks. Predators are deterred from our territory, not shut out from it. It's our job to make sure our safety is assured, even if we can rest easier than other cats."
…Ghoststar lagged behind, looking at Shadowpaw with furrowed brows as he sniffed at trees and shrubs. There was something…off about him. Something familiar. Like catching the scent of the same fox in a different burrow. It was why he'd made himself Shadowpaw's mentor, to try and figure out what it was. Something that whispered in his ear, hung over him like a cloud, and he couldn't shake the tugging in his heart that reminded him of…of…
"Ghoststar?"
He blinked slowly and raised his head to find Frozenpelt beside him, tail hovering over his back and a comforting warmth to his gaze. "You doing ok? You've been quieter than usual this past moon."
"…Have I?" he finally sighed, deflating a bit. "Sorry."
"No no, there's no need to apologize, I've just been worried about you. It's my job as deputy to make sure you're fit to lead, after all."
Frozenpelt purred in amusement and Ghoststar couldn't help a small smile, but his gaze drifted back down to the leaves, a maelstrom swirling in his mind. He was silent again, thinking, for so long that Frozenpelt quietly stepped in front of him, ears drooping slightly.
"…Is it Thistlepaw?"
By now, they knew eachother well enough that Frozenpelt instantly caught the flinch in Ghoststar's eyes, and he sighed, sitting down at his leader's side. "Losing an apprentice is rough on anyone, even a leader. You can let yourself grieve him, Ghoststar. I know you had high hopes for him, it's perfectly understandable what you're feeling."
Ghoststar stood, frozen in place, staring at his paws. Thistlepaw had been…very tough to train, especially after he and Blizzardpaw's mother passed. He was rude, disobeyed orders, and seemed to delight in tormenting others, but…Ghoststar had seen the makings of a good cat in him. He remembered the nights he'd found Thistlepaw sitting on the edge of camp, staring into the trees, and the surprisingly deep conversations that followed. He was a troubled kit, but one that just needed the right guidance, and Ghoststar was willing to put in the work needed to help him grow.
And then came the night that Frozenpelt showed up at his den with a shaking, sobbing Blizzardpaw. All of that hope for change, all his work to make something better, shattered like the splintering snap of a rotten tree branch.
…But that wasn't what bothered him the most right now.
"Frozenpelt?"
Frozenpelt smiled as Ghoststar raised his head, but it faltered at the hopeless look in his eyes. "Yes?"
"Do you think we're doing enough?"
That caught the deputy off guard enough to erase his smile entirely, and he tilted his head a bit in confusion. "…What?"
"Greyclan is supposed to be a paradise. We made it a paradise with our own paws, held up by the support of the mountain, free of threats and full of life."
Ghoststar paused, trembling claws sinking into the ground. "But it hasn't been a paradise for a long time, has it? Not since the massacre-most cats here weren't even alive to see what this clan is supposed to be. Horrible things keep happening, even though were doing what we're supposed to. Thistlepaw, your mother-the fox that attacked Hailthrush a few moons ago shouldn't have even been near the territory. Gorse…"
The name caught in Ghoststar's throat, and he swallowed it back down with a shudder, forcing himself to stop shivering. "We're running Greyclan as it always has been. We're gifting the Tunnels when necessary. We're doing everything right. So…why is our paradise fading? Why is the mountain abandoning us?"
…Frozenpelt didn't have an answer for that. He ended up staring at the grass too, fur bristling slightly. Ghoststar was right. Greyclan today didn't match up with the legends at all, nor with what he'd heard growing up from the old cats who were alive before the massacre. More and more cats were dying from unknown causes, disappearing mysteriously, more and more tales of monsters prowling the borders were leaking into camp. He thought about Lilacfeather's face, the sheer terror at the mere mention of whatever had attacked him. How long before something like that reached camp? How long before their dwindling luck ran out?
"…I agree, things have been rough for…years now. But maybe things will settle with time. Good times come to an end, but so do bad times, right?"
Ghoststar looked up as Frozenpelt gave his shoulder a comforting headbutt, the deputy's warm smile contrasting quite nicely against his namesake. "Or maybe things need to change for the better. Maybe we could grow into a new and better era of Greyclan. But whatever happens, I'll be by your side. You got that?"
…Ghoststar stared at him.
"…Yeah. I got it."
Frozenpelt smiled and started padding forward, but suddenly stopped, eyes widening as he stared at something in the distance. "SHADOWPAW!! Get back here, that part's over the border!!"
Ghoststar looked up.
Shadowpaw batted at the water of the river playfully, tail lashing as he tried to catch minnows passing him by. They had already reached the river? How long was he in his own thoughts for?
…The…the river…?
Ghoststar's ear flicked to the side, his fur standing on end. Faintly, from upstream, the sound of rushing water.
The river.
Shadowpaw looked up.
The tidal wave thundered down the mountain. Shadowpaw couldn't move.
…He couldn't exactly describe what had happened. One moment, he was staring up at certain death, the roar of the water almost drowning out the shrieks of his clanmates. The next, whatever had grabbed him by the scruff let go, sending him tumbling safely onto the grass. He watched the enormous wave sweep over any unfortunate brush in its path, shaking so horribly that he was sure he would collapse without the support of Ghoststar's leg. He almost died. He almost died.
…Frozenpelt was quiet, fur standing on end as he looked down at Ghoststar. His head hung low, his panting and coughing barely noticable over the crash of the river. Something black dripped from his nose, off of his tongue, and fell gently to the grass.
Greyclan was supposed to be a paradise. The mountain was supposed to provide through its power, though Frozenpelt had never actually seen anything he couldn't explain. That might've been why it rattled him so much now, to see something so clearly wrong happen right in front of his eyes.
Tallfog thinks Lilacfeather has interesting things to talk about.
"...Does your clan properly train its healers?"
"Hm? What do you mean?"
"I've been watching that Mothgrowl for a while, and she's just...she doesn't seem confident in her work at all. I come from a family of trained healers, I can tell when a cat doesn't like the job they're doing, and I've seen the slip-ups that can happen because of it. Maybe I don't understand the whole 'seeing ghosts' thing, but even without that, I don't think your clan deserves a healer who doesn't even want to be healing. Y'know what I mean?"

Mothgrowl realizes that Tallfog has been avoiding her.
"...Tallfog? I thought you wanted me to show you basic wound treatment earlier, where were you?"
"Ah-sorry, maybe later, I uh...promised Lilacfeather I'd go on patrol with him! Bye Mothgrowl!!"
"..."

The clan encounters Current, who requests to join. She is named Currentstrike.
"I'm not here to cause any trouble. I'm here to join you."
"Current...Tallfog told me about you. My name is Ghoststar. Why do you want to join Greyclan?"
"You know how to hunt on this mountain. This is the only place in my travel where I've never been able to catch anything that lives here. Show me how."
"...If you promise to help provide for our clan, you are welcome within our borders. Though you understand we will ask you to change your name, it is a tradition that-"
"I've seen how you name yourselves, I already have one in mind. Call me Currentstrike."
"...I suppose that will do."
Blizzardpaw accompanies Mothgrowl to gather herbs.
Mothgrowl...wasn't really sure what to do. She wasn't the best at comforting, and she'd never really been good with kits either. What was she supposed to do here??
She exhaled through her nose as she stopped for the third time to let Blizzardpaw catch up with her, scanning the undergrowth for even a speck of the familiar bright green. The camp garden was helpful, but moss was one of the things they'd never figured out how to grow, yet needed an abundant supply of, and Ghoststar had insisted Blizzardpaw accompany her on today's patrol. She liked Ghoststar, she thought he was a good leader and she trusted his judgement, but...how did he expect sending the poor traumatized apprentice with her to help him at all?
When Blizzardpaw finally padded up beside her, she caught it. An almost curious, hopeful look to her that he quickly smothered when their eyes met, his gaze locked on the grass at his feet. He wasn't very good at hiding things, she'd noticed. He kept going, expecting her to follow, but she sat down where she was with a soft sigh, tail curling around her paws. "Blizzardpaw."
Tunnel-dammit, she was trying to be gentle, but he still jumped nearly a foot in the air and whipped around, ever-fluffed fur standing even more on end. "Y-yy-yeah??"
"Is there anything you want to talk to me about?"
Blizzardpaw was quiet, staring for the longest time. Then he glanced around as if scanning for threats, paws shuffling in the dirt and tail tucked firmly between his legs. "N-no, I'm ffine, I-I-"
"I know that's not true. I'll ask again, is there something on your mind?"
As patient as she tried to be, she couldn't keep her tail tip from twitching when Blizzardpaw was silent again, shivering softly. She could see several different questions and emotions swirling through his eyes all at once, but his mouth couldn't seem to form any of the words, until he took a shaky breath and looked into the forest.
"...You...you talk with Starclan...r-right...?"
...Mothgrowl grit her teeth. Starclan had been quiet. Even in her brief excursions into the Tunnels, she had barely been able to have a conversation with any spirits before the whispers drowned them out. She could barely even feel their presence on the territory anymore.
"...Yes. Why?"
She held her breath to stifle a frustrated growl when Blizzardpaw went silent again. She knew he was hurting, she knew his mind carried wounds that needed healing. But she didn't know how. She knew how to heal any physical scrapes and sicknesses he carried, but she didn't know what herbs would heal the shadows that haunted his eyes, that made him jump at the slightest noise, that sent him into a panic and ended with him confined to his den until he was able to calm down. She didn't know how to help him. She didn't know what to do.
Blizzardpaw finally whined softly, gaze never leaving the trees. "...Do you......do you think h-he...he..."
Mothgrowl's heart sunk. Of course it was Thistlepaw. Something she didn't have answers for, even with the knowledge granted by the Tunnels. But she had to say something. So she stood up, padding to Blizzardpaw's side and resting her tail over his back.
"...I'm not sure. I haven't seen him. But that doesn't mean he can't be there." she mumbled, pressing into his side as he shuddered. "Starclan can be...fickle sometimes. Maybe he hasn't reached us yet, or he's busy. They have work to do up there, too."
Blizzardpaw didn't look at her. She gently rasped her tongue over his forehead. "But I know wherever he is, he wants you to keep going. He cared about you, even if...he wasn't the best at showing it. What do you think he'd say if he saw you like this?"
"...That I'm a mousebrain a-and I...need to stop acting like a newborn."
Mothgrowl tried and failed to stifle a chuckle. "What he means by that is that he wants you to be brave for him, he wants you to keep going forward instead of staying stuck in your fear. Do you think he's right?"
...Blizzardpaw didn't respond. The warmth building in Mothgrowl's heart fizzled out when he looked just as troubled as before, despite her attempts to reassure him. "...Blizzardpaw, is there something else you-"
"N-no, sorry." he hissed, quickly walking away from her and further along the path. Mothgrowl stared for a moment, fur bristling. Of course it didn't work. Of course he just shut down again, of course she wasn't good enough. His illness was getting worse and she...
She looked to the sky, ears pinned back. She couldn't see any stars in the evening sky, just the orange light of the sunset.
She hoped she would see the stars at night this time.
ALRIGHT, SO. I've tried to design this character multiple times and never been happy with the result so I've decided to give him to y'all!
This is Gorsepelt, someone you may have seen mentioned in Greyclan lore! He was the former deputy of Greyclan at around 60 moons and has long, spiky and tangled fur reminiscent of a thicket or brambles, and his personality trait is Ambitious.
I'll leave this open until the end of July (since I'm busy with artfight anyway), so go wild!! All designs will be properly credited and I'll probably post the runner ups along with the winner at the end of the month!

i need to be working on moon 4 and artfight, so of course i do Neither Of Those ♡ have the twin carousel meme with Blizzardpaw and Thistlepaw in the meantime tho
We had 48 people submit quilt blocks for our pride quilt for this month's event and we've created an awesome spread representing the clangen creator community's pride. As usual if you have a question about who drew a particular square we can probably identify them for ya :3
I love seeing how many healers in Clangen end up just going through it… Warblerstalk from @our-clangen, Shardshade from @duskclangen, Cottonwish from @daisyclan, and obv Rootriver from here.
oh this is awesome, I love the greylock series and to see it in clangen is super fun
TYSM, thats exactly why i wanted to make this clangen!! greylock is by far my favorite analog horror series and i wanna express how much i love it beyond the boundaries of analog horror!
"Greyclan is a horror Clangen that takes place in the Greylock analog horror series, and follows a clan of warriors who live along the cliffs of Mt. Greylock. These cats have strange practices, and an even stranger history, all revolving around a presence deep in the mountain. Something that beckons them closer, to see what lies beneath. been working on this one for a WHILE, but wanted to try one of these style challenges with Ghoststar and it was so much fun!! and also wanted to give some love to clangen blogs i like or ones that inspired Greyclan!
@mourningsbane was a HUGE inspiration to start my own horror clangen blog, and one of my favorites out there! and the only one thats made me feel GENUINE DREAD
@jumalanpelko an AMAZING comic that made me feel so many things, and honestly. i read it after making Greyclan, but being so similar its inspired me a LOT since i read it
@rooted-clangen another clangen blog that heavily inspired Greyclan and has a phenomenal story, im SO excited to see where Rootriver goes!
@nettleclan-clangen i cant give enough thanks to the other mod behind this blog, so go check out Nettleclan! i miss Fennelspots man
@forestclan-clangen one of the biggest inspirations for this blog with a FANTASTIC story, Forestclan is THE blog that made my decision to make this blog, analog horror clangens UNITE
@the-stars-and-the-tide a comic that has had me HOOKED ever since i discovered it, i cant wait to see where the story goes and how many problems Slumberpoppy can deal with before he loses it
@ashpaw-is-alone one i discovered more recently, but this along with rooted-clangen are my two favorites of the "single survivor" type clangen run, and i am VERY WORRIED for Ashsight
@missedclangen a clangen blog i feel is a bit underrated for how good it is, the setting and how characters deal with their situation has had me on the edge of my seat
@aphidclan-clangen a fantastic sparklecat clangen with such a rich depth of emotions, character interactions, and AMAZING designs, i had to give it some love by taking my own swing at sparkle Ghoststar!
"Oh dear, what in the world are you doing out here alone?! Come here sweetie, we need to get you out of these woods!"
HI as soon as i saw this i HAD to participate in another of @rooted-clangen 's YCHs, and who better to adopt little Rootkit than resident religious mama, Tallfog!
considering theres no other clans near Greyclan, maybe in this AU the Tunnels called out to Rootkit and beckoned her closer, and strangely she only had to wander for a few days before being found by Tallfog 2 moons before moon 0, despite the ruins of Hymnclan supposedly being many miles away...
of course, upon being adopted by Tallfog, she gets two new siblings!! Shadowkit doesnt mind having a new sister, but Emberkit would be furious at having yet another kit to contend with for approval (though she may just be worried about her...) but i think she'd eventually come around to being a fierce protector of her.
despite definitely still being interested in herbs, her lack of Sight would keep Root from being allowed as a medicine cat, but Mothgrowl would still be immediately drawn to her and become very fond of her, even teaching her medical knowledge with the help of her mentor Lilacfeather (who would definitely also grow close to her, also being rejected from the healing role)
maybe...just maybe, she could even get Ghoststar to eventually break tradition...and appoint her as backup medicine cat, Rootmask, despite not being able to see Shadows.
Who knows how she got there, what is important is Tallfog found her and Greyclan accepted her! She grows up with siblings and a doting parent, and being far from her original home she isn't plagued by the constant dreams and ghosts- though The Tunnels whisper to her in ways she cannot understand. While interested in herbs, she's made into a warrior and pursues it with a fierce determination.
As she grows older she is allowed to learn some healing, morphing into a sort of combat medic who focused on fighting but helps treat urgent wounds during battles as needed. She tends to be rather competitive and ends up injured a lot due to her impulsive nature. Perhaps she even aims her sights towards leadership, wanting to live up to an old whisper in her head of some sort of greatness...
