Just one month after his career-making Town Hall show in New York, Bob Dylan was poised to break big in America by appearing coast-to-coast on the premier talent showcase of the day. Instead, the moment was lost after a producer on the show, advised by the network’s attorneys, told Bob that his intent to perform “Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid Blues” would subject CBS to a potential libel suit. Instead of selecting another song, or altering the lyrics, Bob politely declined and took a pass.
Though conventional wisdom held that taking such a stand was potentially career suicide, the publicity brought him the kind of credibility for artistic integrity that dovetailed nicely with the appeal he held among the idealistic - a net plus overall.
