i also wanna be abundantly clear in case my last ask isn’t that i think while it can be very easy to act like acts of racism or other bigotry are the result or one team, one market, or one fanbase, and go “of course it be x” its more important to remember

1) professional sports in north america are being operated under a racist, homophobic, transphobic, sexist, ableist, and otherwise bigoted society, and will reflect it as such as most industries do. the capitalist class who owns these teams profits off systematic bigotry and won’t change without pressure

2) pretending these are isolated incidents, by player or team or what not, is counterproductive. Of course we should punish a individual player or team when they perpetrate those acts, but the problem is from something much bigger, and by acting like it would never happen in your city, team, roster, market, state, wherever, is harmful

regardless of how tonight finishes this isn't a celebration, what was said tonight was disgusting and has no place in the league.

The NHL is going to be incentivized to sweep the entire incident under the rug and wave it off claiming nothing bad happened. If there’s the tiniest shred of plausible deniability, they will run with it. They don’t want a member of the stanley cup final team to have said something racist because it’s poor marketing for the league and that’s the only thing the NHL cares about: views and profit. Fans, especially any hockey media members that have direct access to the league and the power to ask Stars players these questions, need to hold them accountable to not only conduct a fully transparent investigation but actually release all available audio and video.

if you’re a hockey fan who is feeling pretty mad about this whole nhl is clearly racist and doesn’t care business and you wanna make a difference, what can be done?? 1) boost voices on social media demanding change. there’s obv the hda but also pleeenty of hockey journalists (of colour) and obv hockey fans of colour constantly talking about this. retweet them, boost them, block racist people giving them abuse. retweet people questioning the team social media accounts or official nhl account. 2) contact the nhl/teams and tell them to do better (plenty of people have been posting their messages on twitter if you don’t know what to write). 3) actively support players of colour all the time, not just when they say something about racism. make gifsets of your favourite players of colour, reblog them, support them on their social media etc.
