Items to include in your Book of Shadows
Everyone’s book will be different because all Witches are different. This list is a bunch of examples I have come across over the years of things you could include in your BOS if you so desired. Nothing on this list is mandatory, nothing here is required. If you don’t know what something is, please feel free to ask! If you don’t think that something on the list is for you, awesome, don’t include it in yours.

Long story short: what do you want to put into it?
It is your book, to do with as you will. Put in whatever you think you will want / need to know, that reflects your style of practicing, etc.
In a tl;dr version of all those links, and a modified version of [this post], here’s some ideas on things you can put into a grimoire (based mostly around informational purposes).
This list is not complete / extensive / ; moreso, it has a lot of different suggestions to give you some ideas of things you can put in.
about you as a witch
these could be in the format of journal pages
what you want out of witchcraft, information about your natal / birth chart if you like astrology, any notes of things you do day to day, etc.
terminology of terms within witchcraft and magic
spell timing, such as Sabbats and esbats, moon phases, days of the week, time of the day, etc.
correspondences for herbs, essential oils, crystals / minerals, colors, the four elements, planetary associations, etc.
substitutions for particular items like herbs, crystals, etc.
any safety precautions for working with certain herbs, crystals, etc.
information on how to determine personal correspondences and associations
magical / non-magical materials that can be used in spells
information on the “basics” of witchcraft
what intent means, and how to work with it
what it means to visualize, and alternatives if you can’t
what meditation can do for magic, and how to do it
what channeling energy means, and how to do it
what it means to charge / enchant objects, and methods to do it
setting up an altar / magical work space, and how to do it
information on any religions you work within
example: for Wicca, you may wish to write out the Wiccan Rede, how to cast a circle, how to call the four corners / elements / guardians of the watchtowers, how to set up an altar, etc.
information on any deities you work with / wish to work with
offering ideas for any deities you work with
invocations for any deities you work with
rituals / dedications / prayers to any deities you work with
information on any spirits you work with / wish to work with
offering ideas for any spirits you work with (i.e. the fae, elemental spirits like sylphs and salamanders, etc.)
information on the history of witchcraft
information on familiars and working with animals in magic
information on varieties of magic
examples: energy work, candle magic, crystal magic / crystal grids, sachet magic, knot magic, kitchen magic / tea magic, bath magic, traditional magic, urban / modern magic, chaos magic, pop culture magic, green magic, hedgework, spirit work, shadow work, blood magic, sex magic, necromancy / death magic, etc.
MAGIC NO LONGER LOOKS LIKE A WORD TO ME
any safety precautions for working with certain varieties of magic
any divination methods you wish to try
examples: definitions of the tarot cards, tarot spreads, cartomancy interpretations, definitions of runes, reading tea leaves (tasseomancy) / coffee grounds, tips on pendulum reading, etc.
spells that you write yourself, or sigils you create yourself
any notes and observations you made when testing that spell / using it
spells or sigils from external sources that you may want to use and/or reference
specific categories of spells
examples: protection, cleansing / purification, banishing, binding, healing, new beginnings / moving on, happiness, self love, relationships, friendships, glamours, confidence, strength, energy, luck, money / wealth, school, employment, sleep, dreams / nightmares, divination, magic amplification, etc.
recipes for potions, powders, oils, tinctures, etc.
chants and incantations
blessings
curses
information on any magical groups or covens you participate in
coven rules and guidelines, members lists and contact information, etc.
I hope that helps you! Good luck!
what to put in your grimoire:
Obviously, you don’t have to include all of these ideas in your grimoire: they are merely ideas, prompts and inspiration for your own research and documentation. Similarly, this list is not exhaustive and there may be other things you want to include in your grimoire.
This is in no particular order, you may wish to organise your grimoire into sections; but I personally don’t overthink the structure of my grimoire and I just make sure I have a good contents page.
You may also want to include things such as print outs, post cards, your own drawings and sketches, paintings, and decorations. Some people add extra pages or cut outs, flaps and envelopes. what you include is up to you and dependent on what you desire from your grimoire. If you are using a notebook, I would recommend sticking an envelope on the back page so you can keep any small or lose pages in it.
So, here are some suggestions for things to put in your grimoire:
a contents page (this is important to organise your information for future reference)
information on any witchy festivals that you celebrate. For instance, when are they, what are their origins, how are they celebrated, their correspondences and associations
information on the moon phases. What are the moon phases, an almanac for the moon phases for the upcoming year, what associations and correspondences are associated with each moon phase, what types of magic are suited to each moon phase
colour correspondences
information on the elements. What are the elements, what are their associations and correspondences
a record of your sigils, runes and symbols. Draw them out and note their purpose
a record of the spells that you have done. What are the ingredients and methods of the spell, why did you do it, how did you do it, when did you do it, what were the results and effects, what changes would you make next time
similarly, a record of any rituals that you have done
information on witchy plants that you would like to grow
an entry for each witchy festival celebrated. How did you celebrate it, did you do any further research, are there things you would like to do to celebrate it next time
information on all the crystals that you own. What are they, what do they look like, what are their uses and associations, what have you used them for
practical information you have researched, such as how to create sigils, charge, activate and use them. Other examples include fire safety
a directory for any herbs and plants that you use in your craft. What do they look like, in what conditions do they grow, what are their uses and correspondences, what do you use them for
a sketch or photograph of your altar or work space with labels explaining the layout
information on tarot references
information on any witchy DIYs you’ve done. What did you create, how did you create them, why did you create them, what purpose do they serve, how do they work, how did they turn out
a record of any witchy recipes you make. What is the recipe, what is the recipe good for, is it for a specific witchy festival
specific references for themes that you use a lot. For instance, items for bringing calm (crystals, plants, colours, scents…)
information on folklore, historical accounts, or anthropology that you have researched. Such as the history of witches where you live, or the folklore of a particular time period you are interested in. Examples I have include Selkies, geographical features in Western Scotland, and Scottish Fair Folk
information on divination techniques that you are interested in using, such as palmistry, pendulums and shufflemancy
recipes for things you have made such as bath soaks and tea blends. What is in them, why have you used those particular ingredients, are they effective
information on aspects of magic that are specific to you. For instance, I have information on how to conserve energy in witchcraft
research on deities, pantheons, spirits, or the fair folk that you would like to work with. What are they known as, when were they first known in the historical record, what are their origins, what folk lore is associated with them, why would you like to work with them, what or where are they associated with, what are their patronages
information on ways to create spells and types of spells. Which of these suit you and how can you make a spell creation method which is unique to you
information on magic using a specific ingredient or method. Such as spell jars, water magic, hair magic…
information on your astrological chart
traditions and superstitions that are common in your family or community
an index at the back for specific ingredients and themes. Such as where specific crystals, herbs, festivals, or moon phases have been mentioned

GRIMOIRE INFO & IDEAS
Grimoire / Book of Shadows
A Grimoire mostly known as Book of Shadows is basically a Witches Diary!
It holds Spells, Divination, Corespondents, your Personal notes etc.
Your Grimoire is YOURS! you make the rules, there is no certain way a Grimoire has to be written and set up!
Always make sure your Grimoire is protected and doesn’t fall into the hands of others! A protective Sigils is always good to use!
Some keep several Grimoires specific for one topic each, i.e One for Spells, one for Tarot, one for Dreams one for Recipes etc. once again your Grimoire your rules!
What to use for your Grimoire:
You can use everything from binders to composition books, you can make your own binding, even papers in a folder. However you want to keep your Grimoire is up to you. Some even keep an online and digital Grimoire on their phones and/or computers.
If you don’t want to use too many pages for one topic you can add Envelopes, Envelopes are awesome to keep Star maps, portable Divination spreads and boards and dried flowers, herbs, pictures etc.
You can keep your Grimoire simple or decorate it with symbols, drawings, washi tape, pressed flowers etc. if you mess up a page you can paint over it or glue something over it or however you’d like to fix it.
Keep and Index so you know where everything is, color coding is an awesome option too.

Grimoire Ideas📖✨
since i’m starting to work on getting my own Grimoire better organized and figuring out what i think fits best in it for me, i feel like i should log some ideas that have helped me in my journey in hopes that it could help someone else just starting out. but just remember that your Grimoire is your own and personal to you and you alone so you don’t need to put everything in if it doesn’t vibe well with you or doesn’t fit into your craft. your book should hold things that are personal to you and your craft and what you believe and you don’t need to have every bit of knowledge in your book.

obviously you can pick and choose whatever works best for yourself and your craft, and i don’t even have some of these in my own book but still thought they would be helpful to include for witches like me who are just starting out who need ideas of what their books can hold! i’ll probably start posting more about my grimorire and how i keep it organized as well!
if you think i’ve missed anything feel free to add on more ideas to pass on to your fellow baby witches!

Tips on making a grimoire
If you don’t know where to start you can begin by combining info about yourself and include that in a section and go from there.📖
Examples:
- fact about your starsign and element♋
- maybe your birth Chart
- Your favourite smells/crystals/animals and their magical properties
- if you’re into cartomancy and tarot you could include your bithcard and/or aspiration cards
- your type of witchcraft and some history about it
When researching you can look up things you’re interested in like mythical creatures and parts of the practice you want to work with.🔮
For better organisation if that’s your thing you can work on it section by section 🌻 eg:
-section on yourself
-section on your altars and/or shrines
-section on deities
-section on sigils
-section on divination
-section on healing
If you’re stuck for things to write about you can use these for prompts:
-self care❤
-recipes🍞
-herbs and caring for them/drying them🌿
-candles and incense
-salt (it’s actually pretty interesting)
-cleansing and grounding
-A care guide for a particular plant you like🌷
-your favourite season or holiday
-types of potions
-charms from around the world
-a page for the history of something you find fascinating (for me it’s monsters and cryptids)
-your ritual wardrobe👗
-self defence during rituals
-some references to look back on
-of course if you cba writing you can always find or draw pretty pictures.
Some things you can keep track of as a witch:
🌙 Your moon cycle (also known as your period). If you’re into the self-love side of witchcraft and want to focus more on your body and it’s wants and needs, you might want to think about keeping track of your period. You can then create spells, rituals and meditations that correspond with the moon phase and day(s) that you’re menstruating. <— this is obviously for those that are menstruating.
🌻 Your garden. If you have a garden (even if it’s just 3 little baby herb plants in your window, hey a garden is a garden) keep track of how well your plants or herbs are doing. Write down when you water them, how much sunlight (and moonlight, if that’s your thing) they got. You could even write down any emotional vibes you’re getting from your garden.
🔮 Your spells and rituals. Keeping track of your spells doesn’t just help you remember when you did what spell and what it was for, but it also allows you to go back and write in how well that spell worked out for you. And if it worked out well, because you kept track of it, you’ll know how to use it again in the future.
💰 Witchy buys. This is important if, like me, you tend to do a little bit of overspending on all the witchy supplies. But since I started to keep track of what I’m buying, using and not using, I’ve saved a ton of money on unnecessary things.
🙏 Gratitude. Keep a growing list of all the things you’re grateful for. It’s great to look back on in the future and it helps you keep perspective of your own life and spiritual journey.
🍵 Your tea. Okay, this is just something I do but I love to keep track of all the different teas I try. I think tea is considered a very witchy drink and therefore some of us are a little more serious about our tea drinking lol. But I just love taping in the little packaging, that my tea came in, into my journal and writing a little bit about it and how it made me feel and what it made me think about.
🌦️ The weather. This is important, to me, because I believe the weather can affect us and how we feel, think and behave. I like to have a record of what the weather was like when I casted a spell, did a ritual or did a reading so I can go back later and see if I feel that might have affected the outcomes.
The Eternal.
