But let’s not forget that in the men’s community, although very educated and with a great respect to each other, there were no place for slobbery public feeling (I don’t know how I can express THAT in English, folks! HELP) and our guys were not sensitive coquettes – whatever happened inside, sex, drugs and rock’n’roll reigned outside.

At the beginning of the fall tour of America in 1978, Fred presents this song:”A lot of people call this next song Spread Your Legs. It started off being called Spread Your Wings, but you can call it what you’d like.”

And literally at the next concert in New Orleans:”Some people call this song Spread Your Legs. And I like it that way.” Before Love Of My Life, Freddie quips, “I’m going backstage for a rest – maybe get a blow job. Hell, it’s Hallowe’en, right?“

Did John smile at that moment? How does John feel about this really? God knows.

And few more pennies about “male collective” – show in Chicago. Queenlive.ca quote: “After Dreamer’s Ball, Brian says, “We appreciate you listening to these silly things as well as the normal things. The rest of the group have actually left in disgust now, so we’re gonna have to go on as a two-some.” Freddie adds, “Yeah, I think those two have gone backstage to get some blowjobs or something like that. They have all the luck, and we do all the work!” After the song, Freddie asks Roger and John, “Nice blowjobs?” The ever-modest Brian even adds, “They’ve all come back again with smiles on their faces.”

Naughty boys. Or dirty-tonged Freddie?? ))

SPREAD YOUR WINGS (part 5)

Deacon, of course, has opened Pandora’s Box in 77′ interview, with his “there’s a meaning and references to my personal things“. I want to dive deep and find out. Why didn’t any of these useless journalists question him more thoroughly? Why did friendly biographers get off with just a simple list of hit parade places and release dates in different countries when they had the opportunity to ask John personally??

On the other hand there’s something in this song, beyond mere words and a sketchily sketched situation, maybe something very heart-wrenching? Something you can imagine in your life? Naked honesty that you can feel in your bloody skin? Or it’s just me..

At it’s simplest, it’s a song that makes me live. Wraps me up warmly and kindly asks to keep moving. Good music is often empathetic, our link to it more about feelings than meaning/lyrics. That’s some true thing inside of the song. It just feels like – you can do it, I know, I believe in you. And that’s what I need to get me out of my Emerald bar. Deacon’s simple uplifting songs, with hearts of gold (c) Not my words, but I absolutely agree. PS I kinda sang ‘Spread your wings’ long before I’ve learned English enough to understand lyrics of it ))

SPREAD YOUR WINGS (part 4)

And the last post about “Spread your wings”, with some historical anecdotes.

The shooting of the video for song was also unique. Just imagine – 2 videos (We will rock you), on the same location, in the same clothes, completely different mood of the songs. HOW?! Only Queen could be so careless and relaxed about rules of PR and show business.

It was filmed at back yard of freshly owned Roger’s mansion (wait for better conditions? no way!), he tried to sing back vocals (in no back vocals song), a little bit to much drunk Fred vomited in rhododendrons (if I’m not mistaken), at backseat of Freddie’ Rolls-Royce Queen signed a contract (very strange one – they fired John Reid from Queen manager position, but on a very good conditions for him, they stayed friends, however), Brian didn’t want to freeze his beloved Red Special (so, it’s white replica), John with bass mimicked piano playing (I bet, Freddie refused to put off warm gloves for it!) and wiped his cute red nose, and now, we are wiping our eyes, looking at this sweet home made video.

What a time, man, today’s so called musicians can’t scratch an ass without team of stylists and managers. PS Deacon’s Chicago BlackHawks jacket from just finished ‘News of the world’ tour (obviously is too light for Britain’s January, but…

SPREAD YOUR WINGS (part 3)

Let’s look at the text of ‘Spread your wings’.

The lyrical hero – check, a hint of the past – check, the description of the present – check, story – check, but without catharsis. Did Sammy spread his wings, or was he left sweeping the hated Emerald bar, swallowing his big ambitions and dreams?

The only line, very last, Freddie sings it so passionately is “Come on honey! Fly with me!” I think it was Freddie’ personal addition, because there’s nothing in the whole song that points at outside help for our little Sammy. Can it be considered as Mr. Mercury’s answer? I think so, yes. Deacky couldn’t help but see it.

In personal life Freddie at 1977 had a dramatic change, after “you all know but SHUT UP”-coming out, he finally relaxed and went really WILD. Famous ‘find-fuck-forget’ set-up was born in the American tours, and in next album Fred clearly enough responds to everyone – Don’t Stop Me Now, I’m having such a good time. How does it correlate with ‘Spread your wings’? Deacon couldn’t help but noticing it, either.

What did #BoRhap do with one of Deacon’s most lyrical songs? Well, it was quoted in one of the nastiest and ugliest scenes of the movie.

That’s for you to judge – happily married and many-time-a-father “movieDeacon” is offended by solo career of “movieFreddie” (who – by the way – was not the first to go solo at real life) and offers him to buy a family, “Fred” is so shamelessly rich now, so why not? Living in the closet “Freddie” with a disaster in his personal life and certainly the absence of any children….

Here I look at Dr. May, who without blinking an eye said: “Yes, everything’s great in BoRhap, I know BETTER than you!” To imagine in real life such a disgusting dialogue and John Deacon, vindictively kicking on the painful points of Freddie, of course, is unbelievable (the real truth is Freddie was so upset another bitter ended relationships, he came to studio at LA and shout at band exactly the BoRhap quote about ‘you have wives, kids, family, I have nothing!‘ but without ugly continuation from John or someone else of course…)

SPREAD YOUR WINGS (part 2)

What exactly does the Emerald bar represent in ‘Spread your wings’? The line about Since he was small Had no luck at all Nothing came easy to him…. could point directly to Deacky’s childhood. His talent was not undisputed and shining bright, like Freddie’, music was not his love from the first sight, it wasn’t his life (as we now know, he was able to leave it, at least public performances), the choice of instrument was a fluke and he had to work hard to reach a good level. And the constant “critical voice” of some “boss”, which explicitly said: You’re always dreaming You’ve got no real ambition you won’t get very far…. it may be the voice of his mother who saw the softness and sensitivity of son and worried where his love for music would lead him, what price fame and the stage would ask.

John, despite the mentioned slow “feeling home” thing, fell in love with QUEEN from the beginning. THAT was his love at first sight.

1973’s note (just 4 years before ‘Spread your wings’ appeared!): “Both Nigel Bullen and his wife Ruth felt they already knew of Queen’s importance to John, but they were astonished by his white hot intensity. Before the evening was finished John Deacon was talking of Queen’s ten-year plan and going into great detail about future world tours; it all seemed extremely imaginative, though they didn’t mention it. “His personality is usually quiet and reserved but he was the most animated I have ever seen him that night,” said Ruth Bullen. “He spent hours talking about Queen, constantly playing the album through. It was all done so intelligently, with such microscopic detail. He was talking about other bands and how they’d been ripped off and how everything had to be so well organised from the very beginning.”

With other hand, all childhood and youth ambitions (Deacon was 26 y/o on moment) already fed, he’s with QUEEN, and group – on top of the world, John was recognized in pubs, asked for autographs (he’s shy and angry, but agreed).

Wings already spread wider than ever before and another winged creature named Freddie Mercury took Deacky under his wing (how many bad wing metaphors can I insert in one sentence?!). So, maybe this song is referred with the coldness of hotels, early wake-up calls, sound checks in huge halls and loneliness? He spends his evenings alone in his hotel room Keeping his thoughts to himself he’d be leaving soon Wishing he was miles and miles away Nothing in this world nothing would make him stay And at home (he already has his own!) warm wife and a couple of boys are waiting for him. He had enough money to live out the rest of life without needing it like he did when he was a kid. Or are these subtle allusions to a place where John still had a big hole, compared to the rest of the Queens? He can’t sing.

In 1977 Roger was first who make a solo attempt, with single “I wanna testify”. And Deacon in an interview (later) is piercingly honest: “Yes. Of course, I do it’s awful it’s like being in a wheelchair in a way because you can’t actually express yourself in the way that you’d like to. If I could sing it would be lovely. No, it’s a handicap, a great handicap, in terms of writing songs. I wish I could but I can’t.”

SPREAD YOUR WINGS (part 1)

For creative people, their art is another way to “talk”. Usually, when talking about QUEEN, we analyze only Freddie, and to a certain extent Brian, as the author of almost half of the songs in their catalog. But John was no less “talkative” in the rare songs of his own composition. You just need to be able to listen and think a little more. Let’s try example of Spread your wings.

In 1977, Deacon brings another suspiciously personal song, “Spread your wings”. It easily can be mistaken as abstract story, but John says: “The song has to do with a number of personal experiences from recent years. I’d rather not say about what in detail, because I don’t like to explain songs. People should figure it out for themselves, I think!”. People are ready to figure it out, John. At least, me. What has happened in your last few years?

After release ‘A night at the opera’ album guys finally have been able to top musical Olympus (press tried to make it as hard as possible), and with the next album their position has strengthened. But this did not mean that they could relax and rest, no, Queen continued to work hard for 10 months a year on tours and even harder at the recording studios.

The lyrical hero of song is Sammy (my God, QUEEN has never had such clumsy masks in lyrics) is so reminiscent of a certain Johnny, who is LOW (suсh a clever word usage – weak or cheap or insignificant or depressed?), and can not be strong enough to break out of the usual observation of a big dream, and persuades himself: Pull yourself together ‘Cause you know you should do better…. Now I can sit down and write an essay “The Image of the little man in the lyrics of John Deacon.” Shy, nervous, irritable and worried one(c). Sensitive, but hiding under an impenetrable mask of logic man with an eternal smile.

Earlier, in 1976, Freddie said in an interview about Deacon’s songs: “It’s nice that 4 people can write and they’re all strong, ‘cos y’know, if John or anyone else wrote a song that we thought was weak, it would never be on the album. So he has had to work really hard on it to keep up the standard.”

Do you feel it? THAT pressure? They wanted from John not just ‘songs’, but very good ones, songs of comparable quality with main song-writing divas of QUEEN. Anybody can feel low…

And a little more geeky Deacky things.

Deacon played acoustic guitar not only in his own songs, but was involved in other people’s (because he is skilled one – do you remember Classical Gas(!) at his sixteen?). For example, he can be heard in “Father to Son“, May’ “She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettos)” and “In the Lap of the Gods“.

Also I will mention gentle ‘My Melancholy Blues’ written by Fred. There is no backing vocals or guitars, only piano, voice and delicate bass. On the record Deacon used a regular fretted bass, on stage he plays fretless bass and sit (once!).

Another widely known (still love it though!) fact from QUEEN history – May had asked Deacon to play double bass as a joke but a couple of days later he found Deacon in the studio with the instrument, and he had already learned to play it. It was for ‘39‘, but in ‘Bring Back That Leroy Brown‘ Deacon played a line on the double bass too (it’s not easy, guys, even for bass player!).

And a little fact gem: “Sleeping on the Sidewalk“, a blues excursion, was written and sung by May. It is the only song in their discography to be recorded (except for the vocals) in 1 take. On a close inspection, May sings with an American accent, Deacon can be heard playing the wrong notes in some bass parts, and May can also be heard laughing at the end of the song. It is also one of the few Queen songs that does not feature Mercury, however, he did perform the lead vocals in live performances. May has confirmed the first take of the backing track was used – the atmosphere as natural as possible.

Why Sleeping on the Sidewalk is a treasure? I have a big dream – to see how the QUEEN really wrote and recording, not on camera, not on purpose, clean and edited, but with the fights (2 days did not speak after), with the difficulty at easy places and divine revelations, with small and large technical findings, with endless takes and emptiness after.

And if you say there’s One vision documentary!, I’ll drag this quote from Brian: “We made a very rare decision to have documentary cameras in there while we were recording, but the documentary cameras actually ruined the whole thing, because I think everyone was so conscious of them being there – everyone sort of played to the cameras. And when I watch any pieces of that now, I think it’s totally false.” After it, I look at ‘one dump, one turd, two tits, John Deacon’ with great suspicion, I can’t separate the acting on camera from the normal boys’ behavior (but it’s all we really have). So viva la naturale, what a pity that is my dream is unlikely to come true.

Technical note (2/2)

Deacon could not fit his work into the first 2 albums, all songs were already written long time ago and the main song writing forces could not move. So, he started at 3rd album, and then stably brought one or two songs. I can’t say, is it quota or lack of songs ))).

Well, list of John’ songs and his decisions to add something (someone) to his bass: Misfire – Deacon’s first individual composition for the band, and featured him playing most guitars, except May’s solo (he was extremely skilled guitarist!), You’re my best friend – Wurlitzer electronic piano, commonly called the Wurly (Fred refuses to play it, Deacky refuses to play grand piano), You and I – acoustic guitar, Spread your wings – piano is played by Mercury, although Deacon mimes it in the music video. Brian May on the electric guitar, Roger Taylor on the drums, and John Deacon on the bass and acoustic guitars, Who Needs You – along with May, plays Spanish guitar. May also plays maracas and Mercury plays a cowbell, If You Can’t Beat Them – one of the few songs by Deacon where May plays all the guitars, In Only Seven Days – acoustic and electric guitar, Another one Bites the Dust – consisted of Deacon playing almost all instruments: bass guitar, piano, electric guitar (chunky Strat), and handclaps. Roger Taylor added a drum loop and Brian May contributed noises with his guitar and an Eventide Harmonizer. There are no synthesizers in the song: all effects are created by piano, electric guitars and drums, with subsequent tape playback performed in reverse at various speeds. Finally, sound effects were run through the harmonizer for further processing. Need Your Loving Tonight – acoustic guitar. I stop at Flash Gordon (1980) soundtrack for now.

Technical note (1/2)

QUEEN mostly powered by 2 mega monsters authors, Fred and Brian. And sort of unwritten law was the person who brought the song in would get how to record it. What about 2 another not-so-productive writers?

Let’s start with Roger. Here his songs in order (I will stop at 1980) and how he record them, additionally the classics of his involvement – vocals+percussion: Modern Times Rock and Roll, + classic set up (back vocals he often shared with Freddie, this is true for many songs), The Loser in the End, + too (or even gave the lead on live performances, except for favorite songs), Tenement Funster + all guitar parts played by John in May’s absence (maybe that’s why it’s my favorite Roger’s song). I’m in Love with My Car + guitar (together with a Bri), Drowse + rhythm guitar. May played slide guitar during this (and you can hear it!) Sheer Heart Attack + rhythm guitar and bass (!) were played by Taylor, apart from some guitar “screams” by May during the instrumental section. Fight from the Inside +rhythm guitar and bass guitar; borrowed Deacon’s instrument. It is also one of the few songs in the band’s discography recorded almost entirely by one member (yes, QUEEN can afford such things). Fun It +again Roger for everything +used Syndrum pads (bass/drums) (so much disco!) Rock It (Prime Jive) +classics Coming Soon + classic.

And to interpret things that we have said to him as we think they are, no thanks.

We can analyze him and his legacy, but definitely we shouldn't say "oh, I know exactly what it means and what he thought". Here - nobody fool enough to say that.

Deacon is a "puzzle of billions tiny transparent glass pieces" as Gff said, I agree. We can go further when "premature ejaculation song ha ha" tho.

DEACON’S SONGS (part 6)

Well, let’s continue journey through the history of QUEEN and Deacon’s songs from the emotional side. Here’s an extra from the “News of the world” documentary. Do you like to look out for 3 pixels of John for a second and a half like me?

*******GFF posted a small expert from “News of the world” documentary, where boys do a soundcheck before show. There are 3 seconds of John indeed. – @lennydear

Albums “A Night at the Opera” and “A Day at the races“, as we know, were composed at the same time, but recorded in turn. Between 2 releases (November 1975 and December 1976) – hard tour schedule at Britain, America, Japan and Australia, then work at studio and new tour. At what point did John write his 3rd song?

‘You and I‘, sweet little thing, but as John said, “one or two thoughts, a story or a meaning” is always there. I believe it can be related to his wife. Song also shows Deacky’s skills in playing the acoustics. Usually, author of song decided how and who will play.

I wonder how Deacky got into songwriting. They say he didn’t compose for 2 albums, because wasn’t sure about his place in band.

Now it is considered a well-known fact that Freddie contributed to the disclosure of the potential of Deacon not only as a bass player with a unique lyrical touch, but also as a writer of good catchy pop songs. At the same time Bri says that John wasn’t too loud about his ideas, he didn’t shake it a million times in front of the group, it was necessary to ask: do you HAVE something?

Did the creative atmosphere in the team make him brave? Did the elders promise to beat him up? That’s a puzzle))). But the result is good, John’s songs, even not the famous ones, catchy AF.

I finish (for now) with John’s songs from “News of the world” album with quote about “Who needs you“: “That arose spontaneously in the studio. I wrote it with the help of an acoustic guitar and it turned out to lend itself perfectly to that approach. We’ve also done a reggae-like version. Our songs change constantly when we’re in the studio.”

A classic example of John’s light-weight song, which of course has a little twist (I like the line “dog eat dog in this rat race“). I will not guess about the addressee, everything is too vague and uncertain here (who said Veronica? Yeah, close the door on the way out, please). We have an early studio version with Freddie and John talking, and John sounds incredibly, unbearably serious and professional (gosh, his guitar skills are amazing!), and Fred has a ringing voice 10 years younger and his “Lovely!” so cute! (please, find it on Youtube and…. enjoy!) John: —How was that? Freddie: —Oh! It’s lovely!

DEACON’S SONGS (part 5)

As an introvert, I understand that sometimes you can expose your deepest secrets to the public, turning it into a joke. Write words that only a couple of people will understand, and for everyone else it will be just words. It’s so simple – a song about love – means to woman, author married – means to a wife. So easy to confuse – somebody at record studio said – oh, what a lucky woman, Mrs Deacon, all agreed, and the author looked into the warm brown eyes of one to whom he wrote it, and knew, knew exactly, he understood everything right.

In his 3D book Brian wrote under this photography Deacky: “John looks happy and mischievous here. This pretty much how John was in 1975“. Of course, he was happy! Beloved wife, little baby son, an amusing best friend and a band that is like family, bright perspectives in music, a whole future ahead… He finally settled down and can trust, he writes music and plays bass. Amazing summer of amazing year of mischievous boy.

Deacky will be pretty straight about meaning the unpretentious ‘One year of love‘ (for film’s love story scene), but 20 years acting shady about his first big hit ‘You’re my best friend‘.

QUEEN never use personal life or relationships within the band to stimulate sales, they make music, not sell pretty faces or dirty underwear (as many artists do now). At some point a special relationships between Freddie and John were visible even for fans, question №46 of Fan Club Questionnaire is formulated so accurately, but John resolutely fights back “We all 4 literally quite close to each other!” (!).

Another important song of John or even more interesting – John&Freddie collaboration (Friends Will Be Friends) will be reviewed later (but you can take its text and finds familiar triggers for both authors – the children, the other half, lover, life without him etc).

Later he didn’t confess their special bond either, not even at Freddie Mercury Tribute or related interviews (or books or memoirs), because there are no interview (or… you’ve got a point) of him after Fred’s passing. Did they talk about it when Deacky visited Freddie in his last days in Garden Lodge? Did they need to talk about it? We will never know.

Further life of John will continuation of his loyalty in deeds not words – he finishes ‘Made in Heaven‘ album and disappears, still helping band behind the curtain though. “As far as we are concerned, this is it. There is no point carrying on. It is impossible to replace Freddie.”

DEACON’S SONGS (part 4)

Deacky had a very good teacher in prevarication and autobiographical texts – Fred could tell in interview one, in other interview – another, friends vowed – the third!, group thought – the fourth, how it was really – only Freddie knows. Canonical examples of it “Killer Queen” and” Love of my life“. Second song stirred a lot of controversy – after the film everyone is convinced that it is dedicated to Mary Austin (thank you, Brian!), the old-timers hinted at different subject.

More specific songs, but also not widely advertised “Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy” about the relationship with David Minns, and to him, some time later – “Don’t Try Suicide” when he really ‘try’. David didn’t need confirmation or interviews to know what the songs are about. 2 more songs are dedicated straight to people – “Death on two legs” and “Flick of the wrist“. Norman Sheffield was loud enough about the first one, everyone know, to whom it is dedicated to… and the second, with more dirty implication, the addressee remains secret.

Let’s look at lyrics of “Your my best friend” once again – “girl” in text can be joke of a perverted sense of humor of John (oh, he can be witty!).

From the very beginning QUEEN moves among musical (artistic) gay circles, packed with “girls” of all shapes and sizes, Freddie could easily be called so long before the iconic video with tiddies’n’stocking. And female nicknames for his friends and band mates? Melina Mercury, Maggie May, Liz Taylor, Sharon John-Elton, Beryl Reid and Rod ‘Phyllis’ Stewart, Freddie’s former girlfriend, Mary Austin, became ‘Steve’ – except one.

John Deacon was considered too masculine (look at him again!). Is the reason his first child or remarkable features of his baby-making department? ))))

Another look to the text of #youremybestfriend Line about “I’m happy at home“, Roger was so against it, he didn’t want to sing this pop crap line as true rock star. Now it’s time for Deacon interview (1977), the most comfortable interview for John EVER: moving car, driving Roger, Bob Harris is familiar and friendly dude, cameraman is almost invisible at back seat and John frees himself. He stops choose words (it’s not exam this time, with journalists, flashes and bandmates), adds his countless ‘y’know’ and blurts out (stop and GO and WATCH THIS VIDEO).

At first QUEEN was job for him, he says in another interview – “I got a job”, and despite the guys treated him immediately as friendly as possible, but it take several years to really feel at home.

In a decade later, John will say “Lot’s of marriages don’t last as long as Queen have been together“. An interesting choice of words, because about the “secret” of his own long happy marriage he prosaically answers – “children“. So, the second song of John, created 1975 is not so simple and chaotic as we can think, right?

DEACON’S SONGS (part 4)

John, despite his youth and innocence, is smart and thanked Freddie in his manner. His second (only second!!!!!) song, created at summer of 75 “You’re my best friend” is not only about his wife. I had great suspicions even before carefully digging the information, and now it’s fully confirmed. The last piece I found recently. Deacon said about dedication this song to Veronica – “Half and half“. So, Freddie and Veronica. “Who was the most unforgettable person you ever met, and why? “I WOULD SAY FREDDIE.” – John, Spring 1996 : Official International Queen Fan Club

In a documentary about this song (hello, youtube), Brian says, in his opinion, Deacky wrote “You’re my best friend” to his “lovely lady”, but it is better to ask John himself, if he is in the good mood, you’ll take an answer”. Again, no discussion about meaning of the lyrics – ask the author! Besides, QUEEN didn’t like to explain to fans and music press that author wanted to tell. But if someone told (like Freddie), then 5 very different explanations. Trolls, good sir, perfect trolls.

But no one stood near John with a knife at his throat about YMBF song, he himself voluntarily and repeatedly hints it “likely/possible” in relation to his wife, never giving straight solid answers. I personally thinking a bit too hard at the line “I’ve been wandering ’round, But I still come back to you” – for the song about the woman he loves it is a strangest line EVER, but if song is divided into parts and we’ll think about evasive wording, you realize that it is addressed to Freddie Mercury (too).

What does John Deacon himself say about his writing process? “JD: I find it difficult to write songs. I usually start from the musical side. It’s not a very good way of working. It makes it difficult because I then have a melody and have to put words to it afterwards. But it just seems to be the way I go about it. I should sit down and write some words out first and then try to put music on it. It should be simpler that way. But I just tend to have more musical ideas that lyrical ideas. I also find it difficult getting my ideas across to the band when we attempt to play it” (let me remind you, John is not singing in any form, so he “showed” melody to colleagues with writing notes and playing instrumentally). What about sense? “JD: There is meant to be something in the words. Not so much in “Another One Bites the Dust”, but there’s meaning in my other songs. I try to put in a thought or two, a story or a meaning. The thing is we all write individually, so it’s mainly attributable to the personality of the character who has written the song. Certain songs don’t have a lot in them. They’re all different.“ Look at this man. He’s bloody smart, sensitive and emotional (but not in public, of course), can you imagine him just rhyme lines in the group where the songs were treated like children?

DEACON’S SONGS (part 4)

I stop cackling about early QUEEN GF’s and go back to Freddie and John. Fred must have seen the dynamics (at least at some points – Deacky was stealthy as F) of the relationship of his youngest (simple, traditional and straight relationship, even sudden child was perfectly NORMAL!), he was aware of Deacky’s decisions and difficulties that will cause marriage and fatherhood to not very rich John.

Times for QUEEN was difficult, despite 3 albums, future was fragile and unclear. But Freddie almost “pushes” John to Veronica, Phoebe writes (and it is his opinion, don’t forget~!) that his protectorate ended when Deacky found comfort/support in his wife. Mr. Mercury himself did not comment this fact at all, nor Queen’s personal life in general. @deakycheaky from Japan correctly say – for fans, and not just Japanese fans, Deacon’s marriage was a secret. Not as big as Freddie’s sex life, but a secret. Rock stars should be young, single and beautiful.

At that time (1974-75) Freddie was living deep in the closet, practically in Narnia. Nobody knows about his problems – not the press (of course!), neither parents or group. QUEEN band members though weren’t so stupid (as Brian tries to show at interview) and had some clues about actual course of events, but before his coming-out (for group!) at the end of 1975/ beginning of 1976 Fred was visibly nervous and asked for the help John Reed, gay too, but much more relaxed about it in general. And the confession itself was like “no one said anything, but everyone UNDERSTOOD, OKAY??”.

QUEEN agreed with everything – they loved Freddie as he is, so, he could sleep with anybody he wanted to, if he sings awesome after.

In fact, 18th January 1975 Fred is helping to give John that he can’t have himself – a wedding with beloved one in the church, surrounded by relatives (a little bit shocked but happy at the end), the possibility of a regular family and children.

In the memory of the Nigel remained only a crushed boa and a limo, and what conversations or even thoughts visited participants in those events, we can only guess (for god sake, Nigel, it was wedding of your best friend, strange and speedy wedding, and all you remember is a BOA? Freddie can make impression, huh). Later this year knocking out money for a proper house for The Deacons (in debt, BTW!) as well as a change record company can be interpreted as continuation of help (it is speculated that one of the reasons for the breakup with Trident, QUEEN first record label, was that they didn’t lend money to Deacon to buy house for newborn family). I will not make Fred cherubic – QUEEN needed money and fame, IMMEDIATELY, but in the list of necessities were a piano, drumsticks and a deposit for a house.
