Your voice was soft. Animated, bright like candlelight flickering against a rainy windowpane. You were rambling about something- something small and human, inconsequential by any world-changing standard- but Malleus had stopped listening approximately two minutes ago.

Not out of disinterest.

Quite the opposite.

He was too busy staring.

You were sitting on the edge of the stone bench in the Night Raven courtyard, legs swinging slightly, fingers gesturing as you spoke- telling him about a dream you had, or a cat you saw, or a class where someone sneezed so hard they fell off their chair- He couldn’t remember. He didn’t care.

Because your hair kept moving in the breeze. Because you smiled between your words like it was instinct. Because every expression you made was so lively. Your eyebrows dancing, your eyes narrowing dramatically when you were being sarcastic, your hands fluttering like the wings of a sleepy moth.

You laughed at your own story halfway through, pressing your knuckles to your mouth like you were trying to hold it in, and something in his chest clenched.

Adorable.

It echoed through his mind, again and again. You were adorable.

But not just in the aesthetic sense. Not in the way Lilia might tease, or Sebek might sputter over. This was something deeper. Something borderline destabilizing.

You looked up at him between sentences. “Are you even listening to me?”

He blinked.

Caught.

“…Of course,” he said, slowly. “You were discussing… the feline.”

“Which feline?”

“The, ah…” He paused. You raised an eyebrow. He confessed, voice sheepish in its nobility: “I may have… become distracted.”

Your head tilted. “By what?”

Malleus stared at you for a heartbeat too long. Then two. Then he looked away, just slightly. The stars behind him looked dimmer than the shine in his eyes.

“You,” he said simply. “I was distracted by you.”

You blinked.

He continued, tone soft, like he was offering you something sacred. “By your voice. By your smile. The way you move your hands when you speak. The crinkle in the corner of your eyes when you laugh.”

You blinked again. This time your cheeks warmed.

“I find it…” His gaze flicked back to you, like a spell had drawn it. “Very difficult to think clearly when you’re near.”

You were quiet for a beat.

Then you made the mistake of smiling.

That damned human smile.

His heart stuttered in his chest.

You reached out and nudged his arm gently. “You’re distracted again.”

“I know,” he said. His voice had gone low, almost reverent. “It is a most beautiful distraction.”

You tried to tease him then. Said something snarky, something silly.

But he wasn’t listening again.

Not because your words weren’t important. But because your nose scrunched when you laughed. Because your shoes didn’t match. Because you existed in this plane and had the audacity to look at him like that.

How utterly unfair.

He’d lived hundreds of years. He was a prince, and a mage, a descendent of Maleficent herself, wielding power that could shake nations with ease.  And now?

Now he was being absolutely defeated by the sight of you kicking your legs off a garden bench and smiling at your own jokes.

Good Seven, help him.

He was doomed.
