Rashaad's Interview in NY Screenwriting Life

In a chat with Janet Lawler of NY Screenwriting Life, Rashaad admits that "Acting is first, then directing, and finally writing" on his list of passions.  Of course, he adds "I have a lot to say, and the only way I have found that I can fully express it is by putting it on paper first."  He also goes over advice to writers, encouraging them to "Tell the stories in you heart that need to be told."  Good advice, Ra!

Harmony Santana wins Freedom Award at FilmOut Film Festival

The Freedom Award went to Harmony Santana for her performance in "Gun Hill Road" at San Diego's LGBT Film Festival, FilmOut.  Actor Esai Morales also won the festival award for Best Actor in a Feature Film.  "Gun Hill Road" and Rashaad Ernesto Green received the Audience Award for "Best First Narrative Feature".  Congratulations all!

Gun Hill Road on Hot Spot Magazine

Hot Spot Magazine says Harmony Santana's performance as Michael/Vanessa is "especially moving."  More praise comes for Judy Reyes' portrayal of Angela, which the article says "is extremely heart warming as a mother who will do anything to defend and protect her child."  Click here or the image for the entire article.

Esai Morales says Gun Hill Road is "different animal"

Esai Morales talks to Steve Rothaus' Gay South Florida of the Miami Herald and says that "Gun Hill Road" is a different animal than "La Mission", which was a film about a Latin father dealing with his gay son.  In GHR, the film addresses the transgender community where the physical aspect comes into play. Says Morales, "You can hide being gay. In Gun Hill you are taken into a world many find hard to reconcile. We really humanize the issue."

The National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts (NHFA) honored Rashaad Ernesto Green at their DC Gala last night with the Horizon Award.  Rashaad was a former scholarship recipient of the Foundation.  Congratulations!

Esai Morales in SF Says GHR Doesn't Need a Filter

In SF Weekly's interview with Esai Morales, Esai says unlike other major Hollywood films that try to tackle minority issues, "Gun Hill Road" does not have a traditional "Anglo" character to explain "to the rest of America what's going on."  Esai goes on to say that because the film is so genuine, raw, and universal, it doesn't matter if you're "straight, gay, Republican, Democrat, in between", you will find something to relate to in it.  It's universal because everyone has their issues with parents, regardless of background, and that is something that Gun Hill Road addresses with its effortless storytelling.  We're reminded of how real the issues in this film are when Esai says, "These aren't decisions people take lightly to go to school dressed as the opposite sex ­-- they could lose their life for it, and people have."  Esai stresses on the unique casting of a transgender actress in transition (Harmony Santana) in the role of Michael/Vanessa.  He adds, "This is a movie from our community for all communities to better understand and embrace our own children."  Check out the entire interview here.

Esai Morales and Harmony Santana Open up to Bay Times

San Francisco Bay Times takes on a Q&A with Esai Morales and Harmony Santana, delving into their process in becoming their roles, and how it's similar or different to who they were before the journey of the film began.  Esai admits that he went through his own transformation in the past as a result of the machismo sentiment often found in Latin culture.  Says Esai about Enrique, "I was him to some degree. I adopted an attitude people had about gay and trans people. This film is an act of retrogression in my own personal life.”  To him, his favorite scene is the one featured in the article, when the father and son duo watch TV side by side in the living room.  “They are so close and yet so far apart. That’s the beauty of this film. It doesn’t try to solve everything neatly.”

Esai Speaks About Giving Latinos a Voice in Film

MTV3 reports Esai Morales saying Latinos deserve more in Hollywood than the "Chasing Papi-type movie".  "Gun Hill Road" sets the bar apart and is a chance to give Latinos a voice on the big screen in a real drama that can grab anyone's attention, background aside.  Says Esai, "I was attracted to the unique nature of Gun Hill Road...[In this movie] my son isn't gay, my son rejects the body he was born with and that's beyond gay. It shows you what happens to a family with a father who's trying to redeem his life."

Congratulations to Gun Hill Road and Esai Morales for taking home the Best Feature and Best Actor for a Feature Film Awards at this year's Imagen Awards, respectively.  The Imagen awards are held annually to honor Latinos and Latino culture being positively represented in the previous year's film, television, and entertainment industry.  Good job to everyone!
