I was hoping I’d have some fanfic ready for Shinya’s birthday, but this semester is killing me, so have a sneak peek for something I’ve been working on. It’s a one-shot in which we see guren and shinya’s relationship through the eyes of the members of the squad, as well as their own. This is from Shinya’s bit.
/////
For Shinya, it starts when he’s ten, and for the first time in his life, he meets the girl he lives for.
In the following years, he will think back to this moment and wonder if she’d been cruel, not sparing him a second glance. He will wonder how his life would have been if she hadn’t been so cold, if instead of telling him I love another, she’d said I would like to know you.
But now, he’s just a ten-year-old child, standing in a cold gym, still feeling on his hands the blood of the last person he killed, and Mahiru Hiiragi’s icy stare just leaves his heart burning with the question, who is Guren Ichinose?
Guren Ichinose, he will find out six years later, is stubborn, and brave, and stupid, and compassionate, and kind, and infuriating, and beautiful, and will leave him burning for so many more years. Thinking back to it, Shinya should have ran the other way that first day, when Guren had stubbornly welcomed his attack, or when Guren had refused to defend his subordinates. Shinya should have ran before knowing the real Guren, the one who’d have done anything for the ones he loved. He should have ran long before he found out just how much Guren could set him afire.
But sixteen-year-old Shinya, who had spent the last six years wondering just who Guren Ichinose was, hadn’t ran, and now, four years later, twenty-year-old Shinya is standing at Guren’s door, holding a grocery bag, like it’s the most natural place for him to be.
Guren opens the door, an expression of feigned annoyance on his face.
“I brought food,” Shinya says as a way of greeting and Guren moves away from the doorstep, letting him through.
“Would it kill you to, I don’t know, let me know when you’re coming beforehand?” Guren asks, rolling his eyes.
Shinya shrugs. “The fact that you think I plan it in advance is so sweet, Guren,” he says, bringing a hand to his chest in a dramatic gesture. “No, it’s more like a spur of the moment decision, like, who can I go and annoy now? Oh, I know, Guren!”
Guren offers him another impressive eyeroll, but takes the grocery bag Shinya is offering before gesturing for him to follow him into the kitchen.
“Sayuri and Shigure are not around tonight.” Guren is looking into the bag, but he raises his eyes and looks at Shinya before continuing. “I’m assuming you knew that?”
Shinya imperceptibly shifts on his place, but answers with a smile still plastered on his face. “A little bird may have mentioned it. Thought you might want some company?”
Guren snorts, the shade of a smile appearing on his face, and something inside Shinya contracts pleasantly.
“Okay, fine, whatever. Help me set up some dinner.”

I’m not sure I’m ever going to be able to finish this, but maybe, if people are interested? Anyway, happy birthday son, I guess!
