no no no i’m not voting conservative! i don’t feel like a conservative! (i don’t know what that even means). NOT YET ANYWAY. but truth be told i could maybe see myself perhaps voting for them one day possibly. because, like, they aren’t a very conservative conservative party anyway. well economically yes they are, but socially they have become pretty liberal under dave. which is good. hopefully they will stay that way like i said before. i mean i have advocated for labour moving right and the conservatives moving left… meaning that they should basically end up in the same place eventually (AND MAYBE THEY HAVE ALREADY SCREAM THE UKIPPERS).
you know the ward i live in in slough is one of the very few here that usually returns a conservative councillor. in fact the only time i don’t recall that happening is a few years ago when tory/ukip vote split the right wing vote basically evenly down the middle allowing a labour councillor to sneak in. just one of the many benefits of our voting system! but yeah, you know what’s interesting? i voted the same way at this general election as i did back in 2010! meaning that i voted labour for mp and lib dem for local elections. but but but the difference is now… the lib dem potential councillor in my ward lost abysmally. just like the whole party did nationally. which makes me sad, because as i probably said in my diatribe before (which even i can’t be bothered to read) the lib dems used to be very active where i live and won often. oh well. welcome back to 2 party politics i guess.
i literally make nothing of russell brand. i haven’t even watched any of his videos apart from the snippets i have seen elsewhere. so yeah, i don’t think he made any difference to anything and i’m sure he is doing everything he does for attention rather than anything else. it might have been a mistake for ed miliband to show up with him, i dunno. i don’t think it made any difference really, he was going to get ridiculed in the likes of the sun no matter what he did.
talking of political revolutionaries though… i was disappointed to see people defacing war monuments in london at the weekend. i mean whatever you think of “tory scum” you aren’t going to win people around to your POV doing things like that. i know it would have been a small minority of people doing that stuff though. i wish more people would protest PEACEFULLY about more than just “tory cuts” (there would have also been “labour cuts”). like the snooper’s charter (CONCERNING NAME), the repeal of the human rights act (GEE IT SURE DOES SOUND BAD) and some of their other perhaps lesser know ideologically based policies. like wanting to go to “war” with the bbc and even potentially the revival of the privitisation of channel 4. which i would be very opposed to. the redrawing of constituencies is also something that people need to be vigilant about. i’m sure that the conservatives will try and squeeze as many of these things through parliament whilst labour are still in a sort of sense of shock and disarray and LEADERLESS. i hope we get some vocal opposition from labour people about the repealing of the human rights act. they introduced it! it’s discouraging that they don’t seem to want to defend it now.
oh yeah, i did hear about dan jarvis. i can kind of understand it. i know he said it was for family reasons but i also thought he might want some front bench experience first. hopefully he will be promoted by whoever eventually wins. like i said before, i would support tristram hunt out of the people left. but it seems as though chuka umunna is the front runner. probably because he keeps showing up on tv. and yeah, i dunno, i know a lot of people say there is something… sort of slippery about him and i kind of agree. he just seems too artificially well polished for my liking. and i don’t think he will win labour back support where they need it. P.S. THIS ISN’T RACIST.
whatever happens i think labour are in for a pretty big uphill struggle in 2020 (or whenever). i have been procrastinating about it and i think they are really going to be at pains to be the largest party let alone have a majority any time soon. i am less optimistic about their prospects then i would have been after the 2010 GE. for instance look at this. these are the seats labour would have to win back at the next election, and you can see after #20 or so the tories have pretty big leads over them. so it won’t be easy. and i don’t think they can count on more than a handful of scottish seats returning to them (scotland may be on the slow march to independence i reckon). even blair would have had some difficulty losing scotland (particularly in 2005). so they will have to win in new places. places where only blair has won before. places where i think labour will really struggle to regain trust over things like immigration whoever leads them.
the conservatives seem to have a few things in their favour too. i mean look! they won an election nobody thought they could whilst campaigning on more cuts and more austerity. assuming that there isn’t another big recession between now and the next GE (and there could be!) then they won’t have to campaign on cuts cuts cuts next time around (although they might still decide to). they might also have a sort of honeymoon period effect from having a new leader. even if that new leader is boris johnson! who i can’t really envisage as being pm at the moment (probably because his demeanour is a lot less serious and different to cameron’s), but i can’t see them choosing anyone else either. he certainly has the momentum behind him. i foresee that we could be in for a generation (however long that is) of tory rule. if general elections keep being held every 5 years that could mean labour out of power for a long time (a new centre left party might be needed eventually). and i feel fine. i’m not going to spend the next however long just whining about conservatives for the sake of it. LIKE REDDITORS LOVE TO DO FYI BTW.
i feel like we could go back to having a hung parliament next time around. the conservatives will struggle in that situation unless they are very close and can rely on the likes of the DUP/UUP or unless the lib dems make a shocking resurgence. and even if they do (they won’t) i can’t see them being at all willing to jump into bed with either the conservatives or labour after what happened last time. SO YEAH! IF YOU WERE FORCING ME TO BET ON THE NEXT GENERAL ELECTION OUTCOME NOW (PLS DON’T) I WOULD PROBABLY PLUMP FOR THE CONSERVATIVES BEING AT LEAST THE LARGEST PARTY AGAIN.
