while he seems to think criston did have feelings of adoration and affection for alicent, they were misplaced ones and he "cling" to her bc it was the only love he had while he wasn't in love with gwayne yet but was growing fond of him and if they were given the time and the right moment, they would have fallen in love and it would have been genuine, deep and working. him and i twinning with that vision!!

Gwayne is the beacon that Criston wanted to follow, Gwayne is the knight Criston wanted to be, Gwayne loved Criston as Alicent never did, or at least Gwayne never felt shame for it. But Criston never saw him.

Criston is a moth, who just wanted to share Alicent’s light. He is an insect under dragon’s feet, and he is trying to get out of the night, because there are no others like Alicent, except there are - and it is Gwayne, but he is too late, and Criston died and it all was right and it all was wrong.

this is the face of a man who wanted nothing to do with criston cole? who wanted him to die? who hated him and wanted him as far as possible?

at this point, to me, gwayne's implied homosexuality has served one specific purpose: to confirm that he indeed, fell in love with criston. it has no narrative relevance outside this and he has no other love interests. they could've had the exact same character without the purposely added layer of homosexuality if his feelings for criston were strictly platonic and more camaraderie-like.

this episode gave us a grieving gwayne whose reaction still displayed what he felt for criston despite the fact that he knew this man was dead from the moment he was forced to leave him behind. to be the first character being delivered the news of his death, to have his nephew expressing his condolences to him - it's not a coincidence to me and these were the kind of details that led me to predict their dynamic altogether.

ser criston cole, what an awfully tragic character. spent his life seeking love and validation from all these nobles and died being loved by one he could never have loved back.

gwaynston but it's a reciprocated love story where the idealization of alicent that resides within criston is slowly torn apart throughout the war and the experience of meeting gwayne. perhaps alicent is not his salvation but a glorified jailer, and perhaps her insufferable brat of a brother has been the only nobleman in his life that feels real and tangible. and gwayne is afraid, so afraid - that this beautiful man with such way with words only wants him for whatever resemblance he shares with his sister, but he's wrong. he is wanted, he is desired and loved because he is nothing like her.
