@Bahia Malaga, Colombia
Winter is coming
A local marimba school rehearsing in Juan Chaco. They were just as excited to have us as an audience as we were to be there experiencing their local beats.
Next stop: Bahia Malaga, Valle del Cauca
Arriving in Bahia Malaga requires taking a boat from Buenaventura or a private charter to the small military airport in Juan Chaco. We arrived by boat of course. Â Upon arriving we each took a moto-taxi to our hotel and went out for a walk. The simplicity and good pacific vibes of the people in this region is so palpable that I instantly fell in love. To some people this might come as a surprise, because at first glance when you arrive in Juan Chaco the first thing you see is the sea of trash on the beach shores and nothing seems âbeautifulâ about that. In my world, places donât only consist of its physical attributes but of the people, culture, and experiences you are able to partake in. Here, every smile is genuine, every beat of the drum and marimba is heartfelt, every bite of fish is fresh and flavorful, every conversation is meaningful, and every corner of nature is still somewhat untouched and refreshing. Itâs a region rich in biodiversity and mostly known for its humpback whale mating season. It is also a region rich in culture due to its mix of Afro and Indian communities. Even though at first glance once you arrive on the shores of Juan Chaco trash is what you may first see, Â itâs important to soak in the local spirit and attitude to see and explore beyond. The authenticity wonât disappoint.
We saw these adorably talented men sharing their talent on different benches of this same iconic street in Salento.

...and then there was still some hiking left by foot. Itâs totally worth it. People go through different trails, but expect to spend an entire day hiking up and making your way back down if you want to reach the best views.
Fastest way up if youâre short on time like we were, or if youâre just not physically apt for the treacherous hike, is by horse.Â
âValle del Cocoraâ and its fog forest. One moment the view is completely fogged, the next itâs clear. The sunsâ rays make their way through the changing openings through the clouds. Standing there for just a moment, itâs as though the same landscape changes in front of your eyes.Â
