What, like it’s hard?
Count the Cost
“I’m understanding more and more that simply helping people is extremely draining and unromantic, and not many of us count the cost of pouring out for others. There’s no Hollywood montage full of high fives and confetti. It’s usually dirty unappreciated work, sleeves rolled up, waist high with people who are rightfully scared, angry, lonely, and sometimes slipping.”

New nurses: It is natural to expect gratefulness for your service. Let that dream go.
Once in a while you will get a sweet and wonderful human being for a patient who will make you feel appreciated. But the vast majority of the time our job is thankless, and not only from the patients–from the providers, the administration, and even our fellow nurses.
The key is not to let someone else’s gratefulness be your motivation. Do your job to your personal high standards and remember that the people you are caring for are suffering. They may not have a lot to offer right now. Learn not to need them to offer you anything.
Times will come too when gratefulness turns into abuse and you need to stand up for yourself. Take this seriously, and act. Enduring true maltreatment does no good for you, your patients, other nurses, and for that matter your abuser.
Service is a holy thing, but it can drain you down to your core. Be mindful of the effect your job has on you.

So you’ve just started your new job as a new graduate nurse. You have a great preceptor, you like your unit, and your manager seems pretty cool. But you dread going to work. You get report and you’re already an hour behind. You’re already overwhelmed. There are so many things to do right this second that you shut down.
You can’t do this.
It’s too much.
You struggle through each day, just trying to get to the end of the shift. You are elated for days off. You dread going back. Is this really what you signed up for?
Will this EVER end?
Check out my blog post on how to practically deal with this situation because I’ve been there! Twice! Both as a new graduate and again as a new nurse in critical care.
Dinner for two with my bestie @cceleste07 👊😁 Cheers to a productive week!! 🍻 #winning #workhardplayhard (at P.F. Chang's China Bistro)
