hadriel: take a deep breath and go for a walk
hadriel: fresh air will be good and if you go out to the gardens, you can see the flowers there

mattie: not taking them hurts me i need them please please talk to the doctors they're wrong i know they are.
mattie: the side effects are ok if they make me better. they do please mr alexander i need them.
hadriel: You have to trust them, Mattie. Trust me, alright?
hadriel: If you're not feeling any better by the time I get back, I'll see what I can do, but at least give it a try for now. Can you do that?

mattie: they won't give me my medicine i feel really sick i need it or i'm gonna get really really ill please tell them to give it to me
hadriel: I think they were trying to make it so that you don't have to take it anymore. A lot of medicines can have side effects and you might find you feel better without it.

corey: michael misses your cookies so much.
hadriel: not bad. flight got in late last night so i'm still pretty exhausted.
hadriel: haven't seen will yet but i'm working on it
hadriel: aww tell him i promise i'll make him a whole batch when i get back, whatever kind he wants

“Fuck, Pastor? Really? But you’re hot.” Her cheeky smile turned to a scowl. “Like, really hot. That’s really not fair. Well, seeing you’re a man of God, all of the shit I want to do with you isn’t going to happen.”
Hadriel’s brows furrowed and a small frown appeared on his face at her reaction. Even with his naivety, he could put together two and two and figure out what she’d wanted. “Even if I wasn’t, that would be both illegal and morally corrupt, not to mention the fact that, even if you weren’t a student and you were of legal age, I don’t -- as the kids say -- swing your direction.”

“ it okay! my accent was very thick when i first moved here, it go away after practice! “ guanyu hoped that would reassure the others nerves about his voice. he laughed a bit as well, though it wasn’t has hearty as hadriel’s. when he admitted that he was a teacher, guanyu gasped and bowed deeply. “ i’m very sorry! i did not realize! “ peaking up at hadriel, he offered a shaky smile. “ i know where offices are! i am in miss penny’s office often! she help me with my english! “
“i think you’re doing real good, but i think mine might take longer to fade than yours. i’ve had a few years longer than you speaking like this, but i think i’ll be alright,” he assured the boy with a smile. “oh no, there’s no need to be sorry. you’re not the first person to make that mistake. apparently whatever beauty routine i’m using is working,” he said with a laugh. “she sounds great and it sounds like she’s doing a great job. i definitely appreciate the help because my sense of direction is horrible.”

“Well, lucky you ran into me then, I can rub off some of my skills onto you,” he offered with a smile. “109? That’s quite close to here, luckily for both of us, I’ll be sure you visit you often,” Caleb told the man with a grin and a playful wink. “What are you going to be teaching here?” He asked, noticing the man said office rather than dorm or class.
“I have to agree. I’d probably end up wandering around real lost for a while before I got anywhere,” he said with a laugh, surprise showing up on his face at the wink. “I’m a pastor and a counselor, so I think visiting might not be as fun as you think. Are you religious? Or will it just social visits?” Hadriel questioned, interest genuine.

“True, but then I could just stay inside and eat all day.”
“I’m fairly sure you can do that at Plath, can’t you?”

“Have you seen these cottages? With these and the buffet, I think I could live here forever!”
“I think you’d get real sick of the heat and the sand eventually.”

Everything was so new to him: the warm sand beneath his feet, the hot sun shining on his bare back. It was almost symbolic, how he had never been to a beach until now. Jonah’s hometown had been landlocked–no shorelines, no water as far as the eye could see. Perhaps now it was a metaphor, for how the invisible chains of his culture had loosened since coming to Plath.
Or maybe he was just confused by the beach as a concept.
“–Hey, quick question: do you like watersports?” At a pause, his bright grin faltered slightly. “Because I asked the woman beside me in the buffet line if she wanted to try them with me and she gave me a really weird look and walked away.”
The question surprised Hadriel -- mostly due to the fact that he was completely absorbed in watching the waves crash against the beach -- but nothing about it sounded odd to him. Truth be told, he wasn’t exactly a paragon of pop culture and he certainly didn’t know much about anything raunchy, both due to his childhood and the way he’d chosen to live. Not that he minded, but he supposed Plath would end up as a crash course for things like that.
“You mean jet skis and surfing and those types of things?” He questioned, southern drawl thick as he looked over at the blonde boy. “Can’t say I’ve ever done them, but they sound fun. Maybe she misheard you or something?”

“Isn’t this amazing?! I have never been to the beach ever before! Look at the sea, and all of the sand, and– and have you seen the flowers in the jungle? Most of them I’ve only seen them in books!”
“It’s incredible. I remember the first time I went to the beach, I couldn’t get over how big it was. It seems like it goes on forever, right?”
penny.
“ aren’t you younger than me? what are you doing with a boring night like that?. “ she let out a laugh, leaning her body against the wood frame. penny tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, before nodding and letting out another laugh. “ of course, i don’t mind that at all. i’ll probably only have one or two myself, i just need to unwind a bit. “ penelope closed her eyes and let out a loud sigh, before opening them again. “ for it only being tuesday, this week is exhausting. “
“only by a year! but i guess boring probably comes with the territory. there really ain’t many pastors that spend a lot of time at wild parties or anything like that,” he defended, though his smile never faded. he was always the quiet sort; he’d had more than enough excitement to last him a lifetime. “sounds great. definitely don’t feel restrained by me, but i think keeping it mellow might be the best choice. i can’t imagine teaching with a hangover would be easy.” not that he knew much about teaching or hangovers, but he could assume. “don’t i know that feeling. the kids here are fantastic, but dang if they don’t take it out of you sometimes.”
penny.
penelope lightly knocked on the door frame to the pastors office, peaking her head through the space. “ hey! i was wondering what your plans were for after classes are over today? im dying to get a drink, and no one else wants to go. “ penny took a step inside the room, but kept herself mostly in the door frame. “ not sure if you’re the drinking type but, it’ll be fun? take a break from the heavy atmosphere here? “

hadriel glanced up at the sound of the knock, giving a gentle smile as he saw her standing there. “i can’t say i have any plans other than heading home and maybe going to bed early, but that just makes me sound old now that i say it out loud,” he said with a laugh, shaking his head. “i’m not really the drinking type, you’re right, but going out could be fun. people are forever telling me i need to be less boring, so...sure, i’d love to. i’ll probably stick to non-alcoholic drinks though. i hope that’s not an issue?”
