I do NOT understand putting down other, especially new, fans and making enjoying things a competition… I happened to have read the book waaay before the movie came out but that doesn’t make me “better”. Why would it? Like. I can understand preferring the book to the movie, or preferring fan content that’s based on the book (even though in the case of phm I feel like the adaptation is really good) or whatever but why does getting into something earlier make others automatically worse? You read the book earlier bro, you didn’t write it yourself… where is this snobby pretentiousness coming from bro…

He literally started making it a competition and kept trying to put me down… I was sharing how excited I was about hearing Rocky would have a puppet and everyone and bro kept being like “heh… I got into it before the movie was announced…” okay? Do you want a medal? Congrats??? Like… I did read it earlier too and getting into it blind, not knowing about Rocky and getting that plot twist was an awesome experience nobody who watches the movie really gets but like…? That’s it. That’s literally it.

And look. I understand the appeal of small fandoms. I REALLY do. And I can understand that sometimes something you like becoming super popular is unpleasant. I also understand the need to be special but c’mon… this feels silly. We’re talking about a movie with aliens that’s literally about the power of friendship… it’s literally not that deep… let fandoms be fandoms.

You’re not some genius connoisseur for getting into a book by well acclaimed author Andy Weir, who’s already had one book made into a movie… you’re not even that niche 😭 that’s literally the author of “The Martian”.. you’re NOT niche.

I’m so tired of the “why do people hate aspecs, they aren’t doing anything?” argument. I know that it is an attempt to support us, but it fails so spectacularly to understand aromanticism, asexuality, and any other aspec identity that it’s actively frustrating.

We are doing something. We’re rejecting allonormative ideals and that’s a massive thing to do. We’re actively fighting not just to help other aspecs, but to help everyone, because amatonormativity (and allonormativity as a whole) hurt everyone. Single people who want to find a partner but can’t also deserve to be able to exist.

There are so many issues with the expectation of marriage, including:

A single income isn't enough to get by anymore

Having a spouse is almost necessary under the current medical system

Society shames and pressures people who are single to get into relationships constantly

Rejecting allonormativity means fighting against these things that hurt everyone.

So, no, aces and aros and other aspecs aren't "doing nothing." We're doing quite a lot.
