Riley and Angels fight in s4e20 the yoko factor is one of the best things btvs has ever done because it involves both Riley and Angel getting the shit beaten out of each other
A normal person: wow my girlfriend's mum is very sick and possibly dying and she just said to me that if she starts crying she'll never stop and she can't because she has to take care of her mum and little sister. I should probably do everything I can to support and help her
Riley Finn: so she can cry for her ex boyfriend and she can cry for her dying mum but she cannot cry for me...I obviously have to give her a reason to do that! I should leave her alone, and go around all reckless and make vampires bite me because I'm fucking stupid.
When I think about it, I think my favourite thing about Spike is that he does the work, you know? He's the only significant man in Buffy's life, let alone of her love interests, that actually takes a good, hard look at himself and decides that he needs to be better.
Angel, at least for the duration of his tenure on BtVS, doesn't change. He remains high-handed and paternalistic for the entirety of his relationship with Buffy, unilaterally making decisions 'for her own good' and ignoring what she, herself, wants. He makes the decisions. He doesn't accept when Buffy tries to. Literally. He does not accept her breaking up with him until it's time for him to break up with her.
Riley remains a misogynistic jerk who has an inferiority complex when it comes to his girlfriend. He also abdicates responsibility for his own damn actions when they all culminate in his life exploding in his face, and skips town without ever actually examining how he landed in that position. It's just Buffy's Fault, with no examination of his own culpability or thought processes.
Giles doubles down on his terrible decisions, especially in Season 6 onwards. He makes wrong call after wrong call, and gets offended when Buffy doesn't trust him anymore after he actively betrays her. Instead of doing anything to earn that trust back, he just fully turns on Buffy completely in Empty Places, and the fractures in their relationship are never addressed afterwards.
Less said about Xander, the happier I'll be. He starts the series as an entitled little shit and he ends the series not much better.
Hank abandons her. He just straight up peaces out and is never any help to Buffy, ever.
Spike, on the other hand, reaches his lowest point due to the implosion of his relationship with Buffy. In response, he realises that there's something he lacks, something he could do to be better, and then he does it. Not only does he do it--once it's done, he recognises that his feelings are his own problem and doesn't burden Buffy with them at all. He becomes a steady, nonjudgemental support when she needs it most, and asks nothing of her for it. He expresses his love with no anticipation of reciprocation, just states it as fact and explicitly states that he's not asking for anything in return. He just loves her. For her. He doesn't need her to love him back. Yeah, it would be nice, but that's not the point. He changes for and because of her. Loving her transforms him at a fundamental level, and he is a better person for it. None of that is a burden he places on Buffy.
Accountability is so attractive in a man. So is emotional vulnerability and passion, which is only something she really gets from Spike. The other men in her life are so wrapped up in themselves or their own need to be right/in control, and it actively harms her.
Yeah, Spike is physically very pretty; but it's his invisible qualities that make him as attractive as he is. There's a reason he's so beloved while other characters have a more mixed (or even negative) reception, and it has very little to do with the cheekbones.

I can’t stop replaying the moment he saved her so here’s a sketch inspired by it.

vampire sex would fix me i think
I think the thing about both Zuko and Toph (and this will likely end up a longer post at some point) is that they work together so well in a way that makes sense both for the continuation of the characters and the story. Both of them are not the type to settle down right away...I think they both need time to figure out what life is like beyond the scope of war. How to live their lives and who exactly they want to be. It gives them a chance to both grown up and figure out who they are apart before they get together (which also helps with evening out their ages and life experience). I think the idea of pairing off the Gaang makes a lot of sense (the six of them went through something so incredibly unique that's it hard to find others to share it with, and I like the idea of them all being this sort of huge interconnected family) and Toph and Zuko have this separate level of connection that goes beyond what I think the others can understand. The whole idea of abusive family is something that connects them in ways the others can't really understand, as is the idea of reshaping yourself and finding out who you are. They also probably both deal with insecurities and doubting love and also neither of them have home in the way the others do. The idea of them meeting again as adults and finding in each other the love and family they both so desperately wanted as children is just so beautiful.
Anyway I'm on day 5 of this new ship and I've written like five fics. I seriously can't get these two out of my head. Send help 🙈

Happy birthday to me!!!!
These are gifts from a very dear friend of mine
it would be so ironic if lin was zuko's and toph kept it a secret as she wanted to ensure her freedom.
bc zuko seemed to be the best and the most present parent amongst gaang and had they been a couple, lin would have had a more involved parent and perhaps wouldn't have suffered so much for toph's attention.
i doubt that toph would have been willing to be a "royal lady" and take up spousal duties. she was definitely dedicated to her work with aang in republic city, so it's understandable why she would choose an easy way out.
but imo, zuko is the type who would have just taken up the pressure from his court and scandal onto himself and let toph live her life as she pleased, lol. but maybe toph knew it and wasn't selfish enough to burden him so much.
You're all on Zutara meanwhile I'm over here (🎶that's me in the corner🎶) with Zutoph crumbs.
I love them and I need you to look at them...
y'all, c'mon!
toph casually throwing a name "kanto" should not mean much... her relationship with lin was stained bc of her refusal to reveal the father's identity. she kept him a secret for 50+ years at the cost of their relationship but then randomly said that he was some regular nice guy and we are not supposed to question it?
i love it that toph was not a good mom. but she was a good person and she would not disregard lin's feelings like that if she didn't believe the revelation would uproot their lives.
first and foremost, toph wanted freedom for herself and for lin. but she also had a sense of responsibility. zuko being the father makes sense bc once revealed, that would mean they had to take a royal responsibility and lose their freedom, so toph simply refused to claim that "right."
