uh i read some people saying that solangelo is like problematic b/c of the medic stuff and like i was wondering what you thought about that?

well first and foremost theyre fictional characters so real life stuff doesn't apply to them.

The power dynamics of doctor & patient are always going to be a little skewed in fantasy.

Secondly - the severity of power dynamic between Will and Nico in terms of doctor/patient varies heavily depending on what book we're looking at. In TOA it's practically nonexistent. Will helps Nico manage his symptoms, and does joke about being his doctor, but Will is not Nico's sole medical practitioner. They are peers and Nico still has full agency over himself and his medical decisions. If anything, Will uses his medical influence at Nico's explicit request to achieve specific goals Nico is seeking for improving his comfort in given situations (such as being able to sit at the Apollo cabin's table). Nico is fully able to reject Will's recommendations or challenge them and there are other medical practitioners (Chiron, the satyrs, and Dionysus for therapy specifically) at CHB that Nico has access to and utilizes besides Will. This is pretty explicitly expressed in TOA because of this exact idea that there might be a power imbalance between them from Will (sometimes) being Nico's doctor (primarily a concern raised from fanon reaction to BoO between series), but it's clear their dynamic is more "I am dating a doctor (who is not my primary physician) and because they are a doctor they sometimes give me advice based on their knowledge and help me manage my symptoms and supports me the same way any partner would/I am dating a disabled individual and happen to have knowledge about medical things and help them to the best of my ability but I do not control their life/medical decisions."

In TSATS this is walked back a bit. TSATS kind of limits the influences of other people in Nico's life and Will is framed more as both his boyfriend and primary medical personnel/caretaker who has very strong influence over Nico's life and whom Nico tends to bend to the whims of. Nico in general is kind of framed as a doormat in TSATS and functionally helpless on his own without Will taking care of him/guiding him. I would phrase this as a more toxic interpretation of solangelo, because shipping isn't always about things you would support in real life or emulating healthy dynamics. Shipping is mashing dolls together to see what happens. What dynamics you want to explore in mashing said dolls together is up to you. Some people want to explore different dynamics than others because they think the way the characters would act under those circumstances/in those scenarios is compelling, because that's what fiction is about. For other people they find other scenarios more compelling. To each their own.

Regardless, "problematic" in the fandom sense is an awkward perimeter to examine any riordanverse character or character dynamic under, because said characters and dynamics fluctuate so heavily between books (and especially series) or such due to Rick's inconsistency. Including but not limited to literally having different physical characteristics, like age or physical appearance or tattoos or whatever. Fandom is all about picking and choosing from canon in the first place, so when you're picking and choosing from something broad and internally inconsistent it's kind of ridiculous to even try arguing over it in the first place. You're just going to end up going in circles.

Also, like. Will is 14 in TOA. I don't think he's taken the Hippocratic oath. He can't make legally binding agreements on his own. He's not a real doctor. Also his boyfriend is literally the judge and final vote of everyone's souls and king of ghosts and can one-shot instakill people. Like. Nico's not helpless. And if there's a power imbalance it might actually be in the other direction on account of the fact that technically Nico Is The Lord Of Everyone's Literal Souls. It's a little less doctor/patient and more king/subject practically speaking.

suddenly remembered that pjotwt incident where show fans dogged on latinopercy's fanart of latino percy to "defend" walker and one of the comments said that the piece didn't feel like percy because he looked "too angry" and . [insert plethora of generational curses here] now it has me thinking about surreptitious fandom racism in how people seem to be receiving and interpreting show percy (a blond, blue-eyed pale kid) vs book percy (who's commonly depicted as a darker-skinned boy of color)

show percy being seen as the ideal percy because he fits the white vision of a beach boy, which he never was in the first place, instead of the considerably more alternative, rough-looking skater city boy he was in the books. the massive erasure of how teachers instantly distrust percy and never think he'll amount to anything because of how his disability others him; the lighthearted twist on percy's home situation so that we don't feel the total gravity of the situation that gabe puts both percy and sally in; the glossing over of how gabe and authority figures are easily able to label percy as a terrorist because he's a poor runaway kid, and percy is in turn severely traumatized by them (just look at his internal narration when he meets mr. d); show percy being to one to know and narrate everything about greek mythology instead of annabeth; show percy being first and foremost a lovable golden retriever goof and to-be-boyfriend; show fans wanting percy to be openly pursuant and communicative about his feelings with annabeth from the get-go, perceiving botl and tlo percy as an asshole for daring to be interested in other girls because it doesn't fit in with the golden retriever bf archetype they want him to be.

show percy is not tangibly othered in the way that book percy made us feel that he is and therefore carries no impact preceding from that; percy with none of the melancholy and the rage and the tragedy that haunts him from the first book because of his mother's death (because, remember, he knows from episode 2? 3? that sally is alive in the underworld). to the show and its fans, percy's coding in the books as a minority (even if unintentional on rick's part) is inconsequential to his character; and it seems they like him that way. otherwise, he's too angry, too complicated, too much of an asshole for the extremely stunted extent of their moral palette.
