ππππππ β¦ "because i want to."
Summary
You never meant to fall for Woojin. It starts with small things the way he remembers your favourite drink, notices when you're tired, and always seems to find a reason to sit beside you. Somewhere between late night conversations, quiet walks home, and sharing an umbrella in the rain, friendship begins to feel like something more. But when Woojin finally admits he's liked you for a while, you realise maybe the feelings you've been trying to ignore aren't one sided after all. βWhy?β He smiled softly. βBecause I want to.β
pairing: Woojin Γ reader genre: fluff, slow burn, comfort, romance setting: college / modern AU wc: 1.5k
β§-----------------------------------------------------------------------------β
You didn't mean to fall for Woojin.
That was the problem.
It would've been easier if he'd been arrogant. Or annoying. Or the kind of person who made it obvious from the beginning that getting attached to him was a terrible idea.
Instead, Woojin was quiet.
Soft-spoken.
The kind of person who remembered the smallest things you'd said weeks ago.
Like how you hated the sound of rain against your bedroom window because it kept you awake.
Or how you always picked the strawberry flavoured drink even though you'd once complained that it was too sweet.
Or how you pretended you weren't tired whenever you were around everyone else.
"You didn't sleep again, did you?"
You looked up from your phone.
Woojin was standing in front of you, holding two drinks.
"I slept."
He raised an eyebrow.
"For how long?"
You hesitated.
"...Three hours."
"That's not sleeping."
"It counts."
"It really doesn't."
He sat down beside you, handing you the drink you'd always ordered.
You stared at it.
"You remembered?"
He looked confused.
"Of course I remembered."
Something about the way he said it made your chest ache.
Like remembering you was the easiest thing in the world.
You looked away before he could notice the smile creeping onto your face.
"Thanks."
"You're welcome."
For a while, neither of you spoke.
The room was filled with the quiet sound of people talking around you, chairs scraping against the floor, music playing faintly through someone's headphones.
You rested your head against the wall.
Then, without thinking, you let your eyes drift toward him.
He was already looking at you.
You froze.
Woojin blinked.
You blinked back.
Neither of you looked away.
"What?" you whispered.
"Nothing."
"You're staring."
"So are you."
"I was looking."
"Same thing."
You rolled your eyes.
"You're annoying."
He smiled.
"And yet you keep sitting next to me."
Your heart skipped.
You hated that he noticed everything.
Especially that.
It was raining when you left.
Of course it was.
You stood underneath the building's awning, staring at the sheets of water pouring onto the pavement.
"You don't have an umbrella?"
You turned around.
Woojin.
"No."
He held his umbrella up.
"Come on."
"I can walk."
"In the rain?"
"Yes."
"You'll get soaked."
"I'll survive."
He laughed quietly.
Then he stepped closer and tilted the umbrella toward you.
"Just come with me."
You stared at him.
"Where?"
"Home."
Your stomach fluttered.
"You're walking me home?"
"Unless you'd prefer swimming."
You laughed.
"Fine."
You stepped underneath the umbrella.
It was smaller than you expected.
Your shoulders brushed.
Then your arms.
Neither of you moved away.
The walk was strangely quiet.
Not awkward.
Just...comfortable.
You watched the rain fall beyond the edge of the umbrella.
Woojin kept adjusting it so that more of it covered you.
Eventually, you noticed.
"You're getting wet."
"I'm fine."
"Your shoulder is soaked."
He shrugged.
"So?"
"So move the umbrella."
"I'm keeping you dry."
You looked at him.
"Why?"
He glanced down at you.
For a second, he didn't answer.
Then he smiled.
"Because I want to."
And somehow, that answer felt more dangerous than anything else he could've said.
When you reached your house, you stood beneath the porch light.
"Thanks."
Woojin nodded.
"Get inside safely."
You smiled.
He started walking away.
"Woojin."
He stopped.
You weren't sure why you'd called him.
You just knew you didn't want him to leave yet.
He turned around.
"Yeah?"
You swallowed.
"Do you...do you like me?"
The question escaped before you could stop it.
His expression changed.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
He looked down at the ground, smiling to himself.
Then he walked back toward you.
"Do you want the honest answer?"
You nodded.
"Yeah."
He stopped in front of you.
"I think I've liked you for a while."
Your heart pounded.
"How long?"
He laughed softly.
"Long enough that everyone else figured it out before you did."
You covered your face.
"Oh my god."
He laughed.
"What?"
"That's embarrassing."
"It's cute."
You lowered your hands.
"You're not supposed to say that."
"Why?"
"Because now I'm going to be nervous."
He smiled.
"You don't have to be."
"Why?"
"Because I like you."
He said it so simply.
Like it wasn't terrifying.
Like it wasn't the thing you'd secretly wanted to hear for months.
Your eyes softened.
"I like you too."
His smile grew.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
There was a pause.
Then he held out his hand.
You looked at it.
"What's this?"
"Come here."
You slipped your hand into his.
His fingers curled gently around yours.
And suddenly, the rain didn't seem so bad anymore.

β§-----------------------------------------------------------------------------β
You hadn't meant to stay this late.
That was what you'd told yourself an hour ago.
Then half an hour ago.
And somehow, you were still sitting on the cold studio floor with your back against the mirror, watching the city lights flicker through the windows.
Everyone else had already left.
The music had stopped a long time ago, but you could still hear it in your head.
Your phone was at 12%.
Your legs hurt.
Your hair was a mess.
And, honestly, you just didn't want to go home yet.
The studio door creaked open.
You looked up.
Ryul stood in the doorway, one hand still resting on the handle.
He looked just as tired as you felt, hoodie pulled over his head, hair falling messily over his forehead, a water bottle hanging loosely from his fingers.
His eyes found yours immediately.
"Youβre still here?"
You gave him a tired smile.
"So are you."
He looked around the empty studio.
"TouchΓ©."
He walked over and sat down beside you, leaving barely an inch between your shoulders.
Neither of you spoke.
It wasn't uncomfortable.
It never was with him.
That's what scared you.
You could sit beside Ryul for hours without saying a word and somehow feel more understood than you did after talking to someone for days.
He glanced at your phone.
"12%."
You looked down.
"Oh."
"You waiting for someone?"
"No."
"Then why haven't you gone home?"
You shrugged.
"Didn't feel like it."
He nodded slowly.
"Me neither."
You turned your head toward him.
"You could've gone home."
"So could you."
You smiled faintly.
"Guess we're both stupid."
"Probably."
A quiet laugh escaped you.
Ryul smiled when he heard it.
Then his expression softened.
"You've been quiet lately."
Your smile disappeared.
"I'm always quiet."
"Not like this."
You looked away.
There were a hundred things you could've said.
I'm tired.
I'm stressed.
I'm fine.
You picked the easiest one.
"I'm fine."
Ryul didn't answer.
You glanced at him.
He was staring at you.
Not in an uncomfortable way.
Like he was trying to figure out which parts of you were real and which parts you were putting on for everyone else.
"You always say that."
"What?"
"'I'm fine.'"
You swallowed.
"Because I am."
He looked down at his hands.
"You don't have to be."
Something about those five words made your chest tighten.
You looked away before he could see it.
"I don't know how to explain it."
"You don't have to."
"I feel like I should."
"You don't."
He leaned his head against the mirror.
"You can just sit here."
Your eyes burned slightly.
"You'd really sit here with me?"
He looked at you like the answer should've been obvious.
"Yeah."
"Even if I don't talk?"
"Especially then."
You laughed quietly, but it came out shakier than you'd intended.
Ryul noticed.
Of course he did.
He always noticed.
He reached over and gently took your hand.
You froze.
His thumb brushed over your knuckles once.
"You don't have to pretend around me."
You stared at your hands.
"I don't know how not to."
"Then don't try."
Your eyes met his.
For a moment, neither of you moved.
There was something different in his expression.
Something you couldn't quite name.
"Ryul..."
"Hm?"
"Why do you care so much?"
He went quiet.
You almost wished you hadn't asked.
Then he looked down at your hand in his.
"Because..."
He hesitated.
"Because I notice you."
Your heart skipped.
"What?"
"I notice when you stop laughing."
You couldn't breathe.
"I notice when you say you're okay but don't look okay."
His voice was quieter now.
"I notice when you leave early. When you don't eat. When you're pretending to listen because you're actually somewhere else in your head."
You stared at him.
"I notice everything."
Your eyes stung.
"Why?"
He gave a nervous little laugh.
"You're really making me say it?"
You shook your head.
"I just... don't understand."
He looked at you for a long moment.
Then he whispered,
"Because I like you."
Everything went still.
The air.
The room.
Your thoughts.
Even your heartbeat felt too loud.
Ryul looked away almost immediately.
"I wasn't going to tell you."
"Why?"
"Because I didn't want to ruin this."
"This?"
He gestured vaguely between you.
"Us."
You looked down at your intertwined hands.
"You thought you'd ruin it?"
"I thought you'd get uncomfortable."
You squeezed his hand.
"I wouldn't."
He looked at you.
"How do you know?"
"Because..."
You took a breath.
"...I like you too."
His eyes widened.
"You do?"
You smiled through the tears that had finally slipped down your cheeks.
"Yeah."
He stared at you for a second before letting out a breathy laugh.
"You're crying."
You wiped your cheek quickly.
"I'm not."
"You literally are."
"Shut up."
He laughed.
Then, carefully, he lifted his hand and wiped the tear from your cheek with his thumb.
His touch was so gentle it almost hurt.
"You know," he whispered, "I've wanted to do that for a while."
Your heart fluttered.
"Do what?"
He smiled.
"Take care of you."
You looked at him.
And suddenly, you understood.
It wasn't some grand confession.
It wasn't flowers or perfect words or a movie like moment.
It was this.
An empty studio.
Two tired people.
His hand holding yours.
And the quiet realization that maybe you'd been looking for somewhere to belong when he'd been sitting beside you the entire time.
Ryul rested his head against your shoulder.
You leaned yours against his.
"Can we stay a little longer?" he murmured.
You smiled.
"Yeah."
His fingers tightened around yours.
"Good."
You closed your eyes.
For the first time in a while, you didn't feel like you needed to leave.
You didn't need to explain yourself.
You didn't need to pretend.
You could just stay.
And maybe..
just maybe..
that was what falling in love was supposed to feel like.

β§-----------------------------------------------------------------------------β
The rain had started before practice ended.
By the time everyone spilled out of the studio, laughing and complaining about the weather, the streets were shimmering beneath the streetlights.
You stood under the awning, hugging your jacket closer.
"Forgot your umbrella?" someone teased.
You laughed awkwardly. "Yeah..."
One by one everyone disappeared into waiting cars or under shared umbrellas until it was just you.
And him.
Ohyul stepped out a few minutes later, headphones around his neck, hoodie sleeves pulled over his hands. He stopped when he saw you.
"...You're still here?"
"I was hoping it'd stop raining."
He looked up at the sky.
"It won't."
"...Yeah."
Silence settled between you.
Not awkward.
Just...quiet.
The kind that somehow only existed around him.
Without saying anything, he opened the black umbrella he'd been carrying.
"You coming?"
You blinked.
"Huh?"
He tilted the umbrella toward you.
"I'll walk you."
Your heart betrayed you immediately.
"Oh... you don't have to."
"I know."
"..."
"...But I want to."
The walk home wasn't long.
The streets smelled like fresh rain and the occasional passing bus sprayed tiny droplets onto the pavement.
You tried your hardest not to notice how close you were standing.
Or how every time the umbrella shifted, his shoulder brushed yours.
"So..." you mumbled.
"So."
"You're not very talkative."
He glanced at you.
"I am."
"...Really?"
"Just not with everyone."
"Oh."
"..."
"...You're different."
You looked up.
"What does that mean?"
He paused for a second.
"It means..."
His ears turned slightly pink.
"...I don't mind the silence with you."
Your chest tightened.
Neither of you spoke after that.
There wasn't a need to.
When you finally reached your apartment building, the rain had softened into a light drizzle.
You stepped out from under the umbrella.
"Thanks."
"Mhm."
You smiled.
"I'll see you tomorrow?"
He nodded.
"Probably."
You laughed.
"'Probably?'"
"I'll definitely be there."
"There you go."
You turned toward the entrance before hearing your name.
When you looked back, he was still standing there.
"I almost forgot."
"Hm?"
He reached into the pocket of his hoodie and pulled out the tiny keychain you'd been searching for all week.
Your eyes widened.
"You found it?"
"It fell out of your bag."
"You had it this whole time?"
"I was waiting."
"...Waiting?"
"So I'd have an excuse to see you."
For the first time since you'd met him
Ohyul smiled first.
Small.
Shy.
The kind of smile that looked like it wasn't shown to many people.
"I figured..."
"...you'd come looking for me."
And somehow
The rain didn't feel cold anymore.
