sydney sweeney | she/her | cisfemale | hey, you know haley burton? iâm pretty sure theyâre 23 and have lived here for 23 years. they spend most of their time at the fountain but also go to the beach a lot. if you ask me, they can be amiable, but also superficial at times. if you want to get on their good side, give them a sunflower next time you see them! | kirby, 23, she/her, cst
friends: emily burton (begrudgingly), alex mullner, libby wyler, abigail knox (ex girlfriend)
âiâm feeling an urge to go shopping. ugh! i wish there was a mall around here.â
haley is the second born child in the burton family, following her sibling emily by a few years. the burtons were wealthy couple; their homey, comfortable residence in pelican town wasnât due to a lack of funds, it was just because they loved the town and wanted their kids to grow up in that welcoming environment
that didnât stop them from traveling all over with their daughters, though! haley and emily did a lot of exploring around with their parents as they were growing up, and always got whatever their little hearts desired. haley definitely grew up spoiled; trips to the mall were frequent any time her sights were set on getting something. her adoration for photography was born from this very pattern; her parents assumed itâd be a phase she grew out of within weeks, as most things she set her sights on were, but she grew attached to the disposable camera they bought her and continued using up all the film on them until her parents bought her a proper camera. sheâs since upgraded multiple times, but her trusty old first camera is still on display proudly in her bedroom.
growing up, haley befriended alex mullner, another pelican town local that was the same age as her, and they were fast friends. he was the only person that could handle her, so to speak - he either didnât take her shit or just let it roll off her back. they were truly a match made in heaven, and that much was evident to the both of them the older they got. so much so that they decided to start dating in high school. things were great for a while, haley was happy, but all things that glitter are not gold.
as their relationship progressed, it started feeling worse and worse. alex was happy - he was planning their future, molding his life around the idea of marrying her and having kids together in the future. to him, everything was perfect between them. haley was less sure, and couldnât put her finger on exactly why for a long time. but a while after graduating high school and settling into her adult life, so to speak, it hit her. she was a lesbian. and as much as she loved alex, she didnât love him in the way he needed her to and the way she so desperately wanted to.
it was hard, but she came out and they broke up. it put a slight strain on their friendship, for sure, but like with everything, they got past it and have resumed their inseparable friendship since. heâs still her favorite person in the world, in spite of their past.
since, haley has come out publicly and is no longer ashamed or worried about what people think. itâs part of her, and if anyone has an issue with it, thatâs on them, not her. sheâs fallen right back into her typical girly, snooty, ostentatious personality. a few years back, she and emilyâs parents left pelican town to travel the world independently, leaving the house to the girls. haley adores the extra freedom and the allowances they send the kids every week. sheâs attached to her camera and attached to her clothes, and sheâs not afraid to judge your choice in such. saying sheâs an acquired taste is an understatement tbh.

Emily squealed at the mention of ghosts from their sisterâs oh-so familiar voice. âNo, no, silly. Ghosts wouldnât be that responsive at this time of day. Donât you know this by now?â They glanced to their sibling and gave a wink, then looked back to the flower. Their plucking ritual continued on, but a new sense of calm washed over them at Haleyâs presence. Sure, they were together most of the time, but it didnât change the familiarity she brought that eased Emilyâs mind at any point. Unless they were having a particularly rough bicker⊠then maybe Haleyâs presence wasnât so calming.Â
Finally the fresh orange flower was plucked from its resting spot and joined the chorus of colors already in the bouquet. âThis was a nice way to spend my day, huh?â Haleyâs compliment meant a lot, because Emily did need to take time for themselves. Usually the routine they followed was work, cleaning, grocery shopping, aerobics, and sewing â so flower picking was rather refreshing. Even better, this would set them up to be able to press flowers all week â art, clothes, dyes â they could keep busy for a while with this bunch of flowers. At the invitation Emily quickly gathered up the flowers and stood.Â
Joining their sister, they smiled brightly and chimed, âas long as we keep them safe, Iâm down. There might be some blooms at the wishing well, too.â Thinking for a moment, they added, âAnd I could always use some new pictures of my clothes. Sandyâs been asking to see more of them.â A smile was plastered to Emâs face as she began the way to the well. âHave you thought about coming out to the graves at night and taking pictures, though? I mean⊠if you play with the exposure and stuff you could see⊠yâknow, stuff from the other world.â It was an honest suggestion, an idea that had crossed their mind several times already. If it werenât for the pure respect for Haley and her things, Emily would have already grabbed the camera and done the investigating themselves.Â
...
Emily was... a colorful character, perhaps. Haley would be the first one in line to volunteer that information up. She made fun of them for it pretty often - always rolling her eyes or scoffing under her breath at some of the more interesting things her sibling would throw her way. The casual suggestion of ghosts lingering around the graveyard was one of those things. Haley rolled her eyes, despite the smile that tugged at the corners of her mouth. As silly as she found Emily at times, the love she felt for her was insurmountable. If anyone else dared to mock them for their apparent understanding of the local ghosts and their schedule, thereâd be an issue.
âHm, I donât normally associate with the ghosts here, but Iâm glad for the update.â Really, Haley didnât not believe in ghosts. Emily was a goof at times, but with how close they lived to the cemetery and how many ancient bones were buried under their feet, she couldnât not be a little superstitious. But she simply chose to act like she didnât believe in any of it. That was all she could do to soothe the nerves that accompanied living so close to the graveyard. In spite of her teasing, though, it was really nice seeing Emily enjoying their free time. As perky and excitable of a person as they always were, they worked themselves to the bone most of the time. Laying in the grass and picking flowers to pass the time suited her, really.
âWe wonât squash them, donât worry. I think itâd look really pretty if we got some shots of you in the grass with them all around you. Really serene, you know?â Haley was visualizing all her ideas as they walked, a bit zoned out in deep consideration. The wishing well was really a gorgeous spot, and sheâd found that Emily was a very good subject for photoshoot. It would be a piece of cake and a generally nice time together. âOh Sandy wants to see some more pictures?â She playfully bumped her shoulder into theirs as they walked, wiggling her eyebrows in a suggestive manner. âMhm, Iâm sure she does.â But she let out a self-amused giggle at herself.
âNuh-uh, Em, you are not gonna trick me into going out there and getting possessed or something. No chance.â Haley shook her head steadfastly, blond hair whipping with the motion. But she paused in thought for a moment. âOkay, maybe if you promise to do my share of the chores for two weeks. And we do a sage burn, like, immediately after. And sprinkle salt on the doorways and window sills. All that stuff. Only then, though! Iâm not into messing around with spirits!â
"All of it was pretty hard, if I'm being real. It sucked ass. But the worst part was breaking up with Alex. He's been my best friend since, like... always, and I wanted to marry him someday. Having to come to terms with the fact that I didn't love him that way and having to tell him that was nearly impossible for me to deal with. We're all good now, he's still my best friend and my soulmate, but it was really rough."
Abby crossed her legs on the floor and stuck the pricing gun to her forehead *click* It had slowed down long enough for her to get some stocking done. With her father meeting with a new supplier and her mother getting a chance to meet friends in town, Abby was left to run the store on her own. Of course she had done it before, but she hated when no one was there. No one to talk to, no one to distract her, no one to keep her mind from wondering what else there is in life. âuuugghhhâ Abby groaned to the canned vegetables, folding flat to the floor. Closing her eyes, she let her thoughts wander about what she would be doing if she was off at college instead of the floor of the dry goods aisle. Coming back to the land of the here and now, Abby opened her eyes back up to a figure that she hadnât heard enter. âFuckâ she shot up to a sitting position âwhere did you come from?â
...
Haley didnât frequent the general shop - at least not the front of it. Just a few years back, sheâd spent much of her free time upstairs with the youngest employee at the shop. The front of the store, though? She usually just asked Emily, Alex, or Libby to grab her things when they made trips, or she took advantage of JojaMartâs delivery service if no one was available to wait on her hand and foot. But today, there was a backlog on delivery, Emily was at work, and Alex and Libby had the audacity to do something that Haley had no interest in. Pierreâs it was, then. The silver lining was that she at least had the potential to see Abby there. And she did... laying flat on the floor. âYour wildest dreams,â Haley replied decidedly, leaning against the shelf as she gazed down at her ex-girlfriend on the floor. âYou know how nasty the floor is, right? I know you half-ass mopping, so youâre laying in an unholy amount of mud and gunk right now. Was it worth the dramatics, Abs?â
With hands tucked into the pockets their sundress Emily circled around the fountain, hair a calculated mess and fingers brushing the gems brought along for todayâs adventure. Days away from the saloon were rare â in fact, they practically lived there; so much so that days off were a complete perplexed haze for the barmaid. Pelican Town was their home, theyâve explored what they care to explore, know the places read: people to avoid. Now though? Now they were just killing time, letting the day lead them to wherever, because in the end⊠thatâs where they were supposed to be. Pacing turned into wandering, making the familiar trek from the fountain, around town, and eventually leading to the graveyard.Â
âHm. Reflection is needed today â not another day to wither away under the sun.â The villager picked a familiar family headstone, pressed against the back, and then slid down to sit. âAh, I didnât bring a journal⊠how do I reflect without a journal?â The question bounced around their head, repeating as brown hues traced the landscape in front of them. Eventually the weeds from the dirt started pouring new stories of life from loss, and the flowers started speaking in a familiar hum of ethereal storytelling. Daisies, lilacs, babyâs breath, and sweet peas chirped in the wind, telling her a thousand different stories. Once a tell was finished, they gave a small âthank youâ before plucking it from the ground, examining it, and then grouping it with the growing bouquet in their hand.Â
Emily, caught up in florals, didnât notice the time passing, or the people passing. They were focused and inspired. âThese lilacs could make amazing prints on fabric,â they mused under their breath, now aiming to find more colorful flowers to make even more amazing prints. Suddenly green hues locked in on an orange chrysanthemum â an immaculate pair to the light purples coveted in their left hand. âOh!â The shout led to action, careless action, as they bolted forward to admire the flower; not aware of surroundings.Â
It was a really, really nice day, finally. Haley hated the winter. Everything outside was dead and stiff, the usually green and flowery grass was coated in a blanket of snow, the water was still or even frozen at times. It was lame, and she kept to the warmth of her bedroom and much as she possibly could to avoid it. It hadnât fully warmed up outside just yet - Haley still had to unfortunately wear pants instead of her favored skirts and dressed - but at least it was looking better. The grass was returning, as were the leaves on the trees and the stray wildflowers that littered the ground. It was finally nice enough to go outside.
Haleyâs first thought was going to spend some time at the fountain, just enjoying the fresh air and sound of the water trickling. Or maybe the beach, with the sand beneath her toes and seagulls cawing loudly. But another thought popped into her head. Nestled away into the mountain, just a short hike up past the carpentry shop, was an old wishing well. Her parents used to take her and Emily up there when they were little so they could toss in their coins and make their wishes. It had been a while since sheâd been up there, probably about a year, and the walk sounded pretty nice right about then. And itâd make for some great shots, seeing as she was trying to update her portfolio with some nicer shots.
So, camera around her neck and equipment bag over her shoulder, Haley put on her âhiking bootsâ that definitely were just for aesthetic and not for actual hiking and head out the door. The town graveyard was in sight from their front door, and it was usually a totally depressing eyesore for Haley, but she was surprised to see her older sibling hanging out there. Though it really shouldnât have been surprising. Emily was a wildcard.
âYou hanging out with ghosts, weirdo?â she asked after sheâd crossed over to greet them. The assortment of flowers gathered on her lap answered the unspoken question of âwhat are you doing?â, and Haley nodded in silent understanding. âIâm just happy to see youâre spending your day off wisely.â She glanced along the path she was about to walk along, pausing in thought, before looking at Emily again. âCome up to the wishing well with me. I wanna take some new shots and I could use a subject. We can figure out something to do with your flowers for the shots, too.â
âFried Pickles and Tacos Separate are amazing but are you pregnant? Them together are gross as hell, Halez.â The male said with a laugh and looks into her eyes deeply âBecause Youâre my best friend. What else is new.â Carson said with a laugh as Haley dragged him towards the Saloon.
âHmm, considering the last time I fucked a guy was, like, almost five years ago, Iâm gonna say the chances of me being pregnant are pretty low. I think Iâm just so hungry for real food that Iâm willing to eat whatever that isnât quinoa.â She exhaled a very dramatic sigh, like her life was oh-so hard. But she flashed a proud little smile at what he said next. âHm. Fair. Iâm a pretty awesome friend.â She headed into the saloon, crossing over to lean against the bar. âWhat sounds good to you, Car?â
âyeah. health food isnât always the best. quinoa has a weird texture to me too. black bean burgers are good though! if you can manage to make them keep their shape. also difficult to do.â
leah pursed their lips, tilting their head to the side. âok, but i havenât tried libbyâs momâs muffins yet. i may have to sneak over and swipe some.â leah shoved their hands in their pockets as they walked alongside haley towards the saloon.
âpizza sounds good. iâm not too picky, so you can pick the toppings too. justâŠno cilantro. it tastes like soap.â
âItâs SO weird! Itâs like cous-cous if cous-cous were worse. And cous-cous is already super gross!â Haley exclaimed in obvious disdain, her nose wrinkling up unpleasantly. âI donât mind black bean burgers, but I have to drown them in sauce or other toppings to mask the texture. It isnât the best ever.â
âOh you have the cilantro-soap gene?â she asked. âI always thought Alex was just being dramatic about that - because you know how boys are with greens. So dumb.â She rolled her eyes. âI guess itâs, like, a genetic thing and I should probably apologize to him for making fun of him... but Iâm definitely not about to do something like that.â She tugged open the door for them as they got there, letting Leah walk in before her.
âHey, we all make mistakes,â he said with a shrug. He smiled when they linked arms and head in the direction of the saloon. âOkay, the smelling like grass is definitely a downfall, but itâs really not bad. Itâs nice to feel tired and like I did something productive in a day. Plus, I donât gotta pay for a gym membership,â he teased gently. When they got to the saloon, he held the door open for her before they head inside.Â
âI donât think I could do it. Grass and air and stuff are nice smells, but only in, like, candle form. Not that you smell bad or anything! You just smell... like Peter,â she said decidedly, her words followed by a curt but definitive nod. âIâve grown to appreciate it. You and all your grass stains.â She leaned into his side with a bright affectionate grin before stepping into the saloon, a quick âthank youâ passing her lips as she did so. âWanna get a pizza to split? Iâm not picky about toppings, so whatever you want.â A beat passed. âAs long as thereâs no onions or ground beef. Yuck. Or bacon. Or bell peppers. But whatever else!âÂ
âOh boy, whatever it is I can guess it isnât going to be good,â Libby said, a small grimace on her face as she braced herself for whatever it was. When Haley responded, her nose wrinkled up in disgust, âOkay, ew. Look, I get the whole vegan thing and like good for her, but fuck quinoa.â She had been just about to suggest they head to The Saloon for a more edible option, but she beat her to it. âGood plan, I always trust whatever Gus cooks up,â she said before shrugging, âHonestly, he might even be able to make quinoa edible,â she said before adding, âAlso, I assumed youâd cover me because you love me,â she then playfully blew a kiss in her best friends direction.Â
...
Haley knew Libby would be on the same page as her, so when she reacted in disgust, Haley nodded vehemently. âI know! I donât get her! Thereâs so many vegan foods that are good but itâs like she wants to be complicated and nasty. I guess she likes being miserable and taking me down with her.â Her bright blue eyes rolled in despair. âYeah, Gus knows what heâs doing. Clearly more than Em does.â She giggled at the kiss Libby blew at her, bringing her hand up to return the favor. âYa mooch. Youâre lucky I love you as much as I do.â She pushed off of Libbyâs couch that sheâd only just settled down on, to give the haunting tale of her failed lunch, and headed out the door to go down the stairs to the sidewalk.
âShe did black bean burgers once that even I have to admit were pretty good,â he chuckled. âBut nothing will ever beat the real thing, in my opinion.â He couldnât help but smile at her sigh. âLetâs have some classic greasy food and too much caffeine. Lord knows I need it after today, I feel like Iâm gonna collapse.â
âYeah, I didnât mind her black bean burgers. She makes beyond meat ones a lot too and I really like those. She just crossed a line with this one.â Haley shook her head solemnly before hooking her arm through his to head off on the short walk to the saloon. âI bet! I couldnât spend a single day doing all the shit that you do. Iâd have to take a billion showers and even more breaks.â Her nose wrinkled up unpleasantly. âIâll treat you, though. And maybe get that grass scent off of you.â
Peter scrunched up his face at the idea of quinoa burgers. âOkay, that sounds nasty and I try to be pretty open minded. Iâll never say no to free food though, and I could really go for some fries or something.â
âNo right, though? Iâm all for a good veggie burger, but quinoa? Like, burgers are supposed to taste good.â Haley rolled her eyes and let out a very melodramatic sigh. âYes, fries! Instead of... like, skinny cut carrots or some shit. I donât even know, Emilyâs always trying to make âhealthyâ versions of yummy foods. Iâll get us a big plate of actual tasty fries. And some iced coffees - Gus makes a really good one.â
âFired Pickles and tacos?â Carson said as he looks at her then said â What the fuck is a Quinoa Burger?â The male asked the female as he said âSure Iâll go with you but itâs for a drink and a real burger and sweet potato fries are needed right about now. No no, Iâm buying and thatâs not me asking. Iâm telling you damn it.âÂ
âIf only she made me fried pickles and tacos. That sounds delicious right now. But no, she made a burger full of lies and sadness.â Haley exhaled a very dramatic sigh with a roll of her wide eyes. âYou spoil me, Car. Iâm buying next time!â Though she knew heâd never let her. Still, she hooked her arm through his to pull him towards the saloon with her.
