Halston Hawthorne was born the oldest of seven children on a farm in northern Illinois in 1852. As much as he enjoyed working on the farm, he was also curious as to what life was like in the then-growing city of Chicago. Thus at eighteen, he chose to leave the farm, making his way to the city and getting a job working in the stockyards. The job was fine, but what really drew his attention was the daughter of his boss. She and Halston had an instant attraction, and were soon sneaking off to see each other as often as possible.
Her father did not approve of his daughter dallying with a worker, however, and he attempted to tell the young man off. Halston was not deterred, though, and continued their romance...until he learned his paramour was with child. Her father was furious when he found out, and might well have harmed Halston--if he had not already been on his way out of the city. He felt awful for abandoning her in such a callous way, but he was young and headstrong and did not yet have the courage to stand up to someone like his boss. So he ran, and headed West, as far as he could go, hoping to start a new life out on the range.
Things did not start off so well, however. On the ride out there, the stagecoach Halston was riding in was ambushed by outlaws, who demanded everyone's valuables. He should have complied, but his temper got the best of him and he refused, which led to the outlaws beating him badly and still taking his possessions. Left with next to nothing, he managed to find employment in the saloon in the town which was the last stop on the stagecoach's route. After several years of hard work, he had earned enough money to purchase a small plot of land and some livestock, and Halston was content with his small farm.
Yet it was not to last. The very same band of outlaws who had ambushed the stagecoach eventually showed up at his farm, again demanding valuables. And again, Halston should have complied, but he did not, and this time the outlaws stole his livestock and burned his farmhouse and barn. Furious that he had lost everything he had worked so hard for, he took his last bit of money, went into town and bought a six-shooter, determined to have it out with the leader of the outlaws. The older man was amused by the young man's tenacity, and agreed to a duel. But Halston had little experience with a gun, and was no match for the hardened outlaw, who easily shot him square in the chest and left him to die.
Then, as Halston lay in the dust expecting death to take him, a woman suddenly appeared above him, a woman who offered him the chance to be reborn and to take revenge on those who had wronged him. Hardly knowing to what he was agreeing, Halston accepted the offer, and she proceeded to turn him. Now a vampire, his first thought was to go and kill the outlaws, but his maker convinced him that he only needed to kill the leader, and then the two of them could take over the gang. Thinking being on the wrong side of the law was the only path open to him now, he agreed, and indeed once he had taken out the outlaw leader in the blink of an eye, they had little trouble convincing the rest of the outlaws to follow them.
Thus for the next few decades, Halston and his maker--who had also became his lover--led one of the most feared gangs of outlaws in the West. But as time wore on, and the West gradually became settled, he became disenchanted with such a lifestyle, and he finally parted ways with his maker and settled down to try and start a farm again. This time, he only raised horses, having grown very fond of them and things were mostly peaceful for him for most of the twentieth century.
That changed when he discovered that his ill-fated affair with his boss' daughter from his early days in Chicago had actually led to a family line which had continued throughout the century. It seemed his boss had not been so angry about the pregnancy after all, and he and his wife helped his daughter to raise the child. Now that child's descendants were numerous, and Halston found he too unexpectedly had many human descendants, one of whom had researched the family line enough to seek out their ancestors, and when that great-great-grandchild found his name listed on his farm, they came to see him.
As much as it pleased him to know he had sired a long lineage, it was hard for Halston to think that he had also abandoned the family he could have had, and seeing one of his descendants was difficult to bear. So once again, he ran from his responsibilities, leaving the US and heading for the UK. Once there, he learned of a place called Faerune, where many other supernatural creatures were apparently living. That he hoped would suit him well, so he purchased a small plot of land on the edge of the city, where he has been raising horses for the last several years.
What's Happening Now
When the wall of crystals came crashing out of the ground to surround the city, it came right up at the edge of Halston's farm, cutting out part of his horses' grazing field, not to mention terribly frightening all of the horses in the process. This loss of part of his property has not endeared the Unseelie Queen to him, nor has the fact that he is now stuck in Faerune completely. While he knows better than to outwardly oppose anyone, he is certainly not going to support a ruler who seems to show such little disregard for the lands and lives of others, including animals.
