This movie is currently a huge meme in china. It came out of nowhere and inexplicably got a theatrical release, looks like ass, was animated completely by the director and his mother, and took several years to make. "Niu Lai" translates roughly to "The bull is coming" and apparently the film has several other allusions to stock market puns. The Chinese stock market coincidentally had an uptick the day of its release which added further fuel to the meme fire. After going viral Niu Lai began to actually turn profit at the box office, theatres unprepared for Niu Lai mania (the creators did not distribute any promotional material) had to improvise DIY posters:

Niu Lai has now been pulled from theatres.

Good news: Niu Lai was only pulled from cinemas its hometown, because "the film’s poor quality could harm the city’s image." The rest of China is still screening it.

My problem with the term "hubris" in literary analysis is that folks like to toss it around in contexts in which it just plain doesn't apply. The notion of hubris inherently presumes that humans have assigned stations beyond which it's morally – and, often, metaphysically – wrong to reach. Most modern fictional milieux simply lack such an implicit hierarchy. That character isn't guilty of hubris; they're guilty of negligent risk management.

Folks will analyse a fictional character who accidentally blew up half a city and act like the resulting seven-digit body count is purely ancillary to the real crime of aspiring to exceed one's God-given place in the Great Chain of Being.

The definition that I feel is being thrown around is:

Hubris is when a character has an expectation of their ability to perform a great feat that significantly exceeds their actual ability to do so and possibly the ability of anyone to do so; it causes a dramatic downfall because the character's failure is inevitable and its consequences are catastrophic.

This justifies the use in the context of "blew up a city trying to ascend to godhood" without presuming that the ascension itself was inherently wrong. Though, that belief might still be there anyway?

The problem is that, in my experience, even when folks think they're using that definition, in very short order it usually collapses back into talking like the desire to exceed one's grasp was itself the principal crime, rather than the subsequent lack of heed for the consequences.

I don't think people who come from wattpad after the purge and now want ao3 to have its own official app understand that one of the main reasons behind the recent wattpad purge that drove them to ao3 was due to pressure from appstore demanding wattpad to be more strict and follow appstore's policy. wattpad complied in order for its app to be able to remain on appstore. thus the wattpad purge.

ao3 doesn't have an app because for it to have an app, appstore will have to approve it first. and if, hypothetically, ao3 needs appstore to approve it, it will also have to abide by appstore's pro-censorship stance and start banning dark and taboo fics, which is against its own core principle of being completely against censorship.

ao3 doesn't need an app. it works more than fine without an app. the reason ao3 can allow dark and taboo fics, the reason it can allow the most disgusting and shockingly vile fics, and be completely against censorship is because it doesn't need appstore's approval. it stands on its own as a non-profit organization with functioning site and a team of lawyers protecting its platform, its users, and every single fanwork on its platform.

For most of its history the church’s (general) official stance on witches has been that they’re not real.

There was a hundred years or so there where people died and that was bad. Let me be clear. But it’s not a universal truth of living in a Christian region that somebody is gonna be burned for being a witch.

For one, a lot of people were hanged. Not burned. For two, most of the time people were shrimply not worried about them except for that time when they were.

Also a lot of people were accused and then just...not a lot happened. They were put on a ducking stool, or put in the stockade for a few hours, or driven through town on a cart and mocked (yes, the first half of that Monty Python scene is reasonably accurate. None of those are pleasant, mind you, but they're not death by a long shot. Sometimes the accused would be in court and be like "I pinky swear I didn't know I was doing a witchcraft, I'm sorry" and they'd be told "okay fine but you better go home and pray, like, a lot."

Also the throwing witches into a well thing is just fake. That is not a thing that happened. Most of the torture devices you've seen were invented by the Victorians to make the past seem more barbaric than it was. There was torture, but we're talking about the rack or the ducking stool. Even breaking on the wheel was a form of execution, not torture. (It was a pretty torturous execution, but you wouldn't do it expecting it to not be lethal, is what I mean.) Stuff like the iron maiden and the pear of anguish and chastity belts were all just...made up.

Deadly egg recall

The FDA has upgraded an egg recall issued last month to “Class I,” its highest risk level, as it warns the public that consuming the products could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The recall of 1,589,577 dozen white-shell eggs and brown cage-free shell eggs was initially issued by Midwest Poultry Services in late July, which warned they might be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis.

According to the company, the eggs were produced and distributed from farms in Texas between June 6 and July 3 and have sell-by or best-by dates between July 20 and August 17. The recalled egg cartons have either the code P-1950 or 0840962 and Julian Dates between 157-184.

Recalled eggs were shipped to foodservice and retail customers in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana.  Recalled eggs were available to consumers at Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana; Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana, and other smaller retail and foodservice outlets in these states plus Mississippi and New Mexico.

Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and New Mexico are the currently affected states.
