insidious program_me, 2020
installation exploring the philosophy of language, with reference to political rhetoric and how it operates.coded using multiple different programming languages (processing, python, c++) to create three cohesive aspects:
a phoney speech produced by an algorithm manipulating a speech given by Boris Johnson, giving rise to a mixture of nonsense and borderline profundity
jarring and consuming sound produced from RGB values of video input of BBC Parliament
receipt printer spits out the same Boris Johnson speech with live generated synonyms of each word

a fools jig
relationship between environment, object and identity.
a fantastical scenario of floating yams and bathing aliens is accompanied by the funky but repetitive sounds of the skype ringtone.
it intends to transform the space into a surreal and intense environment while starting to explore the abstract, emblematic nature of my racial identity.
companions to the projection sit an ablution bowl (work in progress) and two etched tablets.
both reference their respective religious and spiritual connotations while simultaneously taking on new forms.
the wash bowl is makeshift and cartoon in nature but its handbuilt property provides a new sense of sacredness.
the tablets are inscribed with the phrase foreign visitors with little understanding of english, the example phrase listed when you google search for the definition of understanding. i found it interesting how, perhaps subjectively, the english is framed as the superior, and also how the phrase foreign visitors so aptly fits in with themes of alienation and being alien.
the phrase is written in japanese characters, not translated, but just using characters that look visually similar to the respective english letters. in manipulating the characters i’m starting to explore language and boundaries in relation to identity.
this work is presented in my own living space because that is where my identity is physicalised. in transforming it into a gallery/exhibition space, the room and the objects within it are elevated to the same kind of reverant and totemistic level that i myself subtly experience.
