Hamster photoshoot is underway!
For those of you who missed the announcement - all bunny photos, news, and updates will be posted in our bunny division of the rescue. You can find it on Instagram at @scoutssanctuary or on Facebook by looking up Scout's Sanctuary. All hamster and other animals except bunnies photos, updates, and anything else will remain here!
For some time now, Hamdad and I have been discussing a division of HHH that focuses on bunnies. For several reasons, one of which being so people who come to HHH's page get what they came for - updates on our HAMSTERS. Another reason being that bunnies are the third most abandoned animal in shelters, and we wanted to up our presence in the bunny world. When Scout passed, we really wanted to do something in honor of our big bunny. So we're introducing Scout's Sanctuary, a division of HHH where we'll be posting all our rabbit photos. You can find us on Instagram at @scoutssanctuary right now, and you'll be able to find us on Facebook and Tumblr as soon as we set up those accounts. Don't worry, we're still saving hamsters and manning HHH - just this way we'll be able to keep things more organized & more focused!
Is is safe to be handling the baby bunnies so young? Is there a chance of the mom rejecting them? I know you guys are doing the best job possible, I'm just concerned about the bunbuns
Thank you for your concern! We thought the same as you at first, so as soon as we found the babies in the momma’s cage, we reached out to some of the best rabbit rescue and rabbit breeders. We’d heard the apparent myth that momma bunnies would reject babies if humans touched them, like hamster mommas do. The answer shocked us, too - it was that rabbit moms don’t recognize their babies based on smell, so human smell doesn’t matter at all to them. It’s actually recommended to handle them twice a day until day ten, when you up handling. Momma buns never reject babies due to humans touching them - at least domestic rabbits, I don’t recommend touching a wild rabbits babies! Also, the moms only feed their babies once a day, and it’s typically the only time they go to the nest, and it’s almost always at dusk or dawn. We don’t hold them for prolonged periods, but it’s best to check them over twice a day to make sure there’s no injuries, and that everyone’s doing okay. Especially with Hazelnut’s injury, we have to clean it twice a day. We only snap pictures while checking everyone over, and then back to the nest they go. Once they open their eyes, at ten days, we’ll up our handling to more prolonged periods, but right now we have to make sure that they stay warm in their nest. Thank you for asking - I hope you don’t mind if I post this publicly for anyone else concerned!
