Soon her rock supply was dwindled down to the small rocks, so she started hurling them like bullets at Harpoon. Quite a few of them hit, but most of them whizzed past him and traveled into the crowd. Luna thought nothing of it until she heard a cry from an elderly pony that caused her to pause.
Luna pulled her magic back a bit and dropped the rocks after locking eyes with some of the ponies in the crowd and observing their terrified expressions. She feared that she might hit one of them hard enough to send them careening off of the path. She wasn’t going to make that mistake again. Harpoon brought her mind back to the present when he bucked her injured leg. “What? Daydreaming about a coltfriend maybe? You seem quite distracted.”
Luna hissed from the pain. He was going to win if she didn’t keep her mind in the present. Luna picked up a hefty branch and whipped it at Harpoon, but he dodged it. In a panic she reached for it again with her magic and stopped it just short of knocking some ponies in the crowd back. She breathed a sigh of relief. That would have been messy.
Harpoon bucked her hard enough in the side to knock her off balance. “Goodness, Princess, you’d think I was fighting an incompetent filly by the way you’re tossing your magic around. Maybe if you’d actually put your full effort into a blast or a… toss, you’d get somewhere in this fight. Why have such concern for these common citizens when you could win and save mo-“
Luna had regained her grip on the branch while Harpoon was busy running his mouth and used it as an incredibly large bat to send him flying several yards away. Harpoon’s face made a satisfying crunch sound when the branch connected with his nose, leaving blood and flesh behind. Luna dropped the branch and smiled, it felt good to get a solid hit on him.
Ruby couldn’t contain the intense rate of her heart at the sight of Harpoon flying through the air. For a second, just a second, there was hope. Soon questions were buzzing among the other ponies in the crowd. Was this going to be it? Was this going to slow Harpoon down enough for Luna to win? Was this just false hope?
He looked like a real nightmare when he came back into view. Flesh was torn from his face, exposing his menacing fangs at their full length, from gum to tip. His jaw was hanging slack, like it was about to fly off as he walked. His shoulder was dislocated, the joint protruded as he let it dangle. Before he started fighting again he reset his jaw and shoulder. The awful sound of joints popping back into place made everypony cringe, including Luna. Harpoon was on Luna every second after that. There were hooves flying in every direction, Luna taking most of the damage. Harpoon was angry. “Don’t you know it’s rude to interrupt?!”
The crowd looked on the fight with more and more horror. Luna was losing. It seemed hitting Harpoon only benefited him. Luna would get a hit in here and there; but it was Harpoon doing the real damage and exploiting Luna’s injured leg. He was constantly trying to sweep it, and finally he succeeded, causing the Princess to fall hard on her side.
Harpoon’s expression was devoid of any mercy; his face was anger and sharp teeth. “Have a bit of a spill, Princess? Sad you can’t stay on your hooves.”
Luna saw that his foreleg wasn’t far from her. She took a healthy bite out of it. She tried to charge up her horn to push one of them away, whether it pushed her or Harpoon wasn’t her concern. She just wanted to get away. The only thing that came of it was nausea. Her magic wouldn’t gather at all. Harpoon kicked her hard in the nose. “What a nice attempt.”
While Luna was desperately trying to think of a way to get her magic working again, Harpoon took the opportunity to wrap his teeth carefully around the hock of her left hind leg, and with a sudden, violent jerk, he dislocated it.
Luna bit down hard on her bottom lip to stifle a scream, and vomit. She didn’t know what was worse, the terrible pain in her hind legs or the horrible nausea. She was feeling dizzy and weak. She couldn’t put any pressure on her back legs without intense pain. She fell back onto her rear every time she tried to get up.
“Oh my, isn’t that just pitiful? Maybe one of your guards can assist you up? Oh wait! They’re out of commission, much like you are.” Harpoon laughed.
Luna mumbled a string of obscenities not befitting a Princess under her breath.
Harpoon got nose to nose with her. There was still mangled flesh where his mouth should’ve ended, making his smiles twice as menacing and incredibly grotesque. Luna could smell his blood, it was repulsive to her. “Care to repeat that, Princess?”
Luna took the chance and spat Harpoon’s blood into his face. Knowing that Luna wasn’t going anywhere, Harpoon sauntered over to the crowd. He picked out Ruby’s husband, a muscular looking earth pony, and took him to the ground easily. Ruby let out a little whimper as she saw her husband in such close proximity to Harpoon. Standing on the pony’s ribs Harpoon used his mane like a napkin. He didn’t dare move for fear that Harpoon would do something horrible to himself or Ruby. Harpoon looked back at Princess Luna. “That was rude, you know. Spitting in the face of a generous host is quite unbecoming for a Princess.”
When Harpoon finally hopped off of the pony, Ruby hugged him close to her with her wing, tears brimming in her eyes. She didn’t like being so scared that she was useless to her husband.
Harpoon paced, head held high and confident, back and forth in front of the crowd. “Before I end this most entertaining game, anypony want to stand up for their Princess and their survival? Anypony want to go hoof to hoof with me? How about you?”
Harpoon was addressing Ruby’s husband, who Ruby pulled closer to her. She was terrified. Ruby’s husband shook his head. “No, Sir, I will not fight you. No pony here will fight you. I know these types of ponies; they’re all too good-natured to put themselves and their loved ones in danger by fighting you. They are nobler than you are.”
Harpoon moved closer to him. “Oh? So you wish to survive to take care of this thing?” Harpoon motioned to Ruby’s pregnant belly.
Ruby’s husband moved in front of her a little. “I will not fight you.”
Harpoon smiled and pulled Ruby away. “Oh, so if I removed the problem would you reconsider?”
Ruby’s eyes were wide, frightened. She was shaking hard and felt sick. “W-wha-“
Harpoon had her on the ground in a second. She squirmed a little, not wanting harm to come to her unborn foal. Harpoon stomped on her stomach and ribs, his eyes never leaving Ruby’s husband’s. Her husband’s ears bent back as he looked away in anger. If he did anything Harpoon might kill Ruby, of course he wasn’t thinking of the rules, but that they could always have another baby.
Luna watched in shock. “Do you want to lose so badly, Monster?”
Harpoon stopped and looked back at Luna. “Excuse me, Princess?”
She smirked. “Did you forget the rules already? You aren’t allowed to kill, not even the unborn.”
Harpoon let out a “humph” as fireflies settled over Ruby, fixing a few of her broken ribs and healing the foal inside of her. The wing he broke during his stomping was left, it was unnecessary to fix.
Luna cursed herself under her breath. That foal dying would have been a way out; but it made her more nauseous than she already was to think of an innocent life being snuffed out before it had the chance to see the world. She was wrong for thinking that would be a good way to end the game. That child didn’t deserve to be lost and its mother shouldn’t have to go through more trauma than she already had.
Harpoon moved away from her and moved on to a skittish looking stallion that practically cowered in front of him. Harpoon smiled at him. “You, how about I offer you something worthwhile?”
The stallion barely made eye contact. “L-like what, Sir?”
“A way out of this game, free from harm. Do you have any family with you?”
The stallion looked sheepishly to his right. “My mother and my marefriend.”
“And you want them to survive this, don’t you?”
The stallion nodded, a few tears came to his eyes. “I do, Sir.”
Harpoon gave him a predatory grin. “You see that pregnant pegasus on the ground over there? Would you violate her to save your family?”
The stallion shook his head. “I can’t do that to her, i-it isn’t right.”
“But you wouldn’t do it to save your family? To keep me from slaughtering them and yourself along with them?”
His ears were flat. “W-well…”
Harpoon gave a devious smile. “I thought so. Do this and those of your family that help you will live and they’ll get to leave with you.”
The stallion looked around confused. Was this a serious offer? Was he really going to be able to save his family? Was he really going to hurt this poor mare in order to survive? He was. He motioned for his mother and marefriend to follow him. His mother refused. “I don’t care if I don’t get to leave. This is wrong, you know it’s wrong.”
The stallion pleaded with his mother. “You know it’s the only guaranteed way out! What else am I supposed to do?”
“Stand here with me because it’s the right thing to do!”
“I’m sorry, Mom; but I want to live.” His marefriend held down Ruby’s forelegs. The stallion’s marefriend looked away as he attempted to mount Ruby, it seemed he was having some erectile difficulty. It took the stallion a little while to get his dysfunction under control, all the while Ruby was trying to pull her foreleg’s from his marefriend’s grasp. She practically had to sit on Ruby to keep her in place. The stallion apologized profusely before he properly mounted her.
Harpoon stood in front of Ruby’s husband, staring him dead in the eyes as Ruby pleaded and cried for the stallion to stop. Ruby’s husband shifted uncomfortably in front of Harpoon and ground his teeth hard as her cries got louder. Harpoon smirked. “Still believe these are good, noble ponies?”
Ruby’s husband said nothing and just stared at Harpoon, grinding his teeth harder and harder. He was getting angrier and angrier until he felt like he couldn’t contain it anymore. In a fatal lapse of judgment Ruby’s husband sucker punched Harpoon in the jaw, it left a little cut from his hoof and a light bruise that would grow darker as time went on.
Harpoon had him on the ground, held down by his neck. “That was brave of you. Foolish, seeing as how I’ve disabled your Princess and her guards; but brave. You there! Get off of this stallion’s wife. You and your marefriend are free to leave.”
The stallion looked relieved as he pulled out of Ruby and apologized to her again. He was deeply ashamed for what he had done.
Before the stallion and his marefriend walked away, Harpoon called to him. “I hope you can sleep at night knowing the horrific act you committed today.”
The stallion and his marefriend walked down the path toward Canterlot, his head hung so low his marefriend was afraid he might step on it. “You did what you had to do.” Was all his marefriend said before they disappeared out of sight.
Ruby’s husband scrambled past Harpoon to help her up. She stood a little ways away from him once she got to her hooves. Her eyes were tired, sad, and distant. How could her husband just allow her to be beaten and violated like that, and with their precious foal at stake?
The stallion’s mother stood close to Ruby. “I’m so sorry Dear, for all you’ve gone through today.”
Ruby nodded, her voice was cold. “Thank you.”
“I know it’s difficult, and terrible; but once it’s over you’ll have your beautiful foal and you’ll be able to move on from all this.”
Ruby nodded, she didn’t look anywhere but the ground. “I hope a day like this can be tucked away somewhere and never found again.”
Harpoon cocked his head a little at their exchange. He looked at Ruby’s husband, who instantly tensed up. “Would you like to take your wife out of this place?”
