every morning people plug their hearts into the little outlets in their chests bc those mechanical hearts are the only thing that still allows humans to feel any sort of emotion anymore, but wearing one isn’t recommended for too long, so at night everyone takes them out to charge back up. the hearts are big lumps of wires and spinning, glowing things and each one shines with different colours depending on the emotion being felt by the wearer.
the settings on the hearts can be changed but only by heartweavers, who are few and very reclusive, so when victor finds one by chance on one of his aimless walks, he immediately enters the little shop to ask the– well, the most beautiful man in the world apparently to fix his heart, which has been stuck alternating between the gloomy, cloudy gray of loneliness and the pale gray-blue of sadness for literal months and he just has had enough.
it’s the very moment the man behind the cluttered counter smiles at him a smile so tender, so shy, yet so sweet, that victor’s chest bursts into vivid red and both him and the man go up in matching blushes which are more than just the remnant glow of his heart.
“sorry about that,” victor rushes to say, one hand covering the device.
“no, no, that’s, um… that’s fine,” the man says with a tiny, precious squeak at the very beginning. “I… thank you, that’s very flattering. I think you’re very good looking, too.”
because of course he’d know what vivid red means, he’s a heartweaver, it’s his job! and as if victor’s attraction to him couldn’t be clear enough, his heart suddenly shifts into a vermilion so powerful that even victor’s hand can’t block its shine when he realizes what the man just said. that it’s mutual attraction and that means–
“I’m sorry,” victor repeats again when his heart pulses under his hand, growing brighter and more insistent.
but, again, the man shakes his head.
“no need. but… can I help you with something? is that why you came?”
he nods his chin at victor’s heart, which whirs and buzzes like a happy kitten beneath his palm. it is the very reason why victor has entered this small hole-in-the-wall shop, but not exactly this reason… in fact, victor’s problem seems to have fixed itself all on its own and the one who takes credit for it is–
victor drops his hand from his chest and lets his red heart glow as he smiles his best, sweetest smile.
“no,” he says. “I think I came here for you.”
and when the man’s heart turns a startling peony pink of surprise, victor knows that fate might just as well be real and rooting for him after all, because it brought him here… right?
