The fact that Joel wouldn't look Ellie in the eye when they spoke on the porch up until the moment he asked her about Dina.

He was so scared to look her in the eye at first. You could see how nervous he was, just staring at the blackness of his coffee. Just the thought of possibly doing or saying anything wrong to drive Ellie even further away again wouldn't let him. But he needed to ask her this one thing, this ONE thing, as a part of him realized that back at the dance, when he saw her kissing Dina, she was probably trying to hide the fact she was into girls from him the whole time because she was scared of what he would think. So he went for it. He plucked up all his courage and with a soft and careful tone in his voice, he asked her regardless.

He cared about her too much not to let her know what he thought about her relationship with her best friend—not to let her know that no matter who she was with, the person must have been the luckiest one. And that was the moment he finally lifted his eyes on her, so she would've known he meant it.

That man loved her beyond everything. How silly Ellie was to think he would judge her for liking girls. I guess I'll never get over the fact she never told him, because I truly believe Joel was the kind of guy who would pull her closer and kiss her forehead with the words, "Look, I don't care if you're dating Jesse, Dina, or Jesse dressed as Dina. As long as you're happy." and Ellie would laugh, call him stupid, and I would die happy.
