So did John Gage and Roy DeSoto go nearly six (6) years without finding out each other's birthday?
This scene in "The Exam" cracks me up, first of all. But what also gets me is how both Johnny and Roy look at each other like they're hearing each other's birth date for the first time??? 😂 The scene is still funny as heck, maybe just should've been a moment from say, season 2.
"Hey Gage, when's your birthday?" Chet Kelly
"I'll read you your horoscope." - Chet
"I don't believe in that stuff."
"Okay, you don't wanna know. Uh Roy, yours is in November, I think it's sometime near mine."
** reads all-positive sounding horoscope ** ... "Not bad." - Chet
"August 27. Is when I was born."
"Ohhhh okay. Let’s see here … We got us a Virgo. Let’s see … "
"Well, whatsa matter? Read it." - Johnny
"Eh, forget it. You’re probably right. It’s just dumb." - Chet folds up the newspaper he's reading the horoscopes from.
"Why'd he - why do you do that?"
"Can't you see I'm trying to concentrate?!"
It cracks me up that at first Johnny was dismissive of Chet's attempted engagement regarding his birth date and horoscope of the day. Only when Roy went along with it and gave his own birth date to Chet, did Johnny change his mind. And that's when Chet, ever the puppeteer when it came to Johnny, proceeded to pull his string. Johnny needed to learn when to stop falling for that guy's provocation. I know that most fans found their cat-and-mouse funny, but sometimes I feel like Chet could've used a couple of good cat-baps. 😉
