Instrumentation This is a design I sketched in one of my previous sketchbooks, but only picked up to ink last month. I have been working mostly in pencil for a while, and so wanted to work with the solid lines of a pen again. There is no conscious concept behind this; I was mostly experimenting with the character of the lines. Don’t remember if the slightly obvious resemblance to a uterus and ovaries was intentional or not.

Cheers darlin' Here's to you and your lover boy Cheers darlin' I got years to wait around for you

 The first song I heard by Damien Rice. The usual routine for when he performs “Cheers Darlin’” live seems to be: invite an audience member up to the stage (to play the part of the girl), where a table is set up with two wine glasses, tell the story of the night he wrote the song while downing 3 or more glasses of red wine to “get back into the moment” (and also encouraging the guest to do the same), and then transition into the song. 4 Years of Autumn

My contribution to the calendar the Sendai Silkscreen Association is putting together for next year. This year, I picked the month of September, although the photos I used as reference were taken during a camping trip last October, when most of the trees had turned shades of yellow, orange, and red.

Traveling for about a month this fall meant I was more limited on time this year than last year (see last year’s design for the month of April here), so I think I deliberately went with a design that did not require as much accuracy and as many layers. There are no gradients, no super precise alignment required – factors that encouraged a more stress-free screen-printing experience.

No major mishaps occurred, but there were several instances when ink would come through unexpected holes and areas worn thin, requiring some patching up with tape and resulting in some unpredicted variations. Doing the prep work before coming to class made things go by much faster (should use that as a lesson for my personal screen-printing projects), so I completed all the printing in 4 lessons, doing 2 layers per lesson on average. 

Nothing too terribly deep embedded in this – just the nostalgic sentiments of autumn, a reflective glance on these past 4 years that I have spent in Japan, and something winding through time and connecting all of these experiences together.

I am not sure if the silkscreen class will continue after I leave next year, as most of the (relatively few) participants are up there in terms of age and Koide-sensei has her share of health concerns, but she says she will continue the class as long as there are people who show up.
