         it  wasn’t  a  dare  this  time ,       but  a  reckless  choice  made  after  his  shift  that  landed  him  in  the  back  in  the  care  of  dr.  bordelaux .  as  he  sat  on  the  table ,  he  had  a  vague  memory  of  the  doctor  a  few  months  ago  telling  him  that  dislocated  joints  lead  to  an  increased  risk  of  repeat  injuries .     fuck.     why  hadn’t  he  hadn’t  thought  of  that  earlier ,      before .     maybe  than  he  would  have  been  a  bit  more  careful ,      probably  not  though .          ‘  how  you  doin’  doc   ?   ’   he  winced  out,  giving  a  pained  smile  to  the  familiar  face  that  walked  into  the  room .         @sunsetsmiled​

        the  volume  is  all  the  way  up .       honey  herself  had  once  described  charlie’s  music  taste  as     eclectic ,     which  was  true  only  with  the  clarifier  she  had  followed  it  with :      early  2000s  and  bad ,  or  female  pop  top  40s  with  about  a  six  month  shelf  life .      it  was  currently  the  former  that  was  struggling  through  the  poor  stereo  system ,  a  few  decibels  or  trips  like  this  away  from  giving  in ,  as  he  drove  them  to  the  beach .  for  the  first  few  songs  he  had  been  content  to  nod  his  head  more  than  necessary ,  but  it’s  clear  he  enjoys  the  one  that  comes  next  from  the  fact  that  his  foot  becomes  a  little  heavier .  he  grins ,  turning  to  face  her  in  the  passenger  seat ,  belting  along .                @sunsetsmiled​

“Well,” Tobby spoke as he looked up from under the hood of the car at the person next to him. “I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but at this point you might want to consider getting a new car.” He looked back down at the inner mechanics of the car as he used his wrench to tinker with something. He let his words settle for the best effect as he focused seriously on the car, waiting for the person to react. Several minutes passed, before he cracked a grin and slammed down the hood. “I’m kidding, I’ll just need to keep it overnight; order some parts. It’ll be ready for you tomorrow afternoon as if it came off the lot yesterday.”

tldr :      general  tw  here  for  mentions  of  neglect ,  verbal  abuse ,  and  drugs .      charlie  grew  up  the  younger  of  two  barton  boys  and  was  basically  raised  by  his  brother ,  james ,  as  his  parents  were  too  busy  worrying  about  bills  they  couldn’t  pay  and  anger  for  each  other .  charlie  was  a  kind ,  good - hearted  kid ,  but  he  was  never  the  smartest ,  getting  by  in  school  by  the  skin  of  his  teeth .  besides  that  and  a  general  avoidance of  home ,  things  were  fine  until  james  enlisted  in  the  military .  suddenly  charlie  was  the  only  other  person  in  the  house  besides  his  bitter  parents ,  and  quickly  he  was  turned  into  a  weapon  for  them  to  use  against  each  other ,      of  course  he’s  failing ,  he’s  your  son ,       but  charlie  was  the  one  who  walked  away  with  injuries .  he  started  avoiding  home ,  only  returning  when  you  couldn’t  crash  at  a  friend’s  house  for  yet  another  night .  when  a  teenage  boy  is  seeking  new  excuses ,  it  is  often  that  he’ll  find  himself  with  new  and  exciting  bad  habits .  he  started  smoking ,  cigarettes  under  the  high  school  football bleachers ,  then  later  weed  in  a  friend’s  basement .  he  started  getting  into  fights  when  there  was  nothing  else  to  do .  eventually ,  after  he  just  barely  managed  to  graduate ,  he  started  dealing  for  extra  cash .  while  being  a  drug  dealer  isn’t  exactly  an  occupation  that  fits  who  charlie  is  a  heart ,  it  was  the  first  thing  that  made  him  feel  independent .  it  was  with  pill  money  that  charlie  could  finally  move  out  of  his  parent’s  place .  he’s  not  used  to  having  cash  on  hand,  and  there’s  something  exciting  about  it  that  keeps  him  in  the  game .  as  a  real  job ,  he  works  as  a  bartender  at  the  local  bar ,  and  is  always  a  friendly  face .

somewhere  along  the  line  charlie  picked  up  card  tricks  as  something  to  do   (  probably  because  decks  of  cards  weren’t  expensive  and  he  didn’t  need  someone  else  to  play  with  me  ) .   he  usually  has  a  deck  on  him ,  and  has  been  known  to  scam  patrons  of  salty  dogs  out  of  a  few  dollars  with  such  skills .

once  a  teacher  had  given  charlie  the  advice  to  repeat  what  he  thought  he  heard  back ,  and  it  has  become  a  habit  over  the  years .  he  always  repeats  orders  back  to  customers  at  the  bar .

charlie  has  a  bit  of  a  promiscuous  streak ,  and  to  some  he  might  have  a  bit  of  a  reputation .  he’s  not  intentionally  malicious  to  anyone  he’s  slept  with ,  but  he  has  a habit  of  not  thinking  before  he  speaks  and  can  be  unintentionally  cruel .

he  can  be  goaded  into  almost  anything  with  the  phrase   “  i  dare  you .  ”

is  the  guy  who     always      suggests  playing  black  betty ,  roxanne ,  or  thunderstruck  at  parties ,  and  feels  clever  when  he  explains  it .  additionally ,  he’s  very  good  at  playing  quarters .

despite  the  fact  that  he’s  known  to  get  in  fights ,  he’s  actually  a  nice  guy ,  a  good  listener .  fights  are  more  something  to  do  than  anything  else .

a  highly  obnoxious  car  singer .      he’s  got  an  okay  voice ,  the  issue  lies  in  his  inability  to  truly  focus  on  driving  at  the  same  time .
