He yells in delight. “How long have you been here? It’s been a billion years it feels like.” He was aware of everything that happened in Scranton, so he wondered if Jim remembered too.

   “ definitely feels like less than a billion years, but long enough. “ he winces a little at the yelling, but it’s not the worst michael scott has ever done. it takes him back just a little when michael asks how long he’s been here, and he has to think for a moment. “ uhhh, not long? maybe a couple months or so? i guess i don’t actually know how long i’ve been here. but what about you? “

THE RECOGNITION IS RECIPROCATED, and pam is suddenly overwhelmed with relief. the sting of tears hit the back of her eyes as her legs quickly remember how to function, meeting him just as quickly. they practically collide into one another, arms winding around his shoulders in a tight embrace as she lets out an emotional laugh. “ you’re okay, ” pam exhales in an attempt to reassure herself that what was happening was real, and not some mean prank this reality was pulling on her. “ i don’t even— how are you.. ” pam pulls back, eyes staring up at him as she tries to find her words. “ i don’t even know where to start. i missed you. —this is crazy, isn’t it ?? ”

   the feeling of pam returned to his arms is incredible, how warm she is, the smell of her perfume, he’s not usually an emotional man, but his eyes itch with near tears as he holds her tight. “ god, pam, i missed you so much. i’m so sorry that i wasn’t with you, i don’t even know how we got so far apart..”

   when she pulls away, his hands cradle her face carefully, checking over every inch of her. just to be sure, nothing terrible had happened to him, but jim’s always been a cautious man. but the look in her eyes staring back at him... he’s awestruck with her all over again. “ this is so crazy, i was convinced this was one big dream until a couple days passed and i tried calling your phone every day but it kept telling me your number was disconnected. but, jesus, i’m glad you’re okay, and you’re here! ” he grins again, running his hands through her hair in disbelief that she’s right in front of him again.

“still, it’s nice to have a hobby that you enjoy doing,” she smiled. “my grandmother used to love to sew before it was too much for her fingers.” before that she had been a warrior. niye shrugged slightly. “I’m not quite sure - before I came here I was part of a group of fighters that helped defend the island I lived on from outside influences and intruders,” she paused, pursing her lips slightly. “I suppose I’m going to go towards something like that - my friend is already here, so it will be easier knowing she’s in the city,” 

   “ my mother was the same way. she used to love to cross-stitch and sew my clothes back together. it was very nice, she taught me when i was young. “ her fingers run over the stitches of the shawl draped over her shoulders, one that she can almost imagine a familiar body wearing. but her companion’s words intrigue her, and it pulls her from the daydream. “ it’s good you have a friend here, someone to help ground you in a... dizzying moment. though i’m sure you’re not doing much... defending here in the city. “

Michael jumped up and down when he saw Jim. He never expected to see him again. He knew sometimes people here forgot who they were, and old friends and even family members. But he couldn’t help but sprint to Jim. “Jimbo!” He claps him on the back. “You’re here!”

   oh no. now, it’s not to say that he isn’t.... happy to see michael scott sprinting towards him, calling his name. but! it’s certainly a shock. “ oh my god, michael, you’re also here. great!” he gives michael the trademark halpert lined-smile and sounds genuinely happy to see him.

IT’S A LITTLE SCARY HOW EASY IT WAS to fall into the monotony of day-to-day life. even now, in the grocery store, she’s peering down at two different types of yogurts as if everything was just fine. it’s not everyday you fall asleep in your apartment in scranton, only to wake up in a completely different reality, yet, here she stands, alone and debating on whether or not she should switch up her choice in snack. pam lifts her head after an indecisive sigh escapes her, before putting both into the shopping cart. she’s about to continue down the aisle when she spots a familiar face. her heart picks up speed, hope rising in her chest as she musters up the courage to call out to her boyfriend, “ —jim ?? ”

   it’s funny, y’know, miraculously switching lives and yet somehow still ending up at the same desk job at the same company. he always thought life would take him into a new direction, but this was just ridiculous. more of upside-down turn in the same direction as usual. the receptionist at the office isn’t as cute, though, at least he wasn’t, the position being left open for another week or so. taking his own calls is new and interesting. life is weird and different without pam, no one to joke around at work with, or to make the shopping list for him, the last six months have been a struggle relearning the bachelor life, which is why his cart is devoid of real food besides frozen pizzas and bags of cheese. he’s starting to rethink this whole reality change thing when he hears his name being called out by a familiar voice.

   “ pam?? oh my god, pam??? “ he drops the cheese, basket now forgotten in his near breakneck run towards her.

“I’m not much of a painter, but there was a few on the island where I lived,” she paused - she could vaguely remember sitting for a portrait when she was a child with her parents and her grandmother and she had been scolded for moving. “but I agree, even the smallest of details could be pivotal for breaking or making something,” it was the same for everything. “are you a painter?” she asked, smiling at the other. “I’m still figuring out what everything is around here, my world is so different from this one,” 

there’s something a little off about her words, but she doesn’t question it, strangers come from all walks of life and she’s not one to ask about it. “ oh no, not professionally. it’s just a hobby, i’d like to think i’m artistic enough, i have a lot of projects i work on. “ she gives a brief glance down to her basket full of paints and clay and pallets, they definitely gave her away. “ so what have you figured out yet, then? “

“it is. my brain starts breaking down if it’s too quiet.” the brunette couldn’t help looking over at the other womans blueprint, clearly impressed by the work as she let out a low whistle. “woah, sick. what are you working on?”

she’s not exactly used to people being impressed by her blueprints ; most are more impressed with the construction of the building afterwards. she turns the sheets a little more towards her seatmate for a clearer view. “ structural plans for the building of a new nonprofit building a few blocks over. it’s going to be the main office and room and board for at risk kids. “

niye was still getting used to this world and figuring out what sort of thing that she wanted to do. she was so used to being on kyoshi island, and then helping in the earth kingdom. 

she’d found herself a job in one of the gyms close to her apartment as a personal trainer, that was something familiar to her - but the one thing she couldn’t get used to was the markets here, or stores as someone had told her they were called. there was an abundance of choice, much more than she’d ever had at home. at the sound of a voice, she looked up. “hm?” she blinked a few times, registering what the other had asked her. “uh, the smaller one?” 

the woman seems a little confused, and she can’t exactly blame her. most people are not exactly fond of randomly sparked conversations. she almost wants to apologize and turn away, but there’s a reply and it’s a satisfactory one, at least. “ finer details, you think? that’s also what i was thinking, it’s rewarding to put in even the smallest bit into every corner of the piece. “ the larger canvas gets slotted back into place and the smaller one is slid underneath her arm for safe keeping, along with the basket full of acrylic paints and brushes ( to replace those destroyed in her rage. )

darcy looked up at the voice nearby, casting a smile in the others direction. she was never one to turn down company, so she pulled the other chair out before moving her things off that half of the table. “yeah, go for it. i work better with someone else around anyways.”

her things are placed down fully on the table as the other woman speaks, and she is grateful for confirmation. she plops into the seat offered to her, already unrolling a scroll to reveal a massive half-drawn blueprint. “ thank you, i’m glad i’m not the only one who likes having people around while i work. the background noise of co-habitual work is very helpful. “

her response to strangers passing them by isn’t necessarily an odd one ; he witnesses many interesting mannerisms and choices from those who visit this place, and he has never really been one to judge those things ( not all strange decisions lie in grief or fear, nor do they always lie in anxiety or anger, either – sometimes, people just have habits. who would he be, questioning the inner workings of another human being? he’s no deity, he’s no creator ). he follows her lead, glancing away from those they do not know, listening as their footsteps dissipate into the background noise of their surroundings. as their presence fades, he looks back over to her, though he is in no real rush to do so. in truth, he so rarely rushes anything ; why beckon time to speed by, when each second could hold so much more?

“oh,” he says, amusement evident in his tone. “it doesn’t sound silly at all. this is one of the few places that…always has a good crowd.” he means the comment in regards to those buried beneath them, as there isn’t typically too much traffic to the cemetery itself. someone needs to tend to them, though, and he’d just as well do it in solitude. he isn’t sure why, but it just feels…right, somehow. still, his joke is accompanied by a friendly smile, and he hopes it makes her feel a bit more at ease. 

she feels more comfortable in the single interaction with this man than she has ever before, as long as she can remember. maybe it’s his smooth voice, or the dream-like trance she was in before, but something about this moment lead her into a sense of security, like a warm blanket being tucked around her shoulders on a cold night. the wind picks up just in the slightest, rustling the trees above them ; a leaf falls ever so gently, and she feels inclined to pick it up.

“ i never seen to have any trouble finding my way around the grounds, or any kind of trouble with the people around. it’s nice, i feel like we’re all... here for a reason. or with a reason. “ she turns the leaf over in her hand and watches it shine in the sunlight, the shadows of the branches overhead dancing across it. it’s mesmerizing, or maybe she’s just still stuck in her head. “ i’m sorry, i don’t mean to keep you, i’ll start watching where i’m going now. don’t need to be almost running into anyone else. “

He keeps his hands near her, just in case she falls. He wants to be able to catch her. “I haven’t really ever gotten sick, but it’s not been that long since I’ve become a human. But I’m sorry you’re sick. I do not want to get migraines ever.” 

He frowns. “Maybe you should consider not going? Take a day to rest? Either way you choose I’ll walk you. Does food help it? I could get you something to eat if that will help?” He grabs her quickly. “Yeah I think your business partner will be able to live without you today.”

   his words throw her off some, thought that may just be residual fuzziness from the pain. surely he’s just making a joke, weren’t all people human? though that’s not to say some people don’t believe themselves like that, but she’s not one to judge other people’s choices. so she lets it go, opting instead to reply “ i wouldn’t wish them upon anyone. they’re horrible and they put a full stop on whatever you’re doing, it’s frustrating. “

   she grabs onto the hand he’s placed on her, she knows she’s near falling and it would be embarrassing if she thought more about it, but at least there’s someone with her who cares. that’s more than she’s had in a long while. “ maybe just a water? i appreciate your help, it’d take me even longer to get to work if you weren’t here. it’ll get easier once i’m inside where it’s a little cooler, i have some plans we need to go over today, so i promised i’d be there... whenever i managed to get there. “ she smiles a little sheepishly, ever the workaholic.

He nods. “I have never had a migraine but I heard they are absolutely horrendous. I’m so sorry to hear that. I’m here to help though if you need.” He watches her closely.

When she stands, he stands, just in case. “Please allow me to walk you? Just in case you have another wave of pain? I would hate for you to fall on the street. Bad things could happen.”

   she very much appreciates the help, she’s never been one to turn away a helping hand. “ thank you, i would like that very much. usually the pain goes away after the migraine wave but i’m left with... a fuzzy head. “ that’s the best way she can explain it, her vision blurs together and it’s difficult to make her way around. 

   “i was just on my way to work when it happened, i’m glad i have such a good business partner, i’m pretty late getting into the office. “ she jokes, taking small steps in the direction of her building, it’s only another ten minutes away, but it’ll feel like miles. she wobbles slightly and reaches out, hoping to grab onto her companion to steady herself.

Jack was concerned. He saw the woman with her head in her hands and watched her carefully, just in case she needed anything. He doesn’t bother her, waiting to see if she needs him.

She finally opens her eyes and he sighs in relief. He shakes his head. “I was more worried about you. Are you okay?” Concern was written all over his face.

   he asks a question, concern laced in his voice, and she feels bad causing a stranger such panic. she wants to wave him off, but that seems rude. “ i’m okay, really. thank you for watching out for me. just... migraines sometimes, you know? “ she tries to make light of the situation, though she knows it’ll do no good.

   standing is difficult, but she makes an attempt to get to her feet, only wobbling slightly. there’s still a constant pulse in her head, but it’s not nearly as bad as it was an hour ago. she gives the man a simple smile, again, in the hopes to disperse any kind of worry her new companion could have. “ i’m okay, really. these just come on randomly sometimes, nothing i can control. “

her smile is warm, and though he could probably read more into the expression, he chooses blissfully not to ; better to allow her this moment, he believes, rather than question motive or truth. not everything had a hidden meaning, after all – sometimes, people just behaved as people ( complex, maybe, but not worth the trouble – his own life was enough for him, and he’d rather not delve deep into the intricacies of one that was not his own ). his own smile softens further, easing into a gentle and calm demeanor as he takes a small step back and away from her.

“you really don’t have to watch where you’re going too much around here,” he says, gaze dancing around them for a moment – the trees allow their leaves to swirl in time, a collaborative moment of peace and purity. he swears the wildmother has gifted them this ( this benign calm, this second of time taken from its place on the clock-hands and instead placed between theirs, palms ripe with opportunity and change ). he looks back to her, almost amused. “ – can i ask why you’re here? if that’s alright, of course. i would hate to intrude.”

the wind blows in between the tree branches and a few leaves fall around them. it feels almost symbolic, but she can’t decipher what it could mean. she’s never been one to look to deeply into the meaning of coincidences, things happen for a reason; reasons she has no intention of uncovering. he asks her a question, simple and honest, though she can’t really say she has a good reason. “ oh, you’re okay. i don’t... really have a good answer to that. i suppose i just like the walking trails. it’s quiet and peaceful, and i think better when there’s not so much going on around me. “

a few people pass by them and she turns her head to the ground to avoid eye contact. she knows that a cemetery is most likely not for nonrelated visitors, and even on good days, when people are there to visit relatives long gone, no one wants to be stared at. but they walk by completely and she picks her head back up ( way up, the man in front of her must be almost a foot taller than her ) and waves her hand in front of her face. “ i know it must sound silly, willingly wanting to walk through a cemetery, but i’m stuck in my ways. “

everyone has their own ways of relaxing. some do yoga, some meditate, others find peace in simply letting things go.

she is none of those people.

she finds her comfort in peaceful destruction, in slashing canvases of painting she'll never finish, in ripping up old photos of things she can't even remember. things no one will miss. it's cathartic, like a tight ball in her chest being let loose, it's exhilarating.

but it comes at the cost of losing supplies and pieces she might have repurposed, so it warrants a trip to the art store to replenish what she lost. she browses the canvases and holds one out to the woman unfortunate enough to be caught in the aisle with her. " what do you think is better? a larger canvas? better for landscapes, but you lose the finer details. or a smaller one, smaller picture, sure, but they're compensated by such minuscule details. "
