The day I realized that I fell in love with the right person was the day I saw her love me.
Everyone’s early love life starts differently. I had a choppy start. I was in a relationship with a girl for way too long. I didn’t want to hurt her feelings and was too cowardly to look her in the face and break up with her. We were together for a number of years and it was rough from the start. Painful towards the end. We had nothing in common. Nothing at all. She was nice enough as a person that the idea of breaking her heart pained me but I had to do it, I just wasn’t happy.
I met the love of my life half a year afterwards. She was perfect, we shared so much in common but most importantly, she laughed at my jokes and I could make her laugh. Perfect.
Both of them said they loved me. I’m sure they both meant it, I doubt they lied but only one of them showed me a “warm” love for lack of a better word. One of them saw my blatant flaws and tried to patch me up, fix me. She’d remind me everyday and focus on them. The other girl saw my flaws, would acknowledge them but saw me as a whole person. Her eyes saw what I wanted to be not what I had done.
Oddly enough, same situation with both girls. I’d lie down, shirtless for a nap, I’d wake up with them caressing my back. One of them would caress my back, up and down and when her hand would travel over a blemish or a scar, she’d fixate on it. Trace her finger over it, circle it. She’d do this, highlighting every little detail. The other girl would trace her hand up and down my back, an unbiased hand. I was well aware of my scars and not once did she ever focus on them. I love this girl. I’ll always love this girl.
Everything about her made me want to become a better person, especially for her. She’ll never understand what she awoke in me, but this girl deserves happiness like no other.
