Arden smiles at his enthusiasm and picks up the record, tucking it under her arm as gently as she might cradle a child. 

“Okay then. So if this is the best musical experience of the year, what are the top ten of all time? And are they baby appropriate? I’ve been reading a lot about how babies benefit from listening to music. I don’t mind cursing for baby, but I’d prefer to avoid slurs and hateful terms.” Arden’s wearing a big sweater, but her stomach is still prominent as ever. She could practically use it as a table while she shops around the store. 

at the mention of a baby, auggie couldn’t control his expression, surprise easily read on his face, hie eyes two big saucers. “oh wow!” auggie had 0 experiences with pregnant women, babies or children. “of course! no cursing, just baby-appropriate grooves. do you need to sit, you can use the bench here, and i can bring you choices.” jumping from behind the counter, he joined her on the other side, smiling. “ok, uh. so, we could go like, no lyrics? classical music? maybe a bit of jazz?” fingers already moving fast, getting some satie and max richter to offer his customer. “can babies understand what you say? like, when they’re in the …womb?” he paused, looking stricken for a moment. “oh my, i hope not.”

Arden laughs. “Please don’t fuss over me. I’m pregnant, not mortally wounded. But really, you are being too kind.” She realizes almost immediately that if she was looking for a simple list to be filled, she might have approached the wrong worker. But that didn’t mean this conversation wouldn’t have its own rewards and her smile never falters.

“Well, their brains aren’t as developed yet so I imagine they might not understand it the way you or I do. I think they understand feelings though.”  

“You look concerned. Have you been reading Stephen King to other pregnant people’s unborn children or otherwise indoctrinating them to other non-age appropriate things?”

they  were  sitting  atop  a  post-box  just  out  the  front  of  books  &  crannies,  leafing  through  her  well-worn  copy  of  the  fellowship  of  the  ring  and  enjoying  a  little  bit  of  sunshine  on  her  skin  now  that  their  shift  was  over.        eventually  estella  would  jump  in  the  car  and  head  home,  or  perhaps  to  the  gym,  but  right  now  she  was  TOASTY  warm  in  the  sunlight,  and  currently  (only  in  the  book,  though  they  wished  otherwise  many  times)  fighting  the  nazgûl  with  aragorn,  frodo,  sam,  pippin  and  merry  at  weathertop.    a  BOMB  could  have  gone  off  right  next  to  estella  and  she  might  not  even  have  noticed…  her  brown  eyes  devoured  the  familiar  words  and  their  mind  disappeared  off  into  middle  earth.

Arden had been putting off stocking the nursery with books, primarily because she wanted to save it as a reward for doing other less exciting but infinitely more practical tasks, like buying a carseat or setting up baby monitors. But her little cottage on Karme Farms now held a fully painted nursery with a functional crib and baby monitors and her orange Ford Escape now boasted a carseat, complete with a ‘baby on board’ sticker on her rear mirrors. 

She saw them lost in the wonder of Tolkein and smiled warmly. She hated to interrupt such an excellent book, but the question was burning. It seemed Arden was content to seek baby advice from anyone who looked remotely friendly these days. 

“I’m so sorry to bother you-  how young were you when you started on Tolkein? I’m trying to decide if Lord of the Rings is a nursery friendly book or if I’m just stocking the nursery with my old favorites. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with Goodnight Moon or anything like that, but I figured if babies benefit from Beethoven, then maybe they might benefit from higher quality literature, you know?” Arden was rambling now, face flushing in embarrassment. What had she been thinking, approaching a stranger like this?

They did have a lot of different animals come through the vet clinic and if the little baby got to see them all, they would be an animal lover in no time. It was a good thing they didn’t get a lot of dangerous animals these days. Harlow smiled, glad to see them loosening up. They had told them a bit of about what had happened and they could only imagine how difficult it was to move on from all of it. A little flirting with someone who wouldn’t push it was a good way to work on it. 

“I’m sorry to say but I can’t do that. I’m naturally this lovable,” they replied, their grin growing a bit. It was their favorite thing to be liked so there was nothing that would make them change that in a hurry. “You can if you want, but I think they’ll be more interested in talking to you if you do.” 

“What a cross to bear,” Arden smiles. “A wonder how you manage to even stand up straight with such a burden.” 

Arden laughs and their face flushes. “I highly doubt it. You know me. I’m not exactly the most sociable. I can get along just fine, but I’m never someone’s first pick to approach.” They fidget with their dress now, a hand brushing along their belly. Is it to soothe them or the baby? Hard to tell. Maybe a bit of both.

hidden away in the dark drapery and covered cage is NYNAEVIA, her eastern pygmy possum —- nocturnal nature making it slightly more annoying for the marsupial when it came to a trip to the vet.  however, being that calista was one of few who (legally) owned a native animal as a domestic pet, she had become well known at the veterinary clinic.   they sit on the chair next to the shiny, sterile vet counter in the exam room —- scrolling through her onlyfans statistics and scheduled posts.  “come in,” calista calls, looking up, “sorry for the late appointment, it’s nynaevia; just coming in for our quarterly check up… going into WINTER and all, it rarely gets cold enough for her to want to do the semi-hibernate thing,” she can hear the little movement inside the cage, probably enjoy the seed mix that cali had placed in there.

Arden smiles brightly when they realize it’s Nynaevia and Calista. Calista is one of the more responsible pet parents in the practice- partially driven by necessity owning an unusual pet. The paperwork and permits involved alone could intimidate those of weaker resolve. 

“No need to apologize. We keep evening hours for visits just like this. Plus, I’ll never complain about seeing my favorite marsupial.” 

“How have you both been?” They ask as they go to uncover the cage.

“Battle scar, huh? I didn’t peg you as the dramatic type.” Mysha laughs lightly, clearly relieved that she didn’t cause any real harm. She knew how her temper could get the better of her but the woman say that as channeling her energy into doing something that mattered. “Sometimes you have to be…assertive to get your point across. The friendly fire is never intentional.” On the comment of her bad side, she shrugs in agreement. She was a force to be reckoned with. “I can’t imagine anyone not liking you Arden. If they do you can send them my way.” Their reaction makes her grin as she swipes up another piece of trash, this time swiftly putting it in the bag. “Old? You’re joking. Unless you’re secretly seventy three and just not telling me something.”

“Who’s dramatic?” Arden smiles. “I am being perfectly serious that I am not bringing home any scars, courtesy of one angry Mysha. It is a mere statement of fact. No dramatic exaggeration here.” 

"What? Send them to you for the crime of not wanting to be my friend? You're kind, but I think I'll let half the island rest peacefully rather than expose them to your raw power." Arden winks. "When you're in your mid thirties, young grasshopper, you'll value the peace and quiet too."/p>

Location: Vulcan’s Auto Shop

Time: Evening

The shop was empty. It was one of those slow shifts that meant the guys could go out to mess around and Daiyu would be in charge of any new customers that would come in and any last minute repairs. Luckily, they had none, and since it was raining, no customers were really coming in. Hence.. air bass guitar and singing alone like a fool.

“City’s breaking down on a camel’s back! They just have to go, ‘cause they don’t know wack! So while you fill the streets, it’s appealing to see! You won’t get out the county, 'cause you’re bad and free!”

She heard someone enter and stopped, putting down her makeshift microphone. “Hi! Welcome to Vulcan’s! How can I help?”

Arden enters the shop tentatively, a bit embarrassed. She knew next to nothing about her old Jeep Wrangler except how to put gas in it, but all she knew was that it stalled all the time now. It seemed to start back up according to its own whims, regardless of what she did. 

She’s a bit soaked from the rain- her umbrella forgotten back at the farm- and she wrings out her hair and sweater in the doorway first. 

“Hey, I’m so sorry to be a bother. But are you able to take a look at my Jeep? It keeps stalling and I’m just hopeless with cars.” She probably shouldn’t admit that to a mechanic, but this one seems kind enough. At least, she didn’t expect a conniving mechanic to have to pause their Gorillaz concert to help her.

Riot was scratching the back of L.A’s head when the veterinarian entered the room. Lady perked up but otherwise didn’t move from her spot. Riot lets out a sigh before turning to the doctor. “Towards the end of our walks I like to let her off her the leash so she can sprint around and get herself tired. Well, my girl here is as clumsy as she is fast and took a pretty hard tumble down the hill. At first she seemed fine but she’s been limping to avoid putting pressure on her front right paw.”

She was also able to sense the paw becoming her dog’s weak point but she keeps that to herself.

Arden’s smile does not falter, but eases as they approach. Lady is a beautiful dog, but in truth, Arden has never met an ugly pet. “How long ago was the tumble?” Arden is always careful to use the pet parent’s own words. It’s a way to show they were listening, sure, but also it just ensured there was no confusion between the two of them. 

“If it’s all right with you, I’ll start by looking at the other paws first just in case it’s tender to touch. Is Lady still eating and drinking okay? Is her energy level about the same aside from the limp?”

     arsyn turns around at the sound of the cheery voice entering the room, their eyes landing on the vet. “ so, uh… i found this cat on the side of the road and it… well, it looks like it’s in pretty rough shape. ” arsyn was certainly not known for helping out anyone, and nor will that ever be their reputation. but animals ? animals were different. they’re helpless, and besides… it’s mostly humans in the first place that put them in such vulnerable positions. anyway, how could they just walk past a sick cat and go on with their day ? “ so.. i figured i’d come here. ” not so used to doing good deeds, though, so it felt super fucking weird on their skin. god, i need to ruin someone’s day after this to restore the balance. 

Arden nods and sets the clipboard down, listening intently as they slowly approaches the grey and white cat that looks like they’ve had better days. “Well hello, handsome,” Arden speaks softly, soothingly, as they approach. 

“Well, you did the right thing by bringing him here. I’m immensely grateful. We’ve got a charity fund, so we can take care of the costs of a check up and whatever else we find out.” But the grey cat looks at Arsyn expectantly. 

“But it looks like you’ve made a friend, if you don’t mind my saying it.” They pick up the cat gingerly, humming softly as they inspect their eyes, ears, and gently press on their belly. Poor thing is scraped up, but nothing irreversible. 

Thank heavens.

Arden goes beet red, sputtering at the question. "A baby daddy? Really? You think that is all I'm looking for?" Arden fumes. "I came to Magnetic Island for a fresh start. Not to procure a baby daddy." They spit the word with all the venom I can muster.

"That's not a very fair question, you know. There are still so many people I've barely met. And besides, you didn't specify romantic attraction." Arden is pleased with themselves for navigating the qustion sufficiently. "I'm attracted to Harlow's warmth and kindness, obviously. Linna is kind and intelligent."

“Is it cheating to say the baby? I mean, we’re already inseparable. Besides, I don’t think I could love anybody if I couldn’t get away from them for a whole three days. I’m way too introverted for that.”

     adding   for   context;   ❝my   mother   is   the   same,❞  — &  she   then   passed   arden   a   $10   note,   answering   the   question; ❝well,   i’ve   been   here   almost   a   year   now…   and   i   started   the   stall   within   a   few   weeks   of   moving.   so…   a   good   long   while   now,   it’s   my   pride   and   joy.      i   grew   up   on   the   road   a   lot,   and   i   was   raised   in   communities   like   the   ones   here   in   the   agora;   it’s   one   of   my   favourite   places   to   be.   i’d   be   happy   to   tell   you   some   cool   and   peaceful  spots…   maybe   saving   the   cliff-jumping   ‘til   AFTER   the   baby,❞   a   laugh   as   the   breeze   blew   in   cool   from   the   nearby   bay.

“I’ll look forward to visiting the whispering willow then, Linna.” Arden says it, sincerity evident in her voice. They have never made promises lightly and are not about to start now. But at Linna’s premonition? prophecy? Arden finds themselves tearing up. It’s the most encouraging thing anyone has said to Arden in a while and they’re embarrassed by how easily they are moved.

Arden reaches for both of Linna’s hands, squeezing them gently. “Thank you, Linna. That means more than you could ever know.”  

“And I would love a tour guide. I’ve mostly been spending my time at either the clinic or Karme. Maybe I could trade you a visit for any fur babies you might have in exchange for a tour?” Arden laughs, grateful for the lightening of the subject, “yes, I imagine my OB GYN would be furious to find out about cliff jumping.”

Arden grabs the clipboard from outside of the exam room. So what if it’s old school? They prefer writing notes with a pen as opposed to typing. It’s easier to maintain eye contact with a worried fur parent over a clipboard then it’s a computer.

"Knock knock," It's an insufferable habit, they know, but so many pets startle or begin to tense if they hear a knock on wood. It's their job to make this as easy as possible on all parties. "So, I'm sure nobody wants to spend their Tuesday night at the clinic just for fun, so what's bringing you here today?" Arden's all easy smiles as they enter the room.
