I'm primarily interested in how Peter Gallagher establishes symbols through his works in order to cram stories into a single panel (excepting Sunday spreads, of course). Charles Schulz created a cast of characters that had distinct gimmicks that would fast track you into the "themes" of a strip. Bushmiller created incredibly dynamic compositions to highlight the action and emotions of the characters so nearly no words needed. Watterson combined a deep understanding of kids and philosophy with strong facial expressions and gestures to make a Real Human Boy come alive on the page.

Gallagher pulls from a pool of symbols he developed (helmets, bubbles, headsits, etc) and combines them with symbols common to Americana. This creates little flash panels of story where you can really rub the elements together to see what sparks and what catches flame. you'll often see people call Heathcliff random or that there's no punchlines or "fidelity you're doing to much" but i think there's a lot of beauty to be found in approaching the comics like they really mean something. And that's why we are here, that's why YOU are here. Come with me. To Heathcliff.

The Heathcliff Discord was highly alarmed by the weird apron Grandpa Nutgob is wearing. It's odd to hang around the arms instead of the neck. Has anyone seen an apron like that? you're not here to give fabric opinions though. let's talk about Heathcliff:

it's not very often that Heathcliff is drawn small. sometimes it's because there's a much larger subject in frame forcing the perspective to shrink them down, sometimes it's because we have a wide landscape. one other way is when Heathcliff is afraid.

now, in these two examples his eyes are wide open showing his alarm and if today's panel he is casual. but the idea remains. it is a candle meant to scare him away. you will notice that he is significantly smaller than the candle in this panel, perspective wise. he is minimized within the space of the page. the candle is shrinking his presence which is what the candle is for, to keep the cat away.

as usual with Grandma and the neighbor lady, you know what was said right before this event which was "hey what is that candle for?" and getting the standard response for the first handle which is citronella to keep mosquitoes away. and then we have this comic where she answers the other half: this one keeps cats away.

I want you to notice how everyone is looking at the candles except for Iggy (and Grandpa nutlick but he's busy at the grill, he already knows about the candle). he is looking at his cat. there's some sort of emotion there right, whether it's guilt over the way his family is treating the cat right now, purchasing items specifically to make him uncomfortable in a space, whether it's solidarity where he's trying to convey solace to his abandoned cat.

what's interesting is that they would not have this problem if they were ethical cat owners. he's an outside cat. they care for and maintain an outside cat. it's crazy, keep your cat indoors. you let him outside so that he can be with you while you're eating but you buy a candle to keep him from being near you while you're eating. make it make sense! it's more likely now that he will wander off somewhere and wreak havoc upon the local ecology because he cannot commune with his people here at the table.

honest question: with these tube guys scare you away from a lemonade stand? or would they draw you closer in?

I think what we are seeing here is clientele selection. the same way you can put a pride flag in your window to scare away conservatives, these big screaming tube guys keep away the normies. this lemonade is only for the people who can handle a weird advertising gimmick.

notice how Heathcliff doesn't seem upset, we don't have evidence of how business is going aside from the pitcher being 90% full and that doesn't indicate much because we don't know what his thought file looks like. notice how there are no cups on the counter, did he sell out or are they just stored underneath somewhere? would he still be set up like this if he's not getting business?

If you go all the way back to beef week (click), you can see that he's a very shrewd salesman. he set up six days of marketing to absolutely thrash his competition during sales time. maybe the big scary inflatable monster guys are a carefully selected strategy. I think his pot of lemonade is the gold at the end of the rainbow if you're willing to follow the scary rainbow to its end. Iggy did.

calling the segment semi daily actually does help because I can always look at it and say oh yeah the semi is surving a dual purpose for Semiotics and "partially daily." it's kind of stupid that our brains can be hacked so simply

and I look at all the other Heathcliff posters in the Heathcliff discord server and I see their consistency and I just have to remind myself the normal amount of time that someone spend writing detailed Heathcliff analysis is zero minutes. I wonder how much it would cost to get a giant Heathcliff bust to hang on my wall...? let's talk about heathcliff:

there's a certain image being evoked with the contemplative fireplace comics. it calls to mind Ernest Hemingway, fictional huntsmen, and wealthy but tortured individuals. an older man thoughtfully nursing a glass of whiskey as he remembers the circumstances of a hunt, the one framed on his wall over the fireplace. as an idea, it's particularly powerful because you have a source of light and heat bathing the front of an individual but keeping their back in shadow. you get warmth of memory and the chill of time in one concept. you will note that on today's comic Gallagher has gone out of his way to generate a strong Shadow behind our cat. it intensifies that symbolic expression without having to drastically alter the standard color and shading scheme

we have many examples of Heathcliff interfacing with this archetype

he does most of his thinking here. something that does not get addressed in any of these comics it's what exactly he's contemplating as he stares into the fire and lets it warm him. if you look carefully, the people are typically standing before a darkened doorway and the shading line cover ambiguously around them, as if there's an invisible aura keeping it at bay. Heathcliff stands directly in the light and therefore the shadow doesn't just linger around him but physically connects and emerges from him. this is also part of that archetypal idea, the dark past of the huntsman or debutante or the artist or whoever is in the position at the time.

sometimes there's a trophy of a past meal on the wall and sometimes it's Heathcliff himself. how does it affect the image to have Heathcliff contemplating himself instead of a trophy when reckoning with his past and his memories? it's extremely important that his face is never visible in any of these panels, that he's always facing away from us. we don't get to see in his expression, we don't know if he is wearing his feelings, he just see his darkened back. how does the flavor change when there's nothing on the mantle of the fireplace and what if the only thing there is a clock? what kind of thoughts are you putting in his head as you read the images?

and this, this one right here. how does this one taste, there is no fire, there is no warmth. rather than a taxidermied trophy made to preserve the image of life, it is merely the bleached bones of a feast. there's no shadows stretching behind, there's no drinks. it is just the Stark reality that there was a fish and it was eaten and now there's nothing. the memory of the meal doesn't even kindle a flame. we don't even get the line shading for the room in the back. it's a completely different vibe

you have to respect the dedication, he’s clearly practicing with both hands, as far back as 2006. we’ve seen him use all kinds of crazy stuff to catch chihuahuas, he works alongside animal control in the literal Chihuahua division. he’s used magic to wrangle them. he’s actually really good at this.

I really think he is training his non-dominant hand for lack of other challenges at this point.

it’s not exactly a frequent trend but there is a history of chihuahuas as baseball analogs in the comic.

the joke concept seems to be developing as a connection between how small Chihuahuas tend to be and the relatively small size of a baseball. the situation from today, consider how you have to bend down to pick up a chihuahua and how similar it is to bending down to catch a ground ball. they are so small in light that you could practically play catch with them if you wanted to. I’m imagining batting to practice helps catch chihuahuas because you have to develop the eye for following something that is small and startlingly fast.

I mean these puppies are so tiny that even the mice can wrangle them in. normal nets don’t work. they live in the same spaces that mice can. Gallagher is conveying the size of the Chihuahua through relation rather than by directly drawing them at the same size as a baseball. the chihuahua has been abstracted so far from reality that it is smaller than a mouse yet it is still drawn on page proportionally the same size as a Chihuahua probably should be.

we don't have time for a cold open, chat. I'm going to tell you a story. about art, inspiration, and substitution.

Heathcliff has been painting and sculpting robot nudes at least since 2018. he's been exploring this subject for 8 years now. if you go digging, you can see other comics where people struggle reconciling the idea of a naked robot whenever he displays his artwork but that's not our discussion point. we are going to examine the two most important women in heathcliffs life: Grandma Nutmeg and Sonja

you see, Heathcliff has a long-term situationship with Sonja. they've known each other basically since the beginning and they are always chasing each other but it's not exactly what you would call a dedicated monogamous relationship. I don't even think they are official. so it's no surprise that Heathcliff the artist sees a dedicated area for one of his artistic subjects and he gets a little curious. at first, the idea is so foreign and repulsive that he walks away in disgust. but that doesn't stop him from producing his robot nudes.

he even starts incorporating Sonja into his process, into the creation and display of his work. in order to express a new robot, without a direct nude reference in front of him, he works to translate Sonja into the robotic form. he is projecting a naked robot onto his will-they-won't-they. as he approaches the art gallery, you can see how he is eating up the attention, how he is being affected by success.

this is how we end up at today's comic strip. rather than being present and loving with his girlfriend, he is obsessing over the robotic image that he projects onto her. and we know he did not use to think this way, he seems to keep a firm separation the first time they are strolling with their robots together but it really does seem like his experience at the beach changed his appraisal of the robot form.

as for Grandma nutmeg, she serves as the explainer for the feelings of Sonja , a source of sympathy and a voice for the voiceless.

she also serves as the sort of original sin. there are panels where the robots do not have fig leaves over their crotches. she is the one who puts the initial concept of nudity onto the form of a created life, literally mirroring the outcome of the original sin. we see that play out here with Heathcliff gaining the knowledge of true robot nudity at a natural environment rather than the sterile studio space of his art. the image never leaves his mind and he keeps working to refine his art over and over through the years and eventually fully supplants his girlfriend's identity in his own mind.

this is actually the earliest example I think I have in my little compilation here and it is one of the ones with no leaf.

it's truly a messy situation, it reflects a particular reality of heartbreak among artists and getting truly damagingly lost in the sauce.

As someone who calls people of all genders bro sometimes and is realizing that I shouldn’t do that and will be not doing that going forward, I definitely think that’s what that is kind of a symbol of— that’s *why* the term of casual address is gendered. It is easier to let people be in roles on one side of the line in the sand than to accept that the line can be broken.

They’re not consciously intending to say that she’s in the role of a man (typically) but … that is more or less what’s going on.

For the purposes of the conversation, she is a “bro” and there are many reasons that term is gendered. I would say that they might consider the term gender neutrally consciously. But deep down they use the male term “gender neutrally” because they see the idea of “friendly conversation partner” associated with gendered terms of address of their gender. Because that is the initial context. So yea, they see her as one of the boys in that scenario.

hey we were just talking about cultural exchange yesterday! this ball is going to work our core for just a little bit longer, it seems! let's talk about Heathcliff:

last time we had Bros sharing a meal and chatting it up, today we have Heathcliff learning a trick from Tigger and seemingly being a bit of a natural at it. previously, they were engaging in one of heathcliff's cultural activities which is the walk n talk. it's what he does with a lot of the guest stars on his strips.

to continue yesterday's thought, we have a little semantic play here again with birds of a feather, especially considering it is being said by birds. aliens do not have the concept of Bros but birds do. they are making the connection, drawing the line between the two terms.

a closer examination of birds of a feather also gives us something to chew on because what birds do flock together? those of the same species typically. and we are seeing the connection between two yellow birds talking about this and observing it in two orange cats. even if there is not a direct bloodline connection, there is a morphological one and these cats can both engage in the same activities as each other and they can engage in them at a similar level.

this almost seems a refutation of what the alien said yesterday, for if this can be bros, how is that not what you experience traveling the Galaxy with your alien of a feather? and we will likely never get an answer. it's hard to cross that cultural gap when the distance is so vast but Heathcliff seems to always be trying

I have run into so much fun juicy stuff to talk about regarding this alien as I have done my research for today's post. but none of that for today, you are here not for the compelling cast but the semi daily. let's talk about heathcliff:

part of the reason I had to go digging was that I needed to find the ray gun comic. this ray gun comic right here.

Heathcliff and space aliens are always doing a little cultural exchange like this over garbage. it's always a delight to see the spacefolk on an overturned can.

Part of the cultural exchange is the things that we take for granted. "oh you guys don't have Ray guns? I would hate to not be able to zap a mother fucker." is, in my opinion, the vibe I get from them here. on today's comic, Heathcliff is sharing something with the alien, the concept of being bros. at first I was digging through the archives assuming that I would consistently see the alien alone but that's not true. not only are there two aliens in the UFO on one of the New Year's panels but they've done two-man heists of garbage before.

no, the alien is unfamiliar because the sense of camaraderie, of sharing a meal and each other's company in this sort of intimate familial way is the foreign concept. it makes the previous appearance of two aliens a bit more sad, to realize they are not tightly bonded that way. simply co-workers I imagine.

but we still haven't gotten to the meat of what I wanted to discuss which is what is bro? I've made an assumption based on my interpretation of the comics up to this point, maybe the alien really is saying there are no "male siblings" because we have to ask. what is bro? it shows up all the time in Gallagher's heathcliffs, prominently with fish, helmets, a chorus of characters chanting it. is it bro when you are eating food with someone? is it bro when you are flying through the galaxy with them? is it bro when you have the same mom? the answer is no to all of these. because bro is a feeling, it is unique and individual between any two bros.

Take the saying "You're like a brother to me"

What is a brother like? Is that good? Some people fucking hate their brothers and want to kill them. 'Brother' is such a weird idea tied up in biological connection but the more diminutive Bro manages to shed some of that baggage and gesture at a larger idea despite being smaller in form. note that the casual form of it makes it less clinical and more humanizing. but note i said in only sheds some.

to get back to cultural exchange, it has been difficult to avoid gendering this alien because the presence of the word bro inherently masculinizes. imagine if the explanation was not tied to the word bro at all, what if instead the question was hey do you have "close emotional bonds with people that are not romantic but leave to situations similar to eating meals together and talking about the universe? I wonder if the aliens answer would have been different we had not approached with this word. because bro does carry all of the meanings that I've said above, it does convey something unique that the word brother does not capture, it can be more universally applying. but all of that is within the context of our culture. this is, of course, the fundamental flaw of all language.

Darmok of Star Trek the next generation Fame highlights the concept of the cultural basis of language but doesn't really address the way that our language is exactly the same way. every single space race should have this trouble with the universal translator. one of the reasons etymology is so fascinating as a subject is that you start to learn just how tied up our language is in societal concepts rather than concrete reference and that we don't even know what we're saying most of the time, not really. I'm sure all of this relates back to the comic somehow. I'm going to waive my fingers and clap and you will wake up believing that I established a conclusion. or that anything I said was Coherent first place

every time the ham car saga gets an update, I think about it all day. it's so funny to me how infamous the original "he's going way over the ham limit" comic has become. it's not even that old yet and it has become emblematic of the way non-heathcliff fans engage with the comic

I mean this was just last year. it hasn't even been a full calendar since the original comic got posted. anyway, let's talk about heathcliff:

whenever you are, any of my readers who drive, cruising along the road and someone is giving off the vibes that they are driving angry, what are the clues you used to determine that? what's the constellation of behaviors that you intuitively interpret as someone being mad about the street?

if we go back and look at today's panel, are those symptoms apparent? we can see that Heathcliff has an extra line on his face, one more than normal which is notable. it looks like his brow is furrowed. he has the dust behind his vehicle, the same dust from the origin that indicated he was going way over the ham limit. a thought bubble that contains expletives.

this is where I want to start talking about broader concepts. because I think it's interesting that the expletives are portrayed in a thought bubble. in Heathcliff comics, birds are often people watching (the way people in real life bird watch), the bird is looking at Heathcliff driving by with a furrowed brow, no helmet, kicking up dust, and is coming to the determination that Heathcliff is upset but can the birds see the angry thoughts in the thought bubble? is the bird a mind reader? or are they 'seeing' anger in the dust clouds? do they see the puff of smoke and insert the angry thoughts themself?

I work as a courier driving nearly 300 miles a day, there are a million little things that clue me into the mindset of a given driver but ultimately it is something I am projecting on to them because I don't know their circumstances. it could be a lapse in attention or could be that they are responding to an emergency or any number of things. I also project road rage onto the dust clouds other drivers kick up.

typically when it comes to road rage, we get more of a narrative of what circumstances made someone angry in their car but in this case we get nothing. just whatever this bird is telling us and the construct of a comics thought bubble. we have a meditation on the limits of our own perspective when we observe others

this comic also gives us another angle on ham combinatorics:

in the initial setup, ham is substituted in for the word speed and also for a car. we also have the word ham substituting for road in this comic.

the electric ham gives us a verbal substitution for car, we see that cheese and yam are not viable word substitutions in heathcliff but they can act as physical substitutions for car to cheese and car to yam. we have yet to see ham become a physical substitute for the road and we don't have a visual connection between ham and speed, just the verbal one

that electric yam also gives us an interesting idea, there are actual letters representing the sound, there are also no dust clouds. so having a cloud with expletives in it tickles something in my brain. I'm sure I will have an update to this post later today after I teased out what I and feeling and put it into words. I will end this post with a non-conclusion to encourage myself to come back
