The Ones Blessed By Stars
💫💫 Sorrel started her days as just a simple loner, living day to day with her parents raising her on how to be a survivor. One day, she decided that she was old enough to strike out on her own and carve her own place in the world that was just waiting to be explored. With an emotional goodbye to her parents, she set off, tail held high and a smile on her face.
As she traveled, she began to pick up stories in passing. She was already ready for a good story, but more often than not she was hearing rumors of so called “clans,” large communities of cats living together under a set of steadfast rules shaping who they were. It was a foreign idea to her, being raised by loner parents who shied away from any concept of a group mentality. None of it sounded bad, per say, just new and intriguing. It quickly became something that was resting in the back of her mind, beside all of the other far fetched tales she heard from cats much like herself.
A quiet morning was interrupted when she was met by a friendly torbie called Brindle, a loner like herself. The two enjoyed each other’s company, and opted to travel together across the open landscape, both growing tired of the rather lonely life sported by a lone cat. They shared their stories and what they’ve seen across their travels, and grew all the more closer. One of the most commonly discussed thought was, once again, these clans. Both she-cats had considered the idea of building their own clan, an open community to help support loners like themselves, and making a family of their own. It was a daunting challenge, for sure, though they never outright dismissed it all together. That was, until one fateful night. Sorrel was awoken by a faint twinkling sound in her ear. Blinking away her drowsiness, she noticed what looked like a star, floating just a few tail-lengths ahead of her. It had an inexplicable inviting light to it, as if silently calling out to her. Rising from the tangle of roots her and Brindle had settled down into for the night, she approached the star and watched as it floated back into its refuge in the sky. In front of her appeared a new one; and another, and another, making a path up the hill before her. She followed the trail until she reached the top of the hill, which opened up into a clearing full of white clovers.
In the very center sat what appeared to be a cat, though something about it felt more ancient and cryptic, like it didn’t quite belong there. It was large, with tufted ears, big paws, and a short tail. More stars danced around it, and a circle of dim light lit the ground beneath its paws.
“Come closer, young one,” It spoke to her, though its mouth was unmoving. “There is nothing to fear.” Sorrel obeyed, walking forward and stopping just a tail-length away. A bit hesitantly, she asked, “Who are you?” The cat blinked once, looking up to the sky. “The past. The future. The lost. The found,” It said gently; “But most importantly,” Its gaze lowered back towards the ginger she-cat, “I will be your guidance.” It rose to its paws, taking one step forward. As if on command, new cats began to stream forward from behind it, their bodies transparent and seemingly made of glittering stars. It watched on with a gentle face as they brushed past Sorrel and disappeared into the sky, leaving the surprised she-cat with a feeling of pure wonder and awe.
“Your destiny is larger than you think,’ It began. “You hold the stars deep within yourself. With this power, I would like to give you a new name, if you are willing to accept.” Its tone did not sound forceful as one would think, instead holding an edge of sympathy. It was not a simple task for one cat to uphold, of course. Sorrel looked up at the stars and moon, the light beneath the other cat’s paws, and the tiny blinking stars that seemed to dance across its coat. A sudden surge of power rose in her chest. If this is what her destiny was to be, than that’s what she would do.
“I accept,” She said strongly, standing tall with a newly found purpose. The other had a low purr rise in its throat. “Already, you show the prowess of a cat fit to be a leader. You will be known as Sorrelstar. And with this name, I grant you the lives of those long passed.” It stepped forward to touch its nose to the appointed leader’s. A surge of feeling rushed through Sorrelstar’s body. Fire, ice, heartbreak, unconditional love. She would have fallen off her paws if it weren’t for the grounding force of the cat before her. It felt like she was living all of those lives in that one moment.
When the cat stepped back, it bowed its head to her. “You will do great things for this world, Sorrelstar. If you ever feel lost, weary, or simply in need of someone to talk to,” It paused to lift its head again to meet her with its warm eyes, “remember to look to the stars. Good luck, young leader.” With a final parting blink, it stepped into her, through her, and left stars glittering on the ginger cat’s pelt.
Now donning the blessing of the stars themselves, Sorrelstar began her path on the long journey of what would become HeatherClan’s legacy.
