History of Atmos by Archivist Archimedes, Article I: Creation of Atmos
Long before the dawn of time, long before the rise of Atmos, there was only the great Yuoh, Erril Lumis. He lay sleeping among stars, adrift in the endless expanse of the Far Realm. The things that dwelled in the darkness offered the only company. He'd been asleep for many eons, the everlasting madness of his eternal existence wearing at his mind and will.
That was until one day, he had a thought. That thought became a dream, and that dream flowed through him until he finally awoke. When Erril's spirit did finally resurface, he found that his carapace had become a mighty sphere of gray rock. Upon this sphere rose an impressive city of silver and gold, ruled over by a race of mortal beings that will be referred to herein as the Precursors. They originated from another realm altogether, refugees from some great apocalypse in the distant past. The strongest among them, a wizard by the name of Ferjeen, was the first to make contact with Erril. They became fast friends, and Erril grew a great amount of compassion for the Precursors and their fair city.
But, as all things end, so did this era of peace and prosperity for the Yuoh. A great monster rose from the depths, one of the dwellers of darkness manifesting a form of terror and evil. This monster was Hadar, the Dark Hunger, a dying star who wished to feed upon the life force of the Precursors. With insatiable gluttony Hadar fell upon the city, ripping and tearing through it mercilessly.
In order to combat Hadar, Erril left his holy carapace for a lesser form made in the image of the Precursors, the very same form he used to befriend them many years prior. In that form he was known as the divine jester, Leland. Leland and Ferjeen confronted Hadar in the center of the city, only to discover that Hadar had brought an army of his dark children with him: the Primordial Demons. Fighting together, Leland and Ferjeen managed to slay the Primordials, the blood of their sworn enemies soaking the earth and painting the streets red. Finally, they dueled Hadar in a fierce battle that lasted twelve days and twelve nights. The powerful duo eventually emerged victorious, banishing Hadar to the void whence he came. The only remnant left of the dark star was his unholy glaive, Armageddon. During the battle, the glaive had been thrown so ferociously that it had pierced the surface and become buried deep within the cityās heart. The corrupted bladeās handle, made of ancient wood fed by the blood of the Primordials, would one day grow to breach the surface and become the Tree of Eve.
During the battle, almost all of the Precursors were slain, excluding Ferjeen and a select few others. Erril grieved at the loss of his favored mortals and wept in sorrow for many days. In his grief-stricken state, Erril sacrificed a large portion of his power to construct a massive protective barrier around Atmos, known today as the Multiversal Sphere. This sacrifice cost him his greater form, leaving him only the form of Leland the Jester and leaving Atmos as an independent and inanimate world. He formed the barrier by creating Solaris, a star capable of casting light upon half of Atmos. The light of Solaris turned the worldās equator into a magic circle, designed specifically to power the shield. As long as Solaris remains lit, nothing can enter the Atmosian Cosmos uninvited.
The remaining bodies of rock scattered through the space within the sphere eventually coalesced to become Atmosās six moons. Two of the moons already hosted life originating from the Far Realm: the Rathans of Rathan and the Scrimbopulans of Halcia. Neither race was of any concern to Erril, as the Rathans were a primitive and feudal society, and the Scrimbopulans were an advanced but peaceful one.
After the creation of the Multiversal Sphere and the forming of the moons, Erril looked down upon Atmos, pondering its future. He found it to be a dull and lifeless place, the opposite of what it was before the invasion of Hadar.
Erril began to seed the world with life. He drowned the world with water, attempting to wash away the taint left behind by Hadarās influence. He then pulled land from the sea, raising the mountains and plains from the depths. He formed three continents: Hellreach to the south, Frostfall to the north, and the Twilight Lands along the equator. He then seeded each continent with plants and animals of their own, preparing them for his final creation: the mortal races. He gifted the Twilight Lands to the elven mages, Frostfall to the kings of men, Hellreach to the tiefling sultans and Thri-kreen queens, and the Underdark to the Wyrms destined to become Dwarves.
Erril looked down once more at the world of his own creation, and decided to give the mortal races one last gift: free will, uncontrolled by an omniscient being such as he. Erril ascended to Solaris, building a palace of gold upon the starās surface to be his final destination. Erril then created two beings in his likeness to act as guardians and protectors of Atmos, and sent them down from the heavens to watch over the mortal races. These two beings, the Zaohsu, became known as Otheron and Samael. Although the Zaohsu were intended to be guardians and protectors, their destiny would one day lead them to a much darker fateā¦
