My friend Cem (“gem”) Oztamur came to America when he was 8 years old from Izmir Turkey. His story is very different from the “typical” immigration story’s we think about as Americans and pretty cool. When he was 8 years old his mom went to work, while working she saw an add on her computer it was a lottery pretty much to win a green card. She wanted to win one for her and her family so (For me being born and raised in the states I have never seen or heard of a green card lottery which shows me a vast difference on what gets promoted or advertised in different countries.) she applied. Not thinking anything of it, a couple weeks later she received news that she won!! Her and her immediate family including 3 kids all moved over to America. Cem says that “life there is way harder than being here” the price and inflation of living has rocketed tremendously. When he was living in turkey 1 U.S. dollar would exchange for 1.5 lira and now the exchange is a total of 18.7 lira for 1 dollar.
Some of the push and pulls Cem faced was that the education was not good and America had better schools. There were a better choice for jobs and making money and in turkey there was low pay. Lawyers and doctors went to Europe and if in turkey they had to Uber.
His experience since he moved to America he would say was “good” he learned English, and made new friends. When he first came he wanted to go back he missed his family and his friends. He only goes back to Turkey on vacation for about 3 months. Another barrier his family faces was trying to find jobs when they first got here. He says that if he had stayed in Izmir his life would be harder now. He says moving was a good decision.
