"Comet Donati", colour lithograph by Philippe Benoist, from Amédée Guillemin's Le Ciel (1877).
Trying very hard not to be cynical about this Fourth of July because my mother is in town, and has gathered the whole family to celebrate.
Because while my father’s family has been in South Carolina since it was Pangaea (or somewhere around there) my mother is only second generation American. She grew up in an Assimilate First household which certainly had its own trauma (she didn’t and doesn’t speak Polish, the languages of her grandmothers and aunts) but she did grow up in a country where she loudly protested the government as a teenager, became a lawyer to fight the government (and later healthcare companies) and who believes so hard in the American Dream for her daughters and granddaughters. She believes we, The People, will tear down totalitarianism, that we’ll go through a bloodless revolution, that we’ll come out on the other side. And she firmly believes that it’s our duty to fight for that right, claiming that this is her land just as much as it is any DAR descendent’s, those bitches that threw rocks at her mother when she got off the boat.
And it would do well for me to keep that hope, even if I don’t believe in it.

“Love,” Joe Lon said, “is listening to your wife rant about a writer’s piss poor attempt to write violence like Harry Crews.”
“Oh yes, Baby,” she cried, “oh yes”
“But True Love,” he said, “Goddamn True Love is listening as she grabs her copy of A Feast of Snakes and reads out loud passage after passage in a hiss whisper, trying not to wake the baby sleeping in the other room.
brooch from Vienna, dating approximately between 1898 and 1900.
Also I am the portrait of restraint because today on my flight, the woman sitting across from me told me my two year daughter did well but “she needs to get that binky out of her mouth so people can understand her” and I DID NOT POINT OUT TO THIS WOMAN THAT SHE HAD SPENT THE ENTIRE FLIGHT WATCHING STRAIGHT PORN—WITH THE SOUND ON—ON A LAPTOP SHE REFUSED TO STOW DURING TAKE OFF OR LANDING, HAD THREE DRINKS IN THAT HOUR AND ASKED FOR AN ADDITIONAL FOUR—FOUR!!— SNACKS SO I DO NOT RESPECT HER OPINIONS ON PARENTING.
Instead I looked at my daughter and said “that’s so silly!” And ignored that bitch while making my daughter laugh.

Will always have a complicated relationship to the term “Southern Gothic” because things aren’t “gothic” when they’re true.
A series of Juneteenth celebratory wagons in the early 1900s, in Houston, Austin and Corpus Christi.
For the past 6.5 years, I’ve had a tarot advice column and yesterday I answered a question from a friend who in the 20 years I’ve known him, I’ve never pulled cards for.
I gave him his answer and then told him I’d give him a full reading for free because I think he needs one and and he replied with “I’m so excited!😆 This is fun!”
And, I don’t know how to phase it to him that “excited” and “fun” are, uh, not the adjectives I would use.
