Here is a minute long recording of my sound sculpture in action. I particularly like how crisp the higher frequencies sound, and the way that the swinging bottles seem to attempt to find a rhythm

Here is a 30 second visual example of my sculpture in action. I am inside so there is no wind or rain but with a gentle push & the bottles partially filled the idea is clear. Bottles played by nature, generating their own sounds and structure

Photographic evidence of my sound sculpture, built for the P3 module of my university course. Part instillation, part generative instrument, every element of this creation was reclaimed from the roadside in Brighton, primarily on Newhaven Street though the table was taken on Finsbury Road. Even the blanket, which I used solely for visually aesthetic purposes, was taken from a waste bin.

In the initial version of this sculpture I used a wicker frame which I was able to salvage from a skip. Unfortunately the elements had worn it away and it couldn't take the weight of the bottles, breaking in two after a few minutes of the bottles blowing in the breeze. I was lucky enough to find this plywood table discarded in an alley & it not only supports the weight of the bottles but also keeps itself stable and upright, unlike the wicker frame.

In the bottom right photo you can see the different water levels, a separate variable alongside strength of wind to negate the pitch (or frequency) as well as timbre. To give more sonic variability I also made sure to only reclaim different shapes and sizes of bottle.

Generative Sound Sculpture

Expanding on the recyclable / analogue theme I have decided to build myself a sound sculpture using old glass bottles, cuttings of rope and/or old shoelaces & a wooden frame reclaimed from the roadside.

This sculpture should be placed outside, with maximum sonic effect occurring during a storm. This generative instrument is primarily controlled by two variables; the wind blowing the bottles, negating the timbre of the strike (much like a wind chime), and the rain water that collects in the bottles determining the pitch, or frequency. Throughout the storm the bottles will fill up at different rates therefore generating a piece played entirely by the elements.

Sarah Sze: Triple Point

Since the 1990s, Sarah Sze has developed a sculptural aesthetic that transforms space through radical shifts in scale, colonizing peripheral spaces, engaging with the history of a building, and altering the viewer’s perception and experience of architecture through large scale, site-specific interventions.

Triple Point brings together many of the ideas that Sze has developed during her practice. Central to the exhibition is the notion of the “compass” and the desire to locate ourselves in a disorienting world. Each of the rooms of the United States Pavilion functions as an experimental site, in which objects attempt to become instruments or assemblages that seek to measure or model the universe. The aspiration to model complexity—and the impossibility of that undertaking—is a key theme in Triple Point.

In thermodynamics, “triple point” designates a singular combination of temperature and pressure at which all three phases of a substance (gas, liquid, and solid) can exist in perfect equilibrium. Triangulation—the measurement of distance from three ordinal points—is also used to specify a unique position in space. Sze’s work references both these ideas—the fragility of equilibrium and the constant ambition to create stability and location.

Sze approached the Pavilion as a site of live observation and experimentation; much of the exhibition evolved on-site over a three-month installation period. Elements from the urban landscape of Venice—photographs of stone, leaves from the Giardini, tickets from the vaporetto—were collected to serve the growth of these installations. Small fragments of the sculptures were dispersed throughout shops and roofs around via Garibaldi, to be discovered by chance within the fabric of daily life. The exhibition inhabits the building and city, navigating its rooms, coalescing into systems, and ultimately degenerating into remnants—in an effort to inscribe a very fragile personal order upon a disordered universe.

P3 PROJECT

For my practice 3 project I have felt inspired to create a generative instrument using only recycled materials. My field of musical exploration has always featured primarily digital & electronic components, so for this task I shall strive to step away from this and work only with the physical, focussing on organic & human-produced waste. I feel that this preservation of the natural ties in with the idea of making sounds using recycled & reclaimed objects. Upon first inspection it seems to me that there has been a distinct lack of research into the creation of generative instruments using recycled materials, however as my progress continues i’m sure that i’ll find other experiments conducted by my peers.

A recording of one of our first run throughs. Getting this piece together has been an incredibly fun experience - it’s so easy in electronic music to get used to creativity being a personal process and it was refreshing to be able to be creative with other people in a productive fashion. There is an unrivalled sense of community in a group of people sculpting sounds, which can only be matched by the thrill of playing in a band.

A piece recorded live using several components over a linked series of computers; a generative synthesiser created in pure data to emulate the environment of a train station, a microphone streaming live audio from a soundwalk, a selection of youtube videos from the film network being streamed in real time through pure data, and a hardware synthesiser run through Ableton Live.
