splatoon isn’t that gay, actually
PREFACE: Read this entire post in it’s entirety before commenting.
This post may come off as homophobic to some, but as a gay woman of color, i am tired of splatoon being simplified to “Gay Squidgame”. Yes, there are (2) gay characters, and there is nothing wrong with that, but please don’t attack others for having non-gay headcanons.

Splatoon is the only nintendo game with…
A Black protag, A (Nonstereotypical) Indian Protag, Okinawan Protag, and a Brazillian protag.
The plot of the story tackles even racism in a CHILDRENS GAME in a digestible format for young CHILDREN, which is really uncommon! especially for a japanese game
The most racially diverse nintendo game (OTHER THAN POKEMON) has a fandom dominated by white people who completely ignore the racial “wokeness” and instead focus in on the fact that two characters are gay—which means all seven idols must automatically be gay.
Judging by Shiver’s music style, it is clearly heavily influenced by Okinawan music, considering her voice actor is Okinawan. The song even contains a Sanshin riff, as well as Yubibue, an Okinawan music technique (AKA her whistles.)
Also, taking one listen to Big mans soundtrack should prove he’s brazillian…

Might i remind you that there is only one confirmed gay couple—Pearl and Marina. In both the English and Japanese dubs of the game, it is never outright stated that the two are gay, but it is heavily implied through the characters (Especially Marina’s) behavior.

i have no issue with gay people, (because i AM one) but seeing people get attacked for not headcanoning the idols (OTHER THAN PEARL AND MARINA) as gay is really sad.
none of the idols have confirmed sexualities, so until further notice, all of them are bi.
also, Acht is not confirmed to be transfem, so don’t attack others for not seeing them as so. Acht is likely nonbinary due to their pronouns, but they COULD be transfem. It is not confirmed. Even in the Japanese original dub, she is referred to using ‘Boku’, which is a masculine pronoun (Though for women, it is closer to They)
Shiver, Frye, and Bigman are not confirmed to be poly, and as far as we know, they are just friends (Though there is a good chance that Frye and Shiver COULD be gay, though raiders might reveal more about their relationship).
Also, they beat the carp out of Big Man, so it’s probably at least a bit toxic
There really is no romantic chemistry between the three of them, as well. With Marina and Pearl, It’s obvious (Even talking about Pearl getting jealous of Acht, or the two flirting throughout the entire game)
But that same vibe isn’t found between the three. It really just seems like a normal friendship.
nvm they might be gay… though i think shiver may be gay for fryes forehead rather than frye herself, considering they are making direct bedroom-eye contact with it.
Also, being poly isn’t really normalized in Japanese culture, and with splatoon being a Japanese game, it’s even more unlikely.
As far as we know, Shiver is not transmasc OR transfem. She is mot binding her breasts, she is wearing Sarashi, a traditional japanese form of bra. She could be interpreted as nonbinary, but her lack of lower lash could simply be cosmetic.
For the entire game, she is referred to as ‘She’ as well, though that may be a retcon.
