Russia with the Westmont College Choir
Tuesday May 13th, '14
Russia was quite the interesting experience. We started out in Moscow, a huge sprawling city that had constant and very congested vehicle traffic, which made traveling by tour bus more than a little bit frustrating. After our first breakfast, at the Hotel Cosmos, we went to the Moscow P. I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory in our tour shirts to “trade” concerts with the students there. We had lunch at a cafeteria about an hour away, near 3 PM, where I tried borscht for the first time. We had another mini concert downstairs with tradition-ally dressed Russians as a welcome and farewell, then went to the Red Square and the Kremlin! I hung out with Emilee & Mandy as we explored the square, posed with St. Basil’s Cathedral (pictured as well on our tour shirts), saw Lenin’s tomb & the changing of the guards, walked through an underground mall, and finally went back to the buses to perform once more, in a very dry (sound-wise) hall. We had dinner at the hotel's inner restaurant, called Kalinka, and went to bed around 12:30am.
Wednesday 5/14/14
The next day, we had another concert trade with a different group – and I finally sang a Lost In The Night solo! The choir sang Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine for us, and it was a stunning experience. We had an inexpensive lunch afterward, and got a tour of the Kremlin museum (the gift shop where I got my Faberge egg & decorated bag). I loved the Armory tour! My favorite parts were the life-size actual carriages, the sparkly everything jewelry, and learning a bit about Russia's history. After dinner, we went on a night tour of Moscow: the original Swan Lake (!!!), a biker meet-up, a full moon, and Red Square at night. We ended at the train station for an overnight train to Saint Petersburg. I'm very thankful none of my items were stolen, because theft was rampant on the train that night.
Thursday, 5/15/14
Saint Petersburg was my favorite! We arrived via overnight train, had breakfast, took a bus/stopping tour of the area, visited a souvenir shop with free vodka samples, visited the pastel-palette Catholic Church of St. Catherine to scope it out for our final concert, and checked in at the Azimut Hotel. After some downtime, a large group of us went to the famous Mariinsky Theatre to see the 3½-hour-long opera "Don Giovanni". We hit the Sky Bar in our hotel after for another relaxing night. I stayed until around 1am, reveling in the fun of a bar with friends & a beautiful sunset after midnight. They don't call it a "White Night" for nothing.
Friday 5/16/14
On this day, we had a guided tour through the Hermitage Museum, also known as the Winter Palace. I got to see the Church on Spilt Blood up close as well! After dinner, we had our final, bittersweet concert at the church in Nevsky Prospekt. I adventured afterward with Keith, Zara, and Cassie and her friends via bus and Metro to the Gulf of Finland! We had crepes afterward and barely made it back to the subway before it closed at midnight :o I spent my time in the Sky Bar on the hotel's 18th floor, enjoying the view of the sky, still lit by the sun at 1:00 am.
Saturday 5/17/14
The following day, we received a guided tour of Петергоф, spelled and pronounced Peterhof in English – I scored a decorated plastic bag for my scrapbook and various items from the gift shop in the so-nicknamed "Russian Versailles." We visited on the annual fountain activation day, so it was crowded and festive. We saw the interior house, the gardens, and the Gulf of Finland – which I got to touch J When we returned to the hotel, I napped until it came time for the choir’s banquet on the 18th floor. Aaron Bailey presented me with the Forte award and I enjoyed the buffet food at a table with Zara, Cassie, Emilee, Nolan, and Nichole. Emilee and I visited a souvenir shop across the street right before it closed, and then I spent free time in my room with other friends.
Sunday 5/18/14
Our final experience in Russia was a 3:15am bus ride to the Saint Petersburg Pulkovo Airport. We landed at the München Airport 2½ hours after taking off and had about five hours of free time. Emilee & I went outside to experience Germany one more time. Our final plane had restrooms on its lower level, & I got to relax in the window seat of a two-seat row. I found an in-flight channel featuring a soothing male voice speaking in both English and German and fell asleep to it. We landed in LAX at 3:30pm, PST, on I don't even know what day... haha.
That marks the end of my abroad travels for 2014. I hope you enjoyed reading my experiences, even though they were abridged. I know I enjoyed experiencing them!
Lithuania with the Westmont College Choir
Saturday May 10th, '14
We said goodbye today to Heidelberg, and to each other. Meinfernbus was late to its stop, but we arrived to the airport on time (thank goodness). I had no trouble finding my gate, but some trouble checking in my bags. My plane landed in Lithuania after a peaceful flight, and I took my first solo “taksi” to the Hotel Panorama. I walked around the vicinity, but stuck to my hotel area and enjoyed looking out the window. I had a McDonald’s dinner and sorted out what to put in my scrapbook.
My second day (5/11/14) in Lithuania was quite busy compared to the first – I finally reunited with the choir at the hotel, and we had many activities planned for the day. We had a three-course lunch before my only performance in Lithuania (the choir came from Klaipeda, with performances there as well), at a lovely but echo-y cathedral. After the concert, around 3 PM, we were led on a tour of the KBG and Genocide Victims museum, which thank-fully was not as somber as it sounds. For dinner, we ate at a secluded place in the countryside called Belmontes. After our three-course dinner in a rustic banquet hall, we were allowed to explore the bridges, gazebos, and luscious waters its backyard offered. After dinner, I found a group with which to tour the city of Vilnius: Cassie, Zara, Keith, Alissa + sister, Emilee, Nichole, & Mandy. We walked for 1½ hour in rain & sunshine, found the “Uzupis Constitution,” & other sights/shops.
Our final day (5/12/14) in Lithuania was enjoyable: I had breakfast with Trey & Martin, and then went in the same group (plus Zaiah) to explore again. We browsed roadside stands, took pictures and posed, had a ton of fun, ending up at forest Grill & Salad for lunch. I sat at a table with Will, Julia, Emilee, Nichole, Christine, Zara, Cassie, Scott, Connor, Nolan, and Peter. We then visited a castle called Trakai resting on an almost-island and received coffee on the house from our tour guide lady, in a coffee shop with a lovely view of the castle and water. One of the men sweetly treated me to a “foreign country date” – we sat at a two-seat table & chatted about our abroad experiences over the free coffee. After a quick solo trip around the castle’s exterior, we all headed to the airport to fly to Russia. There was slight airport drama, but we all survived & made it to Moscow safely! We took a bus to the city for 1½ hour at night, & arrived a Vegas-type hotel called the “Hotel Cosmos”. I walked with a group to Макдональдс & a grocery store, then back to the room for sleep. What an adventure :)
Week 14: Final week in Heidelberg
Monday (5/05/14)
Today started with cereal, then a conducting final review before our test. I got a pastry in the gap between classes and went to the classroom, where we had our last German lesson. After that, I got a döner at the newly opened Yufka's Kebap place, and ate it in the classroom before music history. We learned about aleatoric music and listened to a spooky example, before biking home all together. Hector's friend Ruben came by and stayed half the day, prompting a game night in which we all played cards and danced a little bit to the music we all played while cooking our dinners.
Tuesday (5/06/14)
We took our German final today around noon - it was a challenge. For lunch afterward, Sam, Michelle and I went to a beautiful restaurant with an ugly name, Hackteufel. I got a meaty potato soup and garlic spread/olives for baguette slices, which was sooo tasty. We went souvenir shopping afterward, during which I got a deck of cards with Germany on the picture side. We returned home, where I eventually made dinner and danced to Hector playing the violin before I realized I had to study and write a paper -.- Studying and writing took up the rest of the evening.
Wednesday (5/07/14)
I finished and printed out my paper, after Michelle proof-read it (thanks Michelle!), and headed out to Raja Rani for possibly the last time. :( I got my usual and shook the hand of the guy behind the counter because he was there most often when I was, and he was extremely sweet. I am going to miss him!! I returned to the classroom and studied a lot for music history. I wrote between four and six pages in under two hours! We returned home and I decompressed and had dinner, as well as took a trip to Cafe Frisch with a couple housemates for pastries! Then I went to my 8pm voice lesson with Rinnat, who was visiting from Berlin! We said our goodbyes afterward, and I returned home to write thank you cards for my teachers. I delivered them personally to Rinnat and Zach, then went to bed.
Thursday (5/08/14)
I started off the day with another pastry from Cafe Frisch, then biked with housemates to the conducting classroom for our final. We got to use the room with the grand piano and a couch, so we were comfortable. I went third and felt alright about my conducting, then we all went to Raja Rani together for the final time now. Then Sam and I went to Yilliy for hot chocolate and a chat. We went souvenir shopping and crossed the Alte Brücke for the final time before heading back home to clean and begin packing. When everyone came home, we watched Signs. Then we had friends over for a little party, with games, flammkuchen, and superfrozen Coke! That was neat. Our game of Spoons got intense, and then Hector did pretty accurate imitations of everyone :P Then Judith gave us all farewell chocolate/cards, which was sooo sweet, and then we all retired for bed.
Friday (5/09/14)
I went to a bakery with a couple housemates for breakfast, then for lunch we all went as a group to Mühle zum Löwen, a restaurant down the street. Upon returning to the house, Jonathan watched Arrested Development and I joined in. Around 5pm, Tim picked all of us up for a dinner up by the castle, at a hunting lodge called the "S" Kastanie. We had a delicious three-course meal of soup and bread, pork and beef, then chocolate-drizzled pears with ice cream for dessert. Then we all headed to the Schloss (castle) to take pictures and look at tadpoles. We were driven back home and said goodbye to Tim. I took a final grocery store run with Sam, Michelle, and Jonathan. I finished packing while at home, and Kurt came by to say goodbyes and chat with us, before we all headed off to bed.
Weekend Review: 13th week passed
Saturday (5/03/14)
I started off with a full night's sleep and got physically ready for our concert, then mentally ready when I went to practice with my voice teacher before finally heading over to the venue. I was on the program first and sang Piangero la sorte mia and Ach, ich fühl's, then recorded Michelle and Sam after me. At intermission, we went downstairs for a delicious reception spread put out by Andrea and mingled with the audience. We went back and listened to Sara, Jonathan, and finally Hector perform their pieces before the concert ended and we all went up for applause/roses/pictures. It was a fun time. The concert dispersed around and we headed to the Mensa (Heidelberg Universität cafeteria) around 10pm for social interaction with a good-sized group of peers (11 people total). We went back home around 11:30 for bedtime.
Sunday (5/04/14)
Today started out with a bike ride to church, and after the service, we stayed for a potluck downstairs! It was pleasant, with pasta, desserts, and friends for a good 45 minutes. We returned to the house after that because it was time for a party! Sort of. We were "booked" to sing some hymns for our landlady's son's first Communion party! We sang Amazing Grace, Beautiful Things, How Great Thou Art, and It is Well (we made the audience cry, aww). They shared the party with us afterward and we quite enjoyed it. Because this Sunday afternoon was so sunny, someone suggested we take a bike trip up the mountain to Thingstätte, an arena above Philosopher's Way. I don't regret going, but I never want to go again! It was horribly steep and we worked our way up, with bikes, for at least 45 minutes if not more. But the view was great, and I got to sing a little bit on the stage :P
We found monastic ruins further up a hill, and played hide and seek in them for a while! Then took a break for hot chocolate at a local cafe before heading to a gazebo lookout of the entire Old Town of Heidelberg. On the way down, riding a bike, I seriously feared for my life because it was so fast... I'm so glad I made it home safe! I made dinner at like 9pm, then we all gathered in the living room to watch The Terminal before bed.
Week 13! (I had to go back and count)
Monday (4/28/14)
Today was "the usual": went to class and got back tests, had Raja Rani for lunch, different class, got out early, walked along the Neckar with Michelle, went to Penny in drizzly weather for snacks, cooked dinner, and finally, listened to housemates play around on the piano keyboard before heading to bed.
Tuesday (4/29/14)
I had an early piano lesson today, but didn't play a single note - instead my teacher gave me an inspirational talk and we looked at my options for future careers (not piano-related, let's get that clear haha). I stayed afterward to write my homework summary and listen to Jonathan's lesson in the background, then walked with Michelle and Jonathan to our German classroom. We learned past tenses, then Michelle, Sam and I tried La Boheme again for lunch. I think I should have tried something other than a panini, because those made me feel ill... the afternoon brought about a house-cleaning spree, and after dinner we settled down to watch Edward Scissorhands in the living room. I went to choir at 8pm as usual and sat between Kurt and Aude-Line, which was nice :) We were invited to Vater Rhine afterward for drinks and food, so I decided to tag along - I tried a cherry/banana-flavored (nonalcoholic) drink, which was quite good. I came home around midnight and headed to bed after.
Wednesday (4/30/14)
I certainly had fun today! It started off with a trip to the practice rooms, then the usual classes - German and Music History, in the latter of which Hector and Sam played the other's instrument just to try - and Raja Rani for lunch. Back home after class and seeing two swans by the river, showing Dr. Willam our house, and finally going to a golf club for dinner and mingling! We met Dr. Willam's fellow jazz band members and had Käsespätzle with carmelized onions (a little like mac n cheese, but fancier). We witnessed heavy rain, lightning, thunder, and even hail, from the comfort of the building :) We returned to the house, having made new friends and listened to German radio, around 10:30 and decided on a scary movie night! We watched Cabin in the Woods, which needed an America's Funniest Home Videos follow-up, then I fell asleep around 2:30.
Thursday (5/01/14)
Today was our local trip to the Schwetzingen Palace and Gardens! Michelle made us all pancakes for breakfast too, what a way to start the day. We left at 10am with Andrea, and met up with Tim and their kids at the gate entrance. Then we walked through the expansive gardens in the fluctuating rain, and took pictures/took in the scenery until 1:15. We all had a group lunch at the Walzwerk Cafe on the same block as the palace, and went home around 3pm. I watched the lightning storm until 5:00, then took a short nap... maybe not so short actually, because I made my dinner at 8:00!!! The sky/outside area being light at 9pm threw me off. After dinner, Sara, Sam and I watched Pride and Prejudice, and I also did laundry. Sleep at 2am! (I am quite the night owl)
Friday (5/02/14)
We started the day off with a trip to the Völkekundemuseum, in which our final concert would be, to rehearse there. Once finished, us ladies went to the Hard Rock Cafe for lunch and got pizza on special. Around 2:30, we went back onto Hauptstraße to shop for various needs. I found the perfect card to give Mom for her birthday! I went back home for just a bit before going to my voice lesson, which was kind of a disaster; I had some breathing difficulties. We rescheduled, and I came back to make dinner. Jonathan gave me one of his crepes (probably to get me out of my bad mood), and I made flashcards in order to study for the upcoming finals. We all went to Penny multiple times for different things, then I settled down for sleep around 11pm.
Weekend after Austria
Saturday (4/26/14)
I walked around Handschuhsheim this afternoon, the small part of the city where our house is located. It is quite a quaint township :) In the evening, I made a special stir-fry and watched While You Were Sleeping with the housemates in the living room before falling asleep on the couch for a good part of the night.
Sunday (4/27/14)
I went to Calvary Chapel Heidelberg this morning, along with four of the five housemates! After that, Sam, Michelle, Hector and I decided to go out for lunch. We found an American-style diner called "Mandy's," which was pretty small but had good root beer floats. In the evening, we rehearsed at the Heidelberg Theater for our final concert, and Sara and I went out afterward with Rinnat and Zach, our voice teachers. It was a nice time :)
Week after Austria
Tuesday (4/22/14)
Today was a day for sudoku, sleep, and shopping for/making food. In the evening I went to choir for some new music and post-rehearsal socializing with new friends, before heading back home. I fell asleep at 2:30 this day and spent my final 10€ of the week on groceries.
Wednesday (4/23/14)
I got my passport back today, with my Russia visa inside! Hooray! In German we worked on Kapitel 6, and I went to Raja Rani afterward, where I have become a "usual" :) The man behind the counter is so nice! I regret not knowing his name. In music history, we continued our study of 12-tone music; after class some of us walked down Hauptstraße to buy gelato as a treat. Back at the house, we chilled all afternoon in the living room, then the greenhouse-like entryway. I stayed there until dark, made dinner and ate it there, and observed the storm clouds passing by.
Thursday (4/24/14)
In conducting today, we studied cut time - which is challenging, let me just say. I took my time getting to the main classroom and bought a Nußbrioche pastry from a local Backerei to appease my nerves before our German test. Afterward, I tried Pasta 2Go for the first time, and found it pretty good. I rushed to my piano lesson and played Clair de Lune for the majority of it. After that came a voice lesson at the Theater, during which I think I gained some ground. Back to the house to cook dinner, play some sudoku, and have a mini pillow fight in the living room. After that, myself, Sam, and Michelle decided to head to O'Reilly's for a "Ladies' Night Out." We walked there but took a tram back home, and I fell asleep on the couch before heading back to my own bed at 2am.
Friday (4/25/14)
Today had a slow morning - I made brunch, went grocery shopping at Penny, then watched Star Trek Into Darkness (because I can't make good use of my time in a foreign country, obviously) while everyone was out practicing. When my housemates returned, we all headed to the girls' room/top floor to enjoy the thunder and lightning storm as it happened. Made dinner after, and had a discussion of sorts with Michelle about pentecostalism. Soon enough it came time for bed.
Austria: Salzburg and Wien (Vienna)
Thursday (4/17/14)
All six of us plus Tim, our director, headed out from the Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof around 9am. We arrived in Salzburg around 2pm after a lovely train-window view of the Austrian Alps - I kept myself entertained on the long trip with writing and sudoku puzzles along the way. We checked in at the Youth Hostel (YoHo) and took a self-guided tour of the Salzburg Cathedral, also called Domplatz, and the nearby cemetery as seen in Sound of Music. In the evening, we went to a concert consisting of music by Mozart and Strauss and sat in the very last row of the balcony, waaaay up at the top. Around 8pm, we were out and went to a restaurant called Wilder Mann for dinner. I had stuffed Schnitzel, and we retired afterward to our rooms about 9:15.
Friday (4/18/14) (Good Friday)
After breakfast at the hostel, our group took a tour through the Mozart Museum that lasted about an hour and a half. For lunch, I went with a couple others to a restaurant up on a mountain - we walked all the way up, past the Nonnberg Abbey. I had white asparagus soup and enjoyed the bird's-eye view. We finished and headed to Mirabellplatz for a guided Sound of Music Bike Tour, with guide Claudio. We biked around for about 3 hours both in the city and the countryside; we got to see the housefronts for the Von Trapp family, among other things. Once the tour ended, we went to Cafe Tomaselli for a hot drink and shelter from the misty weather. For dinner, I split a piece of cake with Sara and we headed back to the hostel for a showing of The Passion of the Christ before bed.
Saturday (4/19/14)
Today we moved from Salzburg to Vienna, via morning train. After checking in at our hostel in the city, we all walked a short way to Wok'in, a small Asian restaurant that had great service and great food to match! I got a doggie bag so save money for dinner, and we traveled next to the Zentralfriedhof cemetery, where such musical greats such as Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Strauss, Glück, and others have grave sites. We pet a pair of horses attached to a carriage before being told we weren't supposed to, and headed to the Vienna State Opera to purchase standing room-only tickets for the showing of Ariadne auf Naxos, by Richard Strauss. It was confusing but entertaining (and thankfully there were subtitles in English), and lasted about two and a half hours. We took the subway back, arguably the cleanest I've been on, and I had a late dinner before sleep.
Sunday (4/20/14) (Easter)
My first holiday away from home started with a breakfast at the hostel, and continued to a morning Catholic mass at the Wien Hofmusikkapelle. It lasted an hour and a half, ending with a rather slow rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus... afterward, almost everyone went to another Mozart Museum, with a fancy bag-check at the front and three floors to peruse. We all met up as a group again and decided on WienerWald for lunch near the center of the city; I had an authentic "Wiener Schnitzel" meal, yum :) Afterward, we decided to check out Demel Cafe, which is famous for its high-quality cakes. I got a slice with caramel on top, and we had a wonderful social time before heading out to explore the city some more. We walked through a park area with statues, then found Karlskirche, a church that looked very much like the Taj Mahal. Soon enough it came time for another concert, this time at the Wien Musikverein concert hall, home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. We got standing-room tickets, but standing for 2.5 hours sounded exhausting so we retreated to the back at the second half to listen without looking. After the show, I got pizza from a pizza/döner stand and went back to the hostel with the group for sleep.
Monday (4/21/14)
Today was basically a travel day - from the Westbahnhof in Vienna to a 4.25 hour trip on an ICE train, lots of switching stations, discussions about theme park rides, slight stress, and finally back "home" in time to make dinner. What a fun weekend!
Week 'I don't even know anymore'
Monday (4/14/14): I had a piano lesson today at the music school at 8:45, for which I practiced right before. And after. Then I made my way to the classroom with a vanilla latte in my hands, from Starbucks (I should have checked out a different coffee shop, but oh well. Old habits die hard). After class, Michelle and I went to - you guessed it - Raja Rani! I also bought a mug for mom which says "From Heidelberg with love" on decorated heart cookies. After music history, we all returned home and chilled. I wrote a postcard home, then did a little grocery shopping. I made dinner, and hung out with Kurt when he came to tutor for German.
Tuesday (4/15/14): I only got four hours of sleep before the differently-scheduled conducting lesson, but I still woke up on time. I'm also thankful I didn't get hit by any cars when my bike collapsed in the middle of the street as I was jay-walking across it... what an inconvenient time for that to happen! A kind passer-by helped me out though, it was sweet. I conducted the first two movements of the Holberg Suite, and after class practiced piano on the grand in room 4. Jonathan came by and slept on the couch (it's such a cool room, I miss it), and we all walked to class together, once everyone was done practicing. I got a cappuccino croissant at Göbes today, and biked ahead of everyone to the then-locked classroom. Class was fun, we started a chapter that involved what to say at restaurants (which by now we've learned through example/trial and error, haha).
At home, I found some men working on replacing the doors in front, but also a big Easter care package from Mom! It was so sweet, I cried. This evening I traveled to Mannheim (the Nationaltheater) for a voice lesson with Chris. I feel he finally accurately described to me how the air should flow. And I connected my voice to my chest to make it less breathy. Overall, lots of progress! On the way back home, a man was nonstop-talking on the train about (I think) Jesus, Russia, and the end times. I say "I think" because it was all in German. I'm surprised I picked up so much though, haha.
Choir tonight was fun, because I found out Kurt is joining our group! He's a friend from the other abroad group, and our go-to German tutor. I had a great time. After the rehearsal, we had a small party for Hendrik's birthday; then I stepped outside and saw a beautiful scene with the moon coming up behind the hill, lighting up the Schloss and the Alte Brücke. It was great.
Wednesday (4/16/14): I stressed out about my second paper for Music History this morning, but it printed (sort of defectively, but I had at least a little time to fix it). We made it to German on time, and continued learning about restaurant stuff. During our lunch break, I threw together a presentation as well and presented last. I believe it went well. but I may never know... and I got a Döner with Jonathan beforehand, for lunch. After class, we saw a pair of ducks and their ducklings down by the river's edge! Once home, I made dinner and watched Fright Night in the living room of our house (it was great). Later in the evening, I watched half of the Sound of Music with the housemates before going to sleep. Austria tomorrow!
Concert Weekend!
Saturday 4/12: The big day, first concert! It was in Ladenburg, a couple towns away from Heidelberg. I had planned to take the train, but my choirmates were taking their bikes so I decided to follow. We had a 2pm call time and made it about 40 minutes late- going through numerous fields and getting a thick thorn in one's thumb after crashing into a bush can really put a damper on call times. I was kind of miserable, to be honest. We had a rehearsal in Sankt Gallus Kirche from 3-5pm, then got some blessed dinner time. We ate at Da Vinci, a venue with patio chairs/tables. Many choir friends joined us, it was a lovely time :) We bought some Belgian chocolate at Kristalfluss before heading back to line up. The concert lasted from 7 to 9pm, and at the end we received a standing ovation! The Bach b minor Mass is quite a fun piece, if not also tiring. We biked back home as well, which went better than before. I was so relieved to be home that I accidentally collapsed and my bike fell on me while I was trying to put it away! That made my ankle bleed, but I didn't care. I fell asleep around 3am, too much excitement for one day!
Sunday 4/13: I joined Sam, Michelle, and Jonathan at Calvary Chapel Heidelberg this morning, for a sermon on 1 Samuel 28. When I got home, I took the empty house as an invitation to practice piano and voice, and cook dinner early! I went to get my bike at 3, and found out the chain had fallen off the bike after my fall last night; I got it back on after just a quick prayer and lots of grease on my hands :P
Sara and I biked to Peterskirche, considerably closer to our house today than yesterday (in Heidelberg, just across the Neckar). We practiced again, had a dinner break, took a picture of the group, and began the concert at 6:00 (I'm the one leftmost in the kneeling row).
We had friends in the audience (Sam, and Tom) tonight, which was a wonderful feeling :) After the concert, we all regrouped at Da Mario, by Bismarckplatz, and had food. I ordered tiramisu, because I didn't want a meal. On the way home, we bumped into a fellow choir member on the train and had very nice conversation. I felt content with the night.
The week that happened after Paris (I stopped counting)
Monday (4/07/14): My final food item in Paris was, of course, a breakfast croissant at the train station. We trained back to Mannheim and took the Straßenbahn (Nummer 23) to the Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof. I had a springy outfit on today, because the weather was finally warming up enough for shorter skirts. We learned names for clothes in German, then for lunch I bought Raja Rani - I do love fast Indian food - and met my classmates at the fountain in the middle of the Marktplatz square, where we ate at its steps. The sunshine was lovely to bask in :) We had music history for the first time in a week and a half, and I went home to unpack, before napping kinda late.
Tuesday (4/08/14): I had a relaxing morning and went to class around noon, then had lunch with Sam and Michelle at Cafe ExtraBlatt, on upper Hauptstraße. I got my first authentic Schnitzel there, and it was delicious :) In the afternoon, I had a Skype-run chapel band audition (for Westmont 2014-15) with Joel, and I was really happy with how it turned out. (Spoiler alert: I was later chosen for alternate!) After dinner, I made Nuss-Nougat Creme (like Nutella, but thicker) brownies! We watched half of Hunchback of Notre Dame before the choir kids (me, Sara, and Michelle) had to leave for choir. We ran, I believe, the entirety of the Bach Messe in h Moll (Mass in b minor), then once back home I ate more of my brownies :P
Wednesday (4/09/14): I had the usual routine for the morning- shower, breakfast, German class, then out to lunch somewhere. I got a pastry at Cafe Gundel, then we chose Yilliy for the hot chocolate; I tried a spinach/cheese calzone thing which really tasted funky. In music history, we got our midterm results... and I got 100%?! I totally freaked out, in a good way of course, and internally because no one likes a braggart. After class came my voice lesson with Zach, which was quite helpful in getting my singing more into my body for support. I came home, had an easy dinner, and went grocery shopping at Penny - which cut me down to 10 Euro for the rest of the week. Oh well!
We had tickets to another concert tonight at the Stadthalle; we had upstairs seats, right next to a cellist who played with the others onstage for the first piece, by Arvo Pärt. Then we enjoyed Mahler's Lied von der Erde. I walked home and surprisingly got there before the others who waited for the bus (but I think that was the night everyone else went to a cafe, or something). I went to bed just after midnight.
Thursday (4/10/14): In conducting this morning, we learned about the parts and technical names for a violin. We also worked on conducting the Holberg Suite. I walked with Sam and Michelle to Göbes bakery, where I got a Himbeer-Tasche (Raspberry bag/purse, literally translated), then we walked down Hauptstraße to class. Dative case was drilled into our heads, but I still don't understand the concept in English so I doubt I'd be able to remember it in the future... :/ I went home on an obnoxious train filled with rambunctious kids, then made lunch. I went back on the town one more time today before coming home finally to do laundry and plan for my upcoming visa appointment.
Friday (4/11/14): First stop I made today was the Reisebank in the Hauptbahnhof to pick up the Euros my dear mother wired to me in order to pay for my Russian visa. It took a while, but I would hope so since it's picking up money we're dealing with! While I was in the area, I bought my round-trip ticket to Frankfurt, which cost me almost 20 Euros... That sucked. I then went to the Musikschule to sit in on Jonathan's piano lesson, then have mine. I got a quick lunch at McDonald's before going to my platform for the S-Bahn, which would take me into Frankfurt.
I arrived literally ten minutes before the appointment. I am so happy/lucky the building I needed was a five-minute walk from the station; talk about convenience! I remembered everything I needed to bring, and made nice small talk with the lady behind the glass. She spoke Russian, German, and English, which I was happy for. [Side note: I have so much respect for people who have the patience/ability to become fluent in more than one language. It's so amazing.] I got everything turned in, paid, and had a half hour before my return train came. I took that opportunity to explore the area around me as best I could; it was so beautiful! Like LA, if LA was cleaner. My train back got me home in about an hour and a half; I entertained myself with music and sudoku. Jonathan shared a crêpe, which I was thankful for. I wish I could have relaxed at home, but we had another choir rehearsal to go to :/ Three hours tonight, 7:30-10:30pm.
PARIS
Friday (April 4th): I woke up at 4:30 to get ready for the day! We had a bit of a long trip ahead of us. We left around 5:30 on the 24 tram for the Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof, and caught an earlier-than-planned train to Mannheim so we'd have more transfer time. We caught a 7am train via the ICE (Inter-City Express) train to Paris. Pulled in to Gare de l'Est and walked to our hotel (Hotel Terrage, kind of a dive) close by, checked into our rooms and immediately hit the town!
First stop was the Louvre, which cost 12 euros to get in; we could not get through enough of it in time, so we just saw most of the basics: La Joconde (Mona Lisa), Venus de Milo (Aphrodite), and so on. We spent at least 2.5 hours there and only got through half of a wing, maybe one or two floors? That place is HUGE. Anyway, here's me and Lisa just chilling.
After that, we had a late lunch in the Café Musée, which was a very yummy hot baguette-sandwich thing. Then looked at a nearby church, and the group got separated. Somehow though, we met up again at a random flower/post card shop! We all headed then to the Notre Dame Cathedral. It was very stunning! We stayed there for a while, after *someone* kept wandering away... not name-dropping though :P I cried inside the church, it was so beautiful. After that visit, we got macarons (which are not as good as I expected, kind of disappointing) and found our way to the "best ice cream in the world, or Paris, or something like that." Berthillon had expensive scoops, but I got a mind-blowing vanilla. So tasty. The rest of the day was a bit of an unwinder, where we walked back to the hotel and had food. I had deep discussions with Michelle, then it was time for bed.
Saturday, aka the most surreal day of my life: DISNEYLAND PARIS!!!! (Yes, it had to be done, otherwise I would have regretted it.)
I woke up around 7:20am and I got ready: black shirt, red pants, yellow earrings (couldn't find yellow shoes in time), little hidden mickey in eyeliner on my eyelid - I basically did a lazy Mickey Disneybound :) Sam, Sara, Hector, and I left around 8:30am from the lobby, and somehow navigated the Metro/RER trains to get to 'Parcs Disneyland' - after about 1.25 hours of travel, we were literally dropped off in Disney Village! There was a little scare about our debit cards not working (to buy tickets), but a quick Starbucks trip quelled those fears :) We waited in the lines for tickets for about an hour, then at 11:15, we went into the park!!!!! Like I said, surreal. The castle was one of the highlights of the day; it grew on my the more I looked at it. It was sooo tall (especially compared to Anaheim's castle)!
This is my 'I can't believe this is happening' face.
Our first ride was Space Mountain, which had us in shock once we got off. It was so different than the one in California, but a nice change. Upon exiting, we stumbled across a Mary Poppins Spring-themed parade. The dancers came pouring out from Main Street as well as the castle, and I got so happily overwhelmed I cried (this weekend sounds like a crying weekend overall! Haha). So I had my moment, then once the show ended we headed off to Big Thunder! We got fastpasses, then passed the time with Pirates! That ride was basically the reverse of the original, but it had bigger drops and seemed to go faster. Then back to Big Thunder, which still took a while with the fastpass line so long, but it was worth it! It was a very, very large ride. The final dip underground at the end was quite exhilarating.
We then took a trek to Walt Disney Studios, which is in bad need of repair/remodel, to be honest. It felt depressing, we didn't stay for long. There we rode Tower of Terror (which was identical to the one in DCA), RC Racer in Toy Story Land, the Rockin' Rollercoaster, the tour starring Disney's live-action flops that no one watched/remembered, and Aladdin's carpets. Overall, underwhelming. We went right back to the main park as soon as we could.
The first thing we saw back in Disneyland Paris was yet another parade! I observed that the park was extremely spacious, very much unlike Anaheim's crowded and cramped summer days. It could also have been that fewer people visit the Paris location (someone shared with me that French people enjoy more passive entertainment, like going to a museum, rather than interactive entertainment like going on rides. I believe it). We ate dinner in the Lion King-themed Hakuna Matata restaurant and sang along to the instrumental tracks it played while we ate. The railroad station we found had just said goodbye to its train for about 45 minutes, but we stayed for at least fifteen minutes to chill and enjoy the calm and serenity one rarely finds at Disneyland. We explored the second level of Aurora's castle, then Fantasyland too! The teacups went quite fast, Sam and I discovered.
Then we returned to Frontierland and discovered the Phantom Manor, which is like Haunted Mansion but with a(n American) Western theme. I LOVED it, and the little graveyard next to it was cute to explore too. We got to watch the sunset from the top of the hill where the Manor was situated. After that, we reserved seats for the fireworks show! But of course, it got cancelled :( So, we went souvenir shopping (and by "we" I mean everyone else but me, I was trying to find a place to sit where I wouldn't get separated from the group. It was semi-stressful) for the final couple hours before midnight, before taking the RER train back to our hostel.
Sunday: Today, we rode the Metro to visit the Eiffel Tower! Some Chinese tourists were there the same time we were, to take "far away" pictures with the tower, and one man in the tour group wanted a picture with me in front of the tower! We took it, and he said 谢谢 ("Xie Xie," which is thank you in Mandarin), then "thanks" (with an "s" sound instead of the "th") and I thought it was really neat. He was very nice. Our group bought €13,50 tickets to ride up to the very top of the tower, and waited in a rather long line. I was on my feet for too long during the day; it was just as unpleasant as one would imagine. After we finished our tour of the "tour" (tower in French, haaa), we ate at a café, the name of which I can't recall. I got spaghetti carbonara, which would have been fantastic if it wasn't mixed with a raw egg in front of me. I do not like eggs, especially raw, and especially if they are in my food. I ate most of it anyway because nutrition was more important than being squicked out by it, and when we left the place we witnessed at least three hundred roller skaters go by in the street; was it some sort of derby? We may never know. Then, we traveled by foot to the French Opera House! Tragically, it wasn't open for tours on Sunday :'( We tried to sneak a peek, but it wasn't meant to be. To get back to the hotel, I walked with Michelle and Jonathan while Sara, Hector and Sam took the Metro. We saw some interesting sights! I wish I'd video-taped more things, but I guess the memories will have to do.
After a couple hours of rest at the hotel, we headed back out on the town at 9:30 or so, in order to see the Tower at night. After dark, every hour on the hour, it sparkled!!! What a surprise. We walked around to find a café and settled on Le Wilson. I had a French original: Crème brûlée! It was the best thing I'd ever tasted in a looong time, it was wonderful. We all went back to the hotel happy, seeing all that we could see of Paris at the time :)
Monday was our return day, which meant we woke up quite early for the 6:50 train from Gare de l'Est. I said it once, and I'll say it again: thank goodness for the close proximity between hotel and train station!
Ich habe Heidelberg verlassen.... :/ und jetzt, ein flug zu Wilna (Lithuania). What a day!
