“Again and again the best works show that the stuff of the world is more interesting than any idea we might have about it. Photography is the great gathering device of fact, but it does so by relentlessly creating a fiction of those facts. The conceptual artist deals in ideas, but how dull they are when compared to this magical transformation of hard reality into synthetic picture. Perhaps all the photographer needs to do is go out in the world and work, making picture after picture, letting this magic take place. Stick the ego in a back compartment and let the wonders of the world be transformed by lens and sensor, and only later on make an effort to understand what has been made.”
