you’re free to dislike any character you wish, but there’s something so odd/almost parasocial idk about viewing a character entirely based on how you’d feel about them if they were real. that’s not how character analysis works!!!! they don’t exist to be your friend, they exist to serve a narrative purpose and it’s honestly insane to see how many grown people dismiss a character’s arc/importance to the narrative as a whole because they felt like the character "would bully them irl”... okay

Thought a lot about the name James yesterday and it reminded me of how Will goes by both the English & Welsh version of his name but there never any mention of the 2nd gen doing that in TLH. and my theory is she didn’t even attempt it because she immediately killed it with James… no literature nerd alive is allowing their son to be called Iago I fear

AHAHAHAH for the “boyfriend moments” comment: i think it was just a way to mean the typical boyfriend/couple-like stuff! Likely that person wanted to ask if there were gonna be scenes that are kinda domestic and romance. Which we’d all love, but I think Kit and Ty have higher fantasy stakes than that in their world and their love too👀🌈

I think you are right about fantasy stakes. When I think of romance, at least in a Shadowhunter context, I think high stakes, high emotions, massive consequences and, usually, the absence of the luxury of time. Also, usually Magnus walks in on you at some point or another.

I do think of TWP as very romantic books. Part of focusing in so closely on the main four characters is to give those romances space and time. It allows for Kit and Ty to be on a desperate chase across Europe but occasionally have time for squabbling over whether licorice is disgusting (yes, yes it is) or you, know being terrified about the other person's safety (which I find romantic, though not domestic.)

If the question is just whether Kit and Ty ever do anything romantic, I do not know what terrible person would promise a romance between two characters and then never let them do anything romantic. Kit and Ty must reconnect after a bad split, but that in itself is a romantic process. Also, they are quite a bit older than they were in TDA so "I don't know, do I maybe want to kiss this person?" is more like "I desperately do want to kiss this person, but maybe they do not return the feeling."

But even then, desperate kissing is just part of a whole, and ideally only works if the two people can also just have a nice time together when things are slightly less desperate. Like trying to make pancakes together. Which might happen. I'm just saying.

cassie i’ve been wondering if in the near future will be getting an updated flower book and a us tmi collectors edition as well?

City of Bones had a tenth anniversary special edition, but they've stopped printing that because we're working on a twentieth anniversary special edition, which is kind of horrifying. That's my US publisher. The UK is doing beautiful special editions of all six books, they're not all out yet but they look like this, and LitJoy and Fairyloot have both done special editions of the TMI books but I don't know if they're still available or sold out. Juniper Books has this set. I actually don't always know what's even out there! But special editions are a thing that keeps rolling forward with new ones and updated ones and so forth. So you never know, I usually put that stuff in my newsletter though.

Flower book: I wouldn't want to do it again until all the books were finished. And I had time. And could include the family trees minus Esme Hardcastle's errors. :)

If you could go back and change something small from your old books what would you change and why?

For the twentieth anniversary edition of City of Bones, I did go back and change small details. Mostly nobody has flip phones or DVD players any more, and there are lines I changed that I don't think work now. But changing anything really major isn't possible as all those things have ripple effects down through all the books. Also I bet the things I'd probably change are not something anyone else is interested in!

My theory that the demon Jem met isn’t actually Belial but someone else is probably one of my more out there theories but I truly think I’m onto something there… like if I was to pick a theory I thought was the most likely to be true it would 100% be this one

a collection of thoughts supporting this:

“Belial” at the end of CHOT is very obviously written to be like his depiction in GOTSM. There’s quite a bit of repetition in language surrounding him, plus Jem identifies them as the same, to the point I imagine CC had GOTSM on hand as she wrote CHOT to ensure they matched

(sidenote: interesting that he’s described at being shaped from clay since that’s how Adam and Lilith were created, aka the origins of humanity & being of the earth — doesn’t really apply to fallen angels you would think)

Belial in TLBOTW (2020) however does NOT match Belial in GOTSM (2018) & CHOT (2023). While it’s a fairly brief appearance, Sammuel puts emphasis on Belial being like he always is

Here’s James’ description of meeting Belial the first time in CHOG for comparison (exhibit c);

Belial’s death and supposed replacement does not match with the lore established around Lilith and Sammael. Especially since Belial was killed by being stabbed thrice by Cortana, a man made sword which supposedly has a feather from Michael’s wing in the hilt. Comparatively, Sammael was killed after being hunted down by Michael himself & stabbed with Glorious and Lilith was destroyed by the Mark of Cain, which derives its power from God directly.

Only Jem and Sister Emilia have encountered him, and both times “Belial” uses Jem’s love from the Herondales. In CHOT it’s to pass along the message “he” is no longer interested in Tessa’s children & descendants and in GOTSM it’s to send Jem to find the lost Herondales (which given the circumstances of everything was definitely planned). Guess who are the main characters of TWP.

Jem’s hunt for the lost Herondales directly leading to the survival of the line + being told that Tessa’s descendants are ordinary mortals now leading to them forgetting their ancestry & lacking any concernment for what that might mean & how it should influence their actions. and now we have this new Ash snippet (exhibit d);

and an arc reader claims that it would be “illogical path” for Blackstairs to think about having kids in TLKOF specifically, which could just be because it’s super crazy busy but could also be because a direct descendant of a Prince of Hell having seven kids might have been a bad idea that should not be continued

New Belial claiming a bunch of titles & epithets that have never (as far I remember) been applied to Old Belial even vaguely. If anything they apply to Lucifer? Since he’s the oldest (according to Simon) & he refers to himself as a commander (vs other POH like Azazal, Asmodeus & Sammael being called lieutenant or generals)

The whole thing kinda reeks of another demon taking advantage of Belial being sent to the void for the foreseeable future to assume his identity & use his relationship to the Herondales for their own gains. Especially if it is a more powerful demon like Lucifer who could prevent Belial from ever returning to this realm.

The scene being separated into a coda — bringing extra attention to it — despite the fact nothing happens (on the surface)

also just this quote (exhibit f:)

combined with the fact Jem has never seemed to be suspicious of the fact Belial wanted him to find Roland & Aureline’s family… like he would be very easy to turn into a pawn unfortunately. Genuinely why does Kit know barely any Shadowhunters but every single living descendant of Belial (& one non living 😭) is very close to him…. Did it ever occur to anyone that might be a bad idea given the source of this information lmao

Hey Cassie, really wanted to know if we'll see Sebastian Morgensten in Ash. Like is his character going to be a redemption arc of Sebastian himself or Will Ash be someone completely different even with the Morgensten blood? And will he meet his aunt Clary? If they do it's gonna be a burst of mixed feelings.

I have always said Sebastian is not redeemable and I stick by that. Ash is affected by the fact that Sebastian was his father, of course, but he's very different, especially as he never had Valentine in his life, but he did have Janus and the Queen, who are extremely different kinds of influences. At the end of the day Ash isn't living out an arc for his father; Sebastian had an arc, it just ended badly! And yes, Ash meets Clary.

Hi Cassie, just want to say how incredibly important TSC has been for me and my life, and I will treasure them for as long as I possibly can. I know Better in Black has been out for a minute now, but Nene’s story about Sebastian and the Seelie Queen very much reminded me of the true story of Andrew and Arthur from TFSA-I was just curious if that story was supposed to kind of be Nene narrating as well, or if it’s more of a case of Faerie stories all have a similar vibe when they’re told?

I think there's a cadence to stories told about or by faeries that has different sound to it. They don't quite talk like mortals, and they don't think like them either. They draw more on the oral traditions of folklore — meaning stories passed down through speech, not writing — and therefore they have a voice which may sound to you like Nene, since it's how she thinks, too. Faeries tend to tell stories with a mix of "fairytale logic" where events unfold according to symbolic and moral patterns, and archetype, where characters embody universal roles (the Queen, the healer, the trickster, the abandoned child, the prince.)

Thank you! I like Max, he's a sorrowful academic which I have a soft spot for. He does show up in the Wicked Powers to be consulted about the prophecy and some mythology — he did turn that prophecy up, after all.
