people calling Julian the twins’ (and especially Ty’s) father is something I think I will have to just make my peace with because I don’t think anyone will stop any time soon, but it unfortunately bothers me deeply 😔

I think part of the disconnect comes from the fact that we very rarely (if ever) see things from the twins’ perspective. The only POVs either of them have are in LOS, and aren’t all that substantial from memory, so everything we learn about their relationship with Julian is filtered through other people. Very rarely do people step back & look at just the actions and dialogue of the twins to construct their relationship with Julian.

I’ve said before that Julian is unreliable when it comes to their relationship, because he can only see it from his perspective which has been obviously affected by his own trauma & disordered thoughts regarding his family born from that. But this also makes other characters like Emma and Mark unreliable because they are closer to Julian & see things from his perspective too. Just look at Lady Midnight, we never see anything about how the twins actually feel about what is occurring. Only what they say outright, framed in the interpretation of someone else, and it’s very clear this is just the tip of the iceberg. We never see what Ty & Livvy talk about while nobody else is there, and it’s obviously they have their own plans. That’s the whole reason Ty meets Kit — Ty & Livvy conspire for one of them to accompany Emma & Julian because they don’t trust Johnny Rook while the other causes a distraction.

Julian sees their desire & eagerness for Mark to stay being born purely from their love of Mark. He thinks they’ll be heartbroken and totally blindsided if he leaves, because they love their brother (which he thinks he himself can no longer be). And while they obviously do love Mark, Julian is ultimately wrong & Ty tells him as much to his face. The twins want Mark to stay for Julian’s sake more than anything else.

The twins are much more aware of what’s going on than anyone assumes, and they understand Julian far more than anyone gives them credit for too (even if they don’t know everything). They know Julian is struggling & has the world on his shoulders, that he needs help, but also he won’t accept that help from them. They know how Julian views them, as children he has to care for, and are doing their best to care for him and figure Mark can do what Julian won’t let them. When Ty tells Mark he can take over some of the responsibilities from Julian, Mark freaks out. He has come to understand Julian’s feelings over the course of the book & knows how much that will upset him, so when Ty says he’s also told Julian this (see above quote) it seems disastrous. He doesn’t consider that Ty also knows this, and specifically reassured Julian about how much they need him before suggesting it to him.

The fact they come home to Mark totally wrecking the kitchen also proves his point — Mark could take over some responsibilities so Julian can rest while still being needed. Julian never focuses on this, instead he immediately thinks about how devastated they’ll be if Mark leaves again. He never really comprehends that the twins will be devastated on his behalf.

This scene has very similar vibes to Livvy kissing Julian on the forehead in LOS (which is often depicted as a comforting parental gesture in tda). The twins & Julian’s relationship isn’t parental like it is so often said specifically because of how parental (protective, comforting) they feel towards him, he just won’t let them act on it. Julian tries so hard to be the parent he knows his siblings don’t have that he dismisses the fact he doesn’t have parents either, but the twins know and they try so hard to fill that role too… and it’s a criminally under discussed aspect of the series

Gonna step outside my usual programming a bit because that light pollution take and a lot of the responses to it aggravated me so much.

No, wanting to see the night sky isn't a twee retvrn to ghibli-ass take. It's not a matter of some anprim impulse to dismantle industrial society for ~nature aesthetics~, it's an extremely visible symptom of environmental degradation that gets downplayed because the externality seems trivial to most people: "Oh no, the night sky, what ever will we do without it."

But it actively disrupts light-sensitive circadian rhythms in plants and wildlife, which disrupts foraging patterns, reproductive and hibernation cycles, and contributes to wildlife population declines. It's not the major contributor to those declines, but it's an additional point of stress in an ecosystem already stressed by climate change and other forms of industrial pollution. And so much of it is wholly unnecessary.

I don't think people realize how far-reaching the problem is, either. That light isn't just confined to the places people use. You don't escape it by just taking the bus to the edge of town. That light carries, in some cases for hundreds of kilometers. Death Valley has some of the darkest skies in the US, and yet, the dome of light above Las Vegas is visible on the horizon over 250 km away! Anywhere within 50 km of a major urban center, just about anywhere in the world, never gets darker than a night under a full moon.

And this is very much a recent problem too. Before the switchover to LEDs, it was relatively expensive to light places. That meant actually accounting for the energy use and making sure it was being used where it was needed. That light was also warm-colored, so it didn't travel as far. With the decreased cost of lighting, it became standard to light places like daytime whenever they might be needed. Lighting didn't get safer, it just got more thoughtless.

The reason you see astronomy-types sounding the alarm most loudly is because they're the ones who have been seeing the full effects of light pollution and its encroachment on dark skies. It's a hobby for me too, but it's partly because I am a night owl who grew up in a small town with nothing else to do. I used to be able to clearly see the Milky Way horizon to horizon when I grew up in the mid-00s. The last time I visited about five years ago, I could only see it overhead. The population has fallen by like 10%, but the skies are brighter. I can tell when the college decided to leave the football stadium lights overnight. I can tell where the car dealerships that added overnight display lights are. I can even see when trucks with the fuckass LED light bars are coming over a hill from 5 km away.

I'm all for well-lit, safe, and accessible spaces for people to work and play at night. But there is an impact from lighting, and it can and should be regulated like any other point source pollution. It's a pretty straightforward and materialist assessment. But go off about the big scary anprims are coming for your society so people can see the stars I guess, that's not at all a reactionary response to hearing about a problem

blorbofication to me is when you love a character in such a laser focus way that you somewhat detach them from the narrative from which they are inserted and treat them in a way roughly similar to how you'd treat an oc for which you still have no story and just like to put them in situations just for fun. which there's nothing wrong with btw, it's just that it can easily lead to people forgetting the character engine in a narrative and not just a barbie doll

A very little. In the scenes in TLKOF from Ty's perspective, there is no room or reason for him to think about them. Dru wears her mother's gear and thinks briefly about her father, but he died when she was eight, and Eleanor when she was even younger. To her, her parental figure is Julian, who she thinks about a lot, as does Ty.

The forward progress of their stories ends with TLH. They do not live on forever or return as ghosts. We may hear bits and pieces about their lives, as history (Matthew's apartment in Paris lives on). It's not to say someday there might be a short story or something, who knows?! — but not in TWP.

He does! He remembers her well though he won't necessarily admit it at first. She certainly changed him, as he has only known otherwise terrible role models.

Zara is never over anything, but she also has beef with a lot of people. You'll definitely see her though she has bigger problems than Emma in TLKOF.
