PJEG Mythology AU Infodump Part 1
I do apologize if the wording or pacing of this post feels off- I wrote the grand majority of this while sleep deprived. Feel free to let me know if I need to clarify any details or expand on anything.

Genres for this AU: dark fantasy and western with steampunk aesthetics
The AU takes place on an Earth very similar to our own, save for the fact that it's composed mainly of one giant Pangea-like continent called Eden surrounded by several different archipelagoes.
The continent has various biomes (with desert and grasslands being the most common), and is split in half by a large mountain range nicknamed "The Spine" by locals.
There are many city states surrounded by massive walls, patrolled by both man and mechs.
Every city has their own patron deity who was woven into the creation myth of the settlement and was seen as the divine protector of the place and its people. Most of the main deities are patrons of a city state (many being the patron of more than one).
Countless smaller towns dot the oceans of 'wildlands' that separate these cities- often targets for the bandits and the occasional monster that roam the lands. Despite the hardships they endure, these people are stubborn and stand their ground.
They might not have the grand temple districts dedicated to the gods like their city counterparts, but each settlement has its own temple for worship.
Train tracks stitch together the countless communities, their rails stretching further and further out through the 'Inner Frontier', closer to the wastelands that occupy the center of the continent. Wastelands where most gods would not dare roam.
It wasn't always like this; back in the Golden Age before the Ruination, there were hundreds, if not thousands of gods that ranged from local gods to the major deities. They roamed the earth alongside humans.
It was a time of peace and prosperity, a time where humanity didn't know of hardship.
They didn't need to work to ensure their own survival. The Earth was always bounteous and fertile- so there was no desperate need for food. There were no external threats, so they didn't need to fight.
But with any Golden Age, it was eventually going to end.
Not much is known about the events lead up to the Ruination or the events that took place during it, but whatever the causes were, the carnage was absolute and was apocalyptic in nature.
After all was said and done, every ocean and river ran red with blood, humanity was nearly extinct, and the number of gods dropped all the way down to 20- the remaining declared a truce to rebuild.
Their names are as follows:
Damon, Wolfgang, Eva, Desmond, Eloise, Kai, Grace, Toshiko, Mark, Jett, Cassidy, Jean, Ingrid, Wenona, Diana, Ulysses, Tozu, Mara, Cara, and Damian.
Even though these 20 gods and goddesses are considered major deities today, they didn't start that way. Most of them were lesser regional deities, many not being associated with what they are now.
Some were even descended from the previous major deities they replaced, others were born during the Ruination and knew nothing of the era before.
