“I just don’t know what I’m supposed to be”. (Lost in Translation, 2003)Â
We were standing in line waiting for meds one night while I was in treatment and one of the men in my unit standing behind me grabbed my left arm and tugged so hard it forced me to spin around and stare him in the face as he examined years of self-hatred, self-inflicted. “That’s a bad scar, babe,” he says after about twenty seconds and my mind flashes back to five years earlier, sitting in my car in the parking lot of a supermarket with my best friend in the passenger seat, crying, holding my left arm the same way, “It shouldn’t still be bleeding like this after three days,” he says. “Please,” he says. “You can call me.” Nothing I’ve been writing has a beginning, middle, or end. There’s no clever way I can come up with myself to end that story. I’ve just been thinking about it a lot lately.
